Wow, I hope you're right about #1, because I was just coming to post about my realization that the white wall tile I've had installed isn't going to match the white Toto toilet that's going in or the white that the refinished bathtub is going to be, which will match American Standard white and now I'm worried that the whole place will look funny and off.

I really thought the wall tiles were a very white white until they were up. And they do look white white unless they're up against something truly white white, in which case they look off a bit. Slightly greyish maybe.

I've ordered a black and white shower curtain (actually Victorian curtains from Delia's of all places (teenage girls' clothes and accessories) which I intend to have made into a shower curtain). I'm waiting for it to arrive, but in the meantime I just went and held a black and white t-shirt with a similar scroll print up to the walls and, yup, I can really see the contrast. Now I'm wondering if the shower curtain is a mistake and I should avoid black and white white, going for color or more of a natural/unbleached/linen white. Or if I'm just being hysterical and nitpicky.

I don't know if this will put your mind at ease over the "matchy-matchy" stuff or simply add to your angst, but let me throw this master bathroom out as an example of how un-matchy things can be:

Fixtures: The sink, the toilet, and the tub (out of view) are from three different manufacturers and as a result they are three different shades of roughly the same color. If you did an optical scan and broke it down into an RGB analysis, you'd see the difference. If you put them next to each other, put a toothpick in your mouth, and scratched your head over it while drinking a diet soda, you'd notice the difference. But as a whole, they look fine. They're all "biscuit". Or "oyster". Or "unrisen bread dough". You pick the name, that's what color they are. They're different. But close enough. But they don't even have to be "close enough", because they are three different entities. But enough about that.

Hardware: The sink faucet is polished nickel. The make-up mirror on the pony wall is polished chrome. The cabinet knobs and door hinges are brushed pewter. The light sconces are oil-rubbed bronze. Within the shower, the shower fixtures are polished chrome. Nothing matches? The horror of it all!

Teak countertops paired with brazilian cherry flooring? Oops.

The thing is, things don't always have to match. Sure, a bidet and a toilet next to one another would look best were they the same exact color, they are a "pairing" in and of themselves. But a fixture over here doesn't have to match a fixture over there. Even a sink and a toilet next to one another don't have to match. They are separate entities, even if next to one another.

I definitely want you to feel comfortable with tile that's a different color than your toilet, sink, tub, etc. They are completely different.

Now if you had an uber-mod slicky one-piece euro toilet set in a traditional bathroom with subway tiled walls and penny flooring? Even if they were the same color, the styles don't match. So there are varying levels of "matching". Color, style, material, etc.

All my opinion, so what I wrote isn't gospel. I'm no designer, I just bang stuff together and hope for the best. lol

I'm about to have tile put in a new bathroom: off-white wall tiles and the toilet and sink are both white white.

Personally, I can't stand fixtures that aren't white. Just a personal issue, but I like them nice and white, no matter what else is going on in the room.

Obviously, I fall in the "don't worry about it" camp.

But mongo, what if you were drinking regular soda? Would that make a difference?

Regular soda drinkers are safe. Drinking regular soda shows you're not overly anxious about caloric intake, sugar ingestion, caffeine overload, tooth decay, etc. If you're not worried about that stuff, you're probably not worried about a bathroom having more than one shade of a certain color. lol
