Problem with hot__mail

My hot--mail acct. has been mailing out some spam messages to everyone on my contact list. It says I just bought a new D computer and how much I like it, etc., pretty benign so far. Now when I hit the new message button, the message is there. It could be triggering another mass mailing if sent. When I googled it, the email people says it's the computer, and the computer people say it's the email acct.

I changed passwords and info, but it's still there.

The address is still listed on this forum, probably for another day or two till I close it. Does anyone here know anything about it, know how to get rid of it, or how not to get it in the first place? Thanks for any info.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your Desktop.

Note: Vista users must use Run As Administrator
Â Under Main: Select Files to Delete choose: Select All.
Â Click the Empty Selected button.
Â If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Â Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords click No at the prompt.
Â If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Â Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords click No at the prompt.
Â Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Then do below:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Click here
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
Â The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Â Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Zep, Thanks for your help. DH did what you suggested. There was nothing found. I'll close the email acct and get a new one. We still don't know if this affects anything other than hot___mail.

Now you have me wondering. Perhaps next Feb-March I'll start to log the night time lows to compare with the dates I first see eyes appear. Not very scientific, but it might be fun to see. -Babka I think the weather bureau will give daily highs and lows, surely a little math would yield some insight. Once they go dormant they tend to stay dormant unless forced by some method and heat will do it. I think it would require more heat prior to the winter solstice though. Here we can get a lot of days that do not go above 40 and the plants do not go dormant. Then in the fall we get long periods above 50 and they don't break dormancy. Have to conclude that there is more than one signal or more likely different signals depending on where the plant is in the yearly cycle. During a warm fall they will hang on then one little frost or low night and boom they have gone dormant. Now lets look at my new growth on all the plants in pots with constant water reservoirs. They get signal to come up in the spring put up new growth from root storage. Photosynthesis from the new leaves and roots, now to blooming, new signal then comes the summer solstice and new signal to grow again. In many of our gardens it becomes hot and dry and we don't get this new growth consistently. Back to the pots, water and the cooling effect of evaporation from the constant water. I've just set up a plant that had been in the ground, looking pretty bad. It will be under mist during the heat of the day. There may have been enough signals to keep it from putting out new growth but I want to see if the cooling effect of mist will revive it. Yes, a very interesting plant..........

Same thing happened to me a while back. It's a computer hacker from China. He somehow got into my (previous) Hotmail account and started sending everyone on my email list, emails that sounded like they were from me! He made it sound like I was suggesting they try out his wonderful site in China to buy things. Hotmail and MSN were extremely worthless in helping me get rid of it. Frankly, it seemed to me that they could care less, despite numerous emails to them. I finally closed all my accounts with them and moved to Comcast, which has much better security. But, the bottom line is that they stole my email list and continue to send emails to my family & friends every so often. Talk about creepy! I feel for you and hope you can stop it. Let me know if you do, but definitely make sure your computerfiles haven't been compromised any more! Lynn

Windows Mail is what they call Outlook Express in Vista and it can be set up with your internet provider very easily and then you could use it as the default. Just call your provider and they walk you thru it. Or just click on it in "all programs" and it has a set up program built in if you know the info it asks for. I have Yahoo mail and Hot mail, etc. and I have never been able to get any to set up as the default as you are asking. All my email thru online addresses go thru Windows Mail (OE). If you figure out how to do it differently, please post back as I'd like to know too.

urlee Apparently my default mail is Windstream. Windstream is my ISP and has been for several years. I will go to their web site and try to change that. No, leave that as is. My ISP is my default mail too! When you downloaded WLM, did you have to enter info from your server like incoming pop3, and outgoing smtp? I am guessing that is what makes WLM work as default to my knowledge. because when the Windows Live software was downloaded, what I got was a Hot Mail address Are you sure you downloaded WLM for Win7 and NOT the Hotmail one?. If so, then it looks like your hotmail one went default on you like it did me automatically before.

it may not be your hotmail account doing it at all! It very well could be anyone that has your email address listed in their address book. those type infections spoof the address, select one from the address book and use that as the senders info, so that the real one is not aware they have the problem. Actually since it does have your address as the sender info is almost certain it is NOT yours sending it. Someone you know likely has an infection and it spoofed your name and address from their address book which makes you look like the guilty party.

I would ask someone that is getting those emails to open up the header info and get all the full header info and send it to you so you can try to trace where it is actually coming from. sometimes with full header info you can figure it out sometimes not.

in the old hotmail you could push alt + enter and see the headers.

every mail client has some way to view the header info you can find it pretty easily with a google search.
