Get Organized: Mail Cubbies for the Kitchen
Looking to squeeze some extra storage space out of your kitchen? Try sneaking a few mail slots into your island
Countertop clutter is a problem for just about everyone — no matter how big or small your kitchen is. Mail, magazines, bills, school reports, and kids' artwork seems to pile up at an incredible place. And there never seems to be a great place to put it all, especially at a moment's notice.
While remodeling this Tennessee kitchen, interior designer Polly Blair decided to solve this problem for her clients. The clients entertain quite often, with most of their guests ending up in the kitchen, so they wanted a large island where they could have every entertaining necessity at the ready. They also wanted plenty of space to store countertop clutter. In an attempt to fill every nook and cranny in the kitchen island, she came up with this smart storage fix.

They also wanted plenty of space to store countertop clutter. In an attempt to fill every nook and cranny in the kitchen island, she came up with this smart storage fix.
Blair worked with the fabricator to make sure they could size the cabinets to create this nook at the end. She decided on the size of the pockets by measuring out magazines and envelopes, allowing for an extra 1.5 inches. She then cut cardboard to the correct size, and told the fabricator to build pockets to fit tightly around the pieces. The nook was built into the cabinetry, with simple pull-out doors to cover it when its not being used.
If you're in the midst of a kitchen remodel, this is a great storage solution to consider. It's also something that could easily be used on other parts of the house — built-in desks or entryway cubbies for example.
