Comments (42)When we have a county burn ban, our commissioners usually lift it once our KBDI drops below 600. I don't know that the OFS uses that same criteria when making recommendations to Gov. Fallin, but I have been expecting them to lift the ban for some counties for a couple of weeks now, so the move didn't surprise me. We are having small fires in our county, but nothing that has gotten the least bit rowdy or out-of-control lately, so I think that they could lift even our burn ban (our KBDI is 661 this morning) right now (which they did not), and we wouldn't have serious wildfire trouble at this point in time. The trouble will come after you have a few frosts and killing freezes if it is still very dry and then you have all that dry, standing vegetation which will burn easily whether it is dead annual vegetation or dormant perennial vegetation. We need to have a really wet fall and winter so that the winter fire season isn't bad. Nothing about our soil is in good shape, Larry, except where I've been watering in the veggie garden and around the fruit trees. We're starting to see cracks in the soil near the house where we haven't had them before, so today and tomorrow I'm going to try to water long and hard in those areas to try and get those cracks to close back up. I'll probably have to water a while, let it soak in, then water again, etc. You know how hard it is to get clay to absorb water when it is rock-hard. Carol, I imagine it will be a real relief to everyone to be able to burn that piled up wood from the big storm that hit your area. As long as it is sitting there, it is such a fire hazard. I'd rather be able to burn that stuff deliberately and have it under control than to have a raging wildfire burn through the area and get it. Some of the Texas counties have been lifting their burn bans here and there along the river. One county made the announcement lifting their burn ban, then said that people should NOT go out and burn brush or do prescribed burning of land for brush removal because it still was too dry to burn. That made me wonder why they lifted the burn ban if they were going to stand there and say "but don't do any burning". That whole thing made no sense. Comments (27)Well, after spending an hour last night composing an entertaining (to me anyways) and probably overly-dramatic letter, the credit finally posted to my credit card. And, whether by accident or purpose, they ended up just charging me $10 more per panel than the original sale price, and didn't re-charge me shipping again. Which, since this is what I was so annoyed about, I guess I don't have anything else to complain about. (except for the wasted time and effort). I do appreciate all this support though :) and if anything, I did feel like I was back in English 101, trying to compose a persuasive argument-type essay (even quoted the new president from the forward of their new catalog)....See MoreStep-daughters gonna be the death of my husband
Comments (24)You stated that pregnancy, unlike cancer, is a choice, in response to my question as to whether it would be ok for a man to divorce his wife while his daughter was undergoing chemo. The implication in that statement is that the pregnancy WAS her fault. Of course I am a parent, and I was married for many years. I responded to your post originally because, in response to organic_maria who suggested that the divorce may have deeply affected the girl, you said you did not think that was not the case. Divorce ALWAYS affects children deeply, even in homes where there is a lot of conflict. I do not believe that excellent fathers divorce their spouses while their children are in crisis - no matter what their age or who is responsible. It is very rare that someone needs to leave right this second - unless the father was being physically abused by his wife. I believe that what the girl needed during her pregnancy was parents who were devoting most of their emotional energy toward her, rather than concentrating on a divorce and/or a new relationship. I have yet to meet anyone, no matter who filed, who did not find the process of divorce after a long term marriage to be emotionally draining. I believe that excellent parents do not date while they are still married, even in states like mine where it takes a lot longer than a few months to divorce when you have kids. I believe that excellent parents (and sensible people in general) do not remarry with a matter of months after divorce. I am sure you have read the axiom about 1 year of recovery for every 5 years of marriage. There is a lot of truth to that. Not only the parents, but the children also need time to recover before a stepparent is brought into their lives....See MoreReplacement parts for Restoration Hardware Pivot Mirror
Comments (15)Hello, my name is Gloria. I purchased my mirrors in 2005. I also lost the finials to one of my Restoration Hardware Grafton style pivoting mirror. I have been trying to replace them since 8/2018 with no luck. I found out that RH changed vendors for their mirrors and the finials are now made as one piece instead of the two piece style. Also, after looking at the pictures above, the frame of the mirror where the finials attach - the part that protrudes and the finial fits over - has also changed. The older mirrors like mine has a nut closest to the frame instead of the round piece and then has the longer round piece, but instead of a slit in the end of the piece, I have a threaded opening for a screw. The first part of the finial has a hole to receive the second part which is the screw. The screw is a large decorative piece that is fed through the finial and screws into the threaded part of the protruding round piece of the mirror. It is used to loosen/tighten and adjust the position of the pivoting mirror. I have a model number for the lost finials and sent RH pictures of the finials I needed as well as a picture of the mirror where the finials attached. I was sent the newer finials that don't fit over the screw on the mirror. You are right about the finials being interchangeable, as I tried the Grafton and the Bistro styles and the part that fits onto the mirror is identical. I inquired about the previous vendor and was told that they were not allowed to divulge that information. I would love to know who it was and contact them. Anyone know who it was? I am going to check into the Pottery Barn pivoting mirrors to see if that finial fits since it is made like the RH mirrors. I'll also take a look at the metal hanging strips to see if that will work, but I wonder how they attach to the mirror and if the part of the mirror where the finials attach are just going to be sticking out the sides looking crazy. If anything works, I'll let you know....See Moreadvertguy2
