Think smart for Ashley...

Yes, in spite of feeling like carp, she's been skipping the vicodan for the past three days and studying, she says she's taking the Boards tomorrow if it kills her!

So, she's in Grand Rapids at the Pearson Tsting Center tomorrow morning at 7:30 am. Think smart for her, will you?

Greenhouse/shed-Thinking Outside Smart Greenhouse
Q

I bought a 6 X 8 one about 12 years ago. still standing here at the JerseyShore, even thru Sandy. BUT one of my windows blew out. we tried taping, caulking, to no avail. it's now sitting in its place on top on the greenhouse but with a stiff wind it'll blow off again. I don't want to spend the money to replace it, but I would take any suggestions as to what else I can use up there. you really can't screw or hammer since the parts are all plastic. ugh. also yes, it gets over 100 in there on any given summer day. so I go in there basically in the spring and fall. I have an outside cat that uses it for shelter. I can winter over some perenials in pots and start seeds in the spring. also looking to make it cuter in there. that's all I got. thanks!!

Do you think palms are smart?
Q
Comments (16)
I have been kind of wondering about this myself lately. Not so much about palms, but after watching one of my Passiflora and how it grew, I began contemplating the idea that perhaps they (plants) are smarter than we give them credit for. Perhaps they're just a different kind of intelligent that we haven't figured out yet. The case with my Passiflora (which is grown from seed) was that it started growing 4 vines almost from the start. They grew painfully slow and I was wondering if I was doing something wrong with it. Then, one night, one of those vines managed to touch the trellis and it veritably exploded in new growth. In about two weeks it had gone from a 5 inch length to almost 4 ft. But the other 4 vines were still growing slowly and only about 6-7 inches long. So, out of curiosity, I bent one of those vines so that it was in touch with the trellis. The next morning it had put on close to 4 inches and had sent out it's tendrils to grab the trellis. In my twisted mind, I saw this as some sort of very primitive (or perhaps way too advanced) intelligence that let the plant decide when it wanted to let certain parts of itself grow. It wasn't wanting food, it wasn't wanting water, it wasn't wanting sun or shade, it was just wanting something to grab ahold of.

Over-thinking, or smart planning?
Q
Comments (18)
The kitchen that we will wind up with is VASTLY different than the one I would have had when I first started this journey a little over a year ago. Would I have been happy with the new kitchen that would have been created back then? Well, probably for the most part, yes. Because it would have been so much better than what we currently have. But, knowing what I do now, I would be so disappointed with that initial kitchen because we wouldn't have had the functionality that I think we'll wind up with. There are concessions without a doubt in our kitchen layout. There are things that other people wouldn't be happy with here and would try to change. But, when factoring in the budget and the ability to change certain things, I think that we've come up with a the best that our kitchen can be. And it's a far cry from the original. That being said, we wouldn't have normally been this long on our planning - our kitchen was supposed to have been installed back in September of last year, but our guy flaked on us and it put us back to the drawing board to find a new cabinet maker and GC. We actually took delivery of our appliances (was supposed to be getting everything) and those were selected prior to finding GW or I may have selected differently. All in all, I think we'll be happy with those anyway as they are "higher end" than what most of our family and friends have anyway and certainly higher end than I've ever cooked on before. I know that there are things I'll wish were different about the kitchen - already I know this...but, these are things that are done to keep within a budget that we set and couldn't be "fixed" without significantly adding to our overall budget. I think that a few months of research and decision making is probably "appropriate" and warranted for such a large project and one that isn't likely to be endeavored upon again in the near future.

What a trooper! I predict that she will feel spontaneously much improved when this is behind her. I'm sending what smart cells I have. Judging from the state of my life, I apparently haven't been using them much lately.

I also am sending her my smart cells. I still remember taking my boards over 30 years ago. My roommate and I had a breakfast for about 20 in our class. We all left in several cars for the exam and the most uptight girl in our class mooned us all while we were driving on the interstate.
Now that was a tension breaker.

Good Luck Ashley,

My guess is that Ashley has enough smarts and doesn't need any of ours. No doubt in my mind that she will ace it.

I am thinking smart thoughts for Ashley -- E=MC^2; a^2 + b^2 = c^2; the golden mean is the desirable middle between two extremes, one of excess and the other of deficiency.

Okay, I'm out of brain power now. (GO ASHLEY!)

OK, you can all have your smart cells back, she just called and tole me she "just barely" passed. She needed a 75 and got 82, so I think that's a pretty decent margin of safety, although she was disappointed she didn't do better.

So now I'm on my way to Lansing to celebrate!

thanks everyone, for the loan of the smart cells, be sure when you're sorting though you get your own back. Or can we "swap" and thereby gain some new knowledge? (grin)

So glad she passed! I think that under the circumstances, the score she made is fine. What boards are you talking about?

So Ashely is in Grand Rapids, and you are going to Lansing to celebrate? I guess you can pick her up on your way. I hope she is feeling better - but I also avoid Vicodan except for extreme emergencies. I wouldn't be able to study if I took it either.

Congratulations to the both of you!

Lars, Ashley was takaing the state certification board examination to complete her radiology training, her next step is to actually find a job as an x-ray tech or some other radiology position.

She was tested in Grand Rapids, but I was on my way to Lansing to meet Cooking Forum friends, so I celebrated in Lansing and she celebrated....somewhere else, LOL. She's still out with her friends.

I'm also glad they know right away, although it takes 6 weeks to get the official papers. The wonders of technology!
