Update on DH, reunion and family

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. Well it is Sunday and we got through the reunion all right. Actually it went great. We had 12 classmates out of 42 show up and 25 little kids. My folks rushed home and were there late Friday night and the girls stayed at my sisters that night. My folks put up 2 pools and also got one of those giant little tykes water slides that inflate. People showed up around 1:30 and stayed until after 8. We all had so much fun, 2 of my sisters came over and helped out with the kids, they had fun on the water slide and pools, my dad got one of the horses out and they had pony rides, he also had his full sized popcorn maker going and they ate tons of popcorn and we also had popsicles and watermelon to cool off. I made too much food as usual and my mil made several salads, we just grilled out hotdogs and had a lot of fun. Those that wanted to had brought beer so we just sat around talking about the high school days and comaparing current notes. I can tell you it was a blast and took my mind off dh. He did come down and had fun too.

We go see the surgeon on Tuesday and see what he has to say. I think he is planning on doing more tests and another CT scan. They got his pain under control. They think that it was a combo of the gall stones and they discovered an infection in his intestinal area so put him on iv antibiotics. His blood sugar has really dropped since Friday and we are working on getting it under control. The Dr. thinks that the gall stones and infection brought out the diabetes. She is positive about it and that with diet, exercise, cutting out sugar and oral meds that we can get things under control. They won't do anything about the gallsones and hernia until the diabetes is under control. All in all it really has been a long week but in a way I am glad that it happened. DH hasn't had a physical in 11 years and is overweight. While there I asked Dr. to do a full work up on him and am curious to see what his cholestoral is. The hardest thing is that he really isn't a fruit or veggie person. I am sure you know that between the kids and I most of our diet is veggies and fruits and meat is a side dish. Right now his blood sugar has been staying around 180 which is in the high range of what the diabetes consultant wants but is way better than what it was before.

Now to try and catch up on my sleep, we are also in the processes of moving the girls and Hayden down stairs and had carpet put down on Friday so the house has stuff every where. My mom is going to come up on Tuesday and stay a couple of days to help me catch up. With me being pregnant and Dan's hernia the furniture moving will have to wait until we get some family to come up and help move things around our 2 story house.

Wanted to add more. I got supper on the table and Rhiannon started yelling that Peyton was throwing up all over her dinner plate and floor. I got that mess cleaned up and DH gave her a bath. I went down and was putting in some laundry when I came up both Peyton and Hayden were standing in the kitchen crying. Peyton had gotten sick again and threw up all over baby brother. So got both them cleaned up and rocked Peyton until she fell asleep. I laid her down in their new bedroom ( with new carpet) and ten minutes later she was crying and I went in and she had thrown up all over her bed and the new carpet, guess we broke in the new carpet. She just came out into the living room and she curled up in DH's chair and is asleep. I will wait a bit and put her back to bed.

Isn't it great to be a wife and a mama somedays??

Stacie - I'm amazed that you've managed to handle all this without going off the deep end. Props to you girl!!

Glad to hear that DH is doing better. Sometimes it takes a wake-up call to make needed changes and maybe this was is, as painful as it's been. Hopefully he'll soon be on the road to recovery - this sounds like a positive turning point!

Stacie you have really been challenged with so much going on in your house! Glad to hear the reunion went off well.....25 kids! OMG.
I would have been a nervous wreck. Fortunately your family was there to help.

Good that your DH is having his condition monitored and is improving.
Hopefully you will be able to introduce him to more fruit and vegetables to help get his weight down.

I feel so sorry for you with Peyton's being sick all over the house....and over the baby as well.
You need a gold star now (and a glass of wine) after handling that. Hopefully she is better now and you can take a rest.

I am so happy to hear about dh's gf...and so sad to hear the other story...when they are part of anothers lives for so long I can understand....I am still amazed the my ex's mom is still alive after losing her dh.....she is doing okay but I thought she would have just willed herself gone.....Stacy

If Harvard Medical School can be believed: "Aerosolized coronavirus can remain in the air for up to three hours. A mask can help prevent that spread." To me that means it could linger in a venue where an infected person breathed but I would not interpret that to mean you bring the aerosol home with you unless you inhaled it. I don't think it would persist on your mask, clothing, etc. - more that you would pass through the aerosol like you pass through an invisible cloud of cigarette smoke or perfume. For the time being it seems most people have a choice to wear a mask or not which I think is the right thing after two years of this. Much as I believe in taking reasonable precautions I think we've seen that we aren't going to have much luck controlling this thing with mandates. That isn't even working in China. I think it's going to continue to run its course for however long with who knows how much morbidity and mortality. Everyone has to decide how they want to live (or die) with it. People just aren't 100% altruistic - they also have their own interests in mind. Everyone's self interests are different and we are often strongly opposed to what others want for themselves - the nature of mankind it seems. By the way, on the original topic, we have passed our ten day isolation/mask period - YAY!!

Thank you for the update Lyban. I liken grief to waves in a storm. At first they knock you over from every which way and seem never to stop. With time they come less often and less powerful, but then every once in awhile, for no reason at all, a rogue wave will come along and toss you again. It's only because we've loved so much that we grieve so deeply. Sending you thoughts of comfort and solace.

Stacie, sorry to hear about your DH's newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes and his other GI issues. I am a nutritionist/registered dietitian and I work in an endocrine research clinic. It is indeed possible that his blood sugar can be in the 400's when undiagnosed, and his level will also be affected by infection and the stress of pain/illness.

There are so many excellent oral diabetes meds these days. Lifestyle changes are the key (along with blood glucose monitoring at home and meds) to controlling diabetes. Your DH has a lot to live for and lots of motivation to make some changes. Even a 5-7% modest decrease in his body weight as he is overweight will make a big difference in improving his diabetes control. He does not need to give up sugar. He does need to start eating a much more healthy overall diet including veggies & fruits. One of the best resources for what people with diabetes should eat is the American Diabetes Association book "16 Myths of a Diabetic Diet" by Karen Chalmers. It's on Amazon.com for ~$12 plus shipping. I highly recommend this newly updated book. Your library may have it. Also, it would be good for him to attend somem diabetes management classes at a local hospital -- provided they are taught by a CDE (certified diabetes educator) who is up to date on the latest management/nutrition recommendations for people with diabetes.

I'm sure he can do it with your help! So may people have diabetes, and it can be very successfully managed. Rose

With weight loss, my ex is able to control his type 2 diabetes with diet. He was HUGE. I mean HUGE at 380. Still is but is down about 70 pounds. Losing weight and adding exercise will have all kinds of positive effects on your DH's well-being, physical and mental.

Change is hard and most people don't make changes until they are forced to. He has the benefit of your great culinary skills and garden bounty on his side. Lucky man!

I agree, change is hard, Dad is fighting diabetes and has already lost a leg. It complicates his heart problems too, and he's just now deciding he needs to "change the way he eats". Good luck to your husband, but at least with your cooking and gardening he'll have lots of the fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables he should be eating. The best advice I can think of is that you and he should go together to see a dietician or nutritionist, so he can hear personally what he should and shouldn't be eating.

Isn't it awful when the kids are sick? I remember one night when Ashley threw up in her bed, then in Amanda's, then in mine. Every single bed in the house was dirty. Sigh. At least she didn't throw up on her sister. Oh wait, yes she did. I can empathize, as I'm sure most of us mothers can.

25 kids though? Not for any reason! I do it once a year at Christmas and I think we had 14 under the age of 12. It was nearly more than I wanted to deal with, I can't even imagine doubling that number.

We had 25 kids all under the age of 11. It was crazy fun. Luckily 2 of my sisters and my folks were there to help keep an eye on them. They had so much fun on the giant water slice and the other 2 pools full of toys. I am lucky to have my parents so generous to let us have the party here. They have a large garage where dad puts his motorcycles and it has a bathroom and is air conditioned. We were able to put all the tables and food inside so didn't have to worry about it. Dad also has a professional popcorn maker and little bags and the kids ate 4 batches of popcorn. It was a blast to have all the kids play together. None of us has gotten together with all the kids so this was a first time and would love to do it again. A lot of our classmates live out of state and couldn't make it. I hope we get a better turn out for our 20th reunion in 5 years.

Oh Stacie, I will certainly keep your DH in my thoughts. I remember what the gallstones felt like, yeouch! Hope that his diabetes is controlled soon so that they can deal with his other issues, and that he can just feel better.

I hope the kids are feeling better soon. I hope they don't all get this! I'll never forget when Zane had rotovirus, he was soooo sick, puked in his bed, in the hallway, in the bathroom floor, in the tub, then had to sit on the potty and puke in the trash can at the same time. DSW gets sick if he's around puke, so he couldn't help. No sooner did Zane get feeling better than DSW got it. We went to the hospital with him as his blood sugar tends to run low.

You get a gold star for handling all of this, while pregnant! Wow. :)
