I checked in tonight hoping for an update, and this was just what I needed! I'm glad it went well, Trish.

I can relate to your comment about not quite being prepared to see him in that condition. During my dad's bypass surgery, I held up pretty good in the waiting room. But after my mom and I went in to see him the first time, we left and I had an emotional breakdown right there in the hallway. Seeing him with all of those machines and looking like he did...well, it was more than I could handle!

Please take care of yourself, and we'll keep praying for your DH.

I hope you got some good sleep, Trish and feel better and stronger today, you've been thru a lot! Yay for good people and great doctors!

I got some great sleep! A family friend is going to see him this morning for the first visit and I will go in just a little bit. I had to run a load of laundry as I was out of clean jeans! Jim actually called me twice this morning and says while it hurts, he is doing ok. He was getting ready to go on his first walk around the unit. He wants so badly to get into a regular room where the visitation hours are normal. I can only see him for 20 minutes every 2 hours right now. But he already complained about the grits they gave him for breakfast! Only in the South would you find grits on the breakfast menu. Jim never cared much for them. His lungs are clearing out nicely, he WAS a pack a day smoker. But just hearing him made my day. He is on the mend and healing nicely! He will of course be on several medications from now on, but we can deal with that. He is alive and that is what is most important. He was able to talk to our youngest boy this morning too. The oldest was at work, but both will be seeing him today. Thank you all so much for caring and letting me share with you! You are such dear friends to me.

Trish, I bet you didn't eat a bite yesterday. Today you will see the operation was successful and he will be fine. So don't wear yourself out by staying too long at the hospital. He will be very tired and want to rest probably so you need to go home and relax and EAT. He will need your help when he gets home so take as good care of yourself as the hospital staff is of him.

Whew! Surgery over...on to recuperation. Are you going to have to tie him down to let the healing happen? Some patients think they need to 'man up' and prove that they're *just fine* before that's humanly possible.

What relief you must be feeling! My Jim had triple bypass 15 years ago, and he is doing well.He was a pack a day smoker too, and on the day of his surgery I threw his cigarettes and his lighter in the hospital trash. He couldn't drive for awhile, so he quit and hasn't smoked since. Get some rest and my prayers are with you and Jim.

I hope he keeps improving! Good news for sure.

My youngest boy (18) threw away all of the lighters and cigarettes on Thursday. Jim understood this morning that some of his lifestyle choices brought him to this place. He is a little overweight, drank too much caffeine and of course smoked. He knows he is done with all of that. They did give him some tea at dinner time but he asked for non-sweetened. He likes water so he will be ok with that. His worst habit is those darn energy drinks- RedBull and such. No more! He will have to eat more fruit and veggies of course. We eat pretty healthy most of the time. Very very little fast food and he does not drink soda at all. I think the worst will be the smoking, but since I quit already maybe it won't be so bad.

Both boys came with me today. The youngest had a real hard time. He broke down after the first visit. He did a little better after the 2nd one, but I ended up sending him home. No use in upsetting both him and DH. He wants to go back tomorrow and try again. My oldest boy (21) did better but even he had some tears. I did better and of course just talking to him and having him talk back was golden for me. We have a long road ahead but as long as we are walking it together I am good with that!

Good news Trish!! My DH had 3x bypass last fall; long ordeal. If your docs recommend going to rehab after hospitalization for a few days, DO IT. That is where he (and you) will learn care and feeding of him while recovering.

Mine stubbornly insisted on coming home (typical man thing) and wound up with staph infection and separated sternum which required going back in surgery for repair, then 6 weeks in skilled nursing care on antibiotics IV 3x a day.

I found out later that in-patient rehab for a few days was standard procedure here, but I wasn't made aware of that. Had I known, I would have put my foot down. He now realizes that he should have gone ahead with the rehab; might have saved a lot of pain and aggravation.

So glad to hear things are improving, you have my continued thoughts and prayers.

HOORAY! Hope he's like my DH and several others I know - soon telling everyone he didn't
realize how low his energy was until after the bypass & feels like he's 18 again.
