I only have a small space for a bathroom, so we would like to use this round shower door: http://tinyurl.com/6zwduaf. They are typically installed with those acrylic shower pans, but I hate the look of those acrylic pans. Can I tile instead? Has anyone done that, and if so, can you give me pointers on what to do? When I had the shower door guy out to measure, he made a point of checking how high the shower head was. Ours is on a sliding bar, so it can go up pretty high. We have a 6" curb and a 6' shower wall/door height, and it is fine with our standard 8' ceiling. Our "gap" is 18". Remember also that this "gap" benefits the air circulation in your shower to help dry it out so that you don't get moldy grout. Unless you have a very high shower head (very tall shower user) you should be fine.

Hi there, This is my first time posting in the bathroom forum (been hanging out in the appliance section), so I'm glad people have the same concerns I do about cleaning the shower! Apologies in advance if this is a bit tangental, but I've been looking at various shower surfaces for our new bathroom remodels. I like the look of tile/stone but absolutely abhor the idea of dealing with the grout and caulking -- it just seems like an inevitable problem. Those acrylic inserts appear to resolve this issue, but they're just so cheap feeling I don't think I can buy into it. Having recently visited a home show, I think I found a really interesting compromise called stonecraft (not sure if that's just the company brand name or the actual product name -- linked below). It's a plastic/cement mixture that they paint in two layers. The first layer goes on solid. Then they 'tape' the tile pattern you want, then apply the second coat (different colour). When the tape's removed, the first layer appears as the grout lines. I first looked at this for my patio deck, but the more I read into it, the more I liked it for other parts of the house -- including the shower (they even suggest it). My contractor worked on another house that used this outside and it really feels like a stone material. As it's painted on, it should be seamless (walls, floor, ceiling)and, therefore, a breeze to clean! Kind of hoping someone's used this and can share their experience, because it seems like a silver bullet. As for the doors itself, I'm wondering if anyone knows how long a shower stall would need to be to go 'doorless' without getting significant splashing out of water. I have a square basement shower (~38x42") that we changed to having frameless glass. There is water spray pretty much constantly on the door during my daily shower. The water bounces off my body onto the doors and when I’m whipping the handheld around, the door gets inadvertently sprayed. I have a fixed panel and a door that swings in and out. Like the other poster mentioned, there is a plastic strip (vertically) between the fixed panel and swinging door. No water seems to get through this vertical space. There is also a plastic strip (horizontally) at the base of the swinging door. There used to be two sort of layers of clear strips but one peeled off so now there’s just one strip which deflects the water somewhat but not entirely. When I finish showering (and squeegeeing the door), there is always a little puddle of water sitting on the curb but no water seems to spill over onto the bathroom floor. It’s just part of my routine to wipe the curb before I get out of the shower.
