Flash Drive won't connect to USB Hub

I just got a Sony 2 GB flash drive.

It works fine if I climb behind my computer and plug

it in directly to a USB port. But if I plug it into

my USB hub I get nothing. The directions say I can use a hub.

Is there anything I can do about this.

It's not easy to climb behind my computer and plug this in.

Do I need a powered hub? Can I get a USB extension cord?

What can I do. --Windows XP SP2

My question was going to be to ask you if this is a powered hub. I think that may be the answer to your problem. Is the port on your computer and your hub both USB 2? The flash drive probably won't work on USB 1.1.

And, yes you can get a USB extension cable.

I think there's two issues at work with your comment mikie. The first, which many historians have spoken about, is that the lost habits of letter and diary writing mean that much less material will be available for historical analysis in the future. Email archives aren't as common as boxes stuffed with old letters, and email archives typically have much more worthless stuff in them. The second thing, the changes in storage media over time, I think isn't so much of a problem. There used to be lots of stuff stored on 8 and 5.25 inch floppy disks. They're not lost to the future, that worth keeping was migrated to later generations of storage media. Places like the Library of Congress and National Archives are digitizing many parts of their collections to protect the availability of their contents for the future. All that stuff gets rolled forward as technology changes.

Checked my updates, found there were a couple for powerpoint,otherwisen, nothing. Since the Geek link is a tad more than I feel I can handle myself, will wait til someone with a bit more knowledge about these things than myself comes along. Should be someone here next week that has some basic skills in behind the scenes puter work, I am just to afraid to make any changes of any kind, I depend on this animal to keep me in touch with the outside world, and would be devastated if I couldn't do that. Therefore, as much as I appreciate your quick response, and probably is another spot on answer, I just don't want to risk it. Please bear with, and if I do get some results, will be back with a happy face I tell ya. Again, thank you for your kindness, and your gentle way of putting things.

Forgot to answer one of the other questions. It is a powered hub. I can plug my flash drive directly into the usb and it see it fine. It just doesn't see the hub. It didn't come with any software or drivers. I called tech support and the said to plug it directly into the wall and not the surge protector. I had to uninstall the unknown device and unplug/plug the usb cable back in. My computer recognized it as a "generic hub." Now, I'm back at square one. It appears to be an intermittent problem.

The port on my computer is USB 2.0
Not sure about the Hub.
I think wifes computer is USB 1.1 and it connects just fine.
It just transfers at a much slower rate.

Guess I need to try a powered hub.
I suspected that was the problem.

Hi Pooh, I'd get an extension and run that out, then plug the hub into the extension. If you have to use the flash drive, simply unplug the hub while you need it. Otherwise you could try a powered hub but it's no guarantee. Depends on the combination. Some things don't like hubs period.

I don't have a powered hub and it works fine for all my flash drives. I do have a usb extension because I got tired of crawling behind the computer.
Funny thing is 2 of 3 of my flash drives did not work on my neighbors hub and all work fine on mine.
I would format the Sony 2GB and see if it works then.

I'll try the USB extension cord.

That was the reason I got the hub a couple of years ago.
I couldn't find an extension cord.
I think I have have seen some since then.

For what it's worth, my sister's USB drive will not work in the USB ports on her keyboard and will only work it 2 of the 4 ports in her tower... All the ports work with her camera and her daughters cameras and USB drives... ( No extensions or power hubs on any of the ports )

Take a look at the rather long article linked below, it may offer some help.

When reading this take a closer look at the photo where he/she has the front connector plugs that fits on the motherboard and his hand showing. You see those 2 connectors off to the left? There really seems to be no place for those on some motherboard yet they need to be connected.
