Flash Drive won't connect to USB Hub

I just got a Sony 2 GB flash drive.

It works fine if I climb behind my computer and plug

it in directly to a USB port. But if I plug it into

my USB hub I get nothing. The directions say I can use a hub.

Is there anything I can do about this.

It's not easy to climb behind my computer and plug this in.

Do I need a powered hub? Can I get a USB extension cord?

What can I do. --Windows XP SP2

My question was going to be to ask you if this is a powered hub. I think that may be the answer to your problem. Is the port on your computer and your hub both USB 2? The flash drive probably won't work on USB 1.1.

And, yes you can get a USB extension cable.

What happens if you plug the printer in the second USB port and also when it is plugged in the front of the computer? Is it possible the mouse DIN connector has an oversized plastic housing causing both to be off off alignment slightly? Can you borrow another USB cable to see if yours has failed? Can you try the printer in another computer to ensure it is working correctly? Click Start/Control panel/System/Hardware/Device manager and scroll to the bottom for the USB jacks. Click the plus sign beside the USB connectors to drop the menu down and see if they are all working correctly. Do that by right clicking on each one and clicking Properties

Whew! I took out the replacement second internal hard drive (and the external hard drive). Rebooted - everything booted up fine. Then I shut down. Reattached the external drive - booted up - everything's fine. So does it seem that the replacement drive from WD is bad as well? (I did not put the 2TB drive back in - but it was working fine before. Again - this drive was bought for when I get around to setting up a dual boot XP/Windows 7 drive - and until my family crisis - and multiple electronic/tech failures are resolved, I'm not going to tackle that one.) Don't know why it wouldn't boot from the original hard drive when the replacement second drive was installed. Any thoughts? since it does boot with the bad drive - although it mentions the hard drive problem and allows me to select F1 to continue. At least I'm up and running - and the main, original drive seems fine. (I have used Acronis - and did a back up and incremental over the summer. Then did a full clone in December when I thought the drive was failing. But I am still quite confused by the acronis instructions - and would like to start from scratch. Now I have a 2TB external drive and would like to make the proper kind of back up. How should I do this - as the words on some of instructions Raven often links use clone at one point but seem to be talking about a different kind of back up. One complication is that the original thread for acronis 2010 - with pics - is gone now and acronis 2011 instructions are more fleshed out). I have Acronis 2010. Thank you. Lynn.

The least expensive way to do with is to simply connect both computers to the same home network, share the folder(s) that contain the files she wants to keep, and simply copy the files from the old machine to the new. Certainly you could use a flash drive as well. You don't need a >10 GB drive to copy the data unless it's one big file. Just copy the first 100 files, then the second 100, etc. A 4 GB drive should be under $10 and 8 GB under $15. For occasional use, it really doesn't matter what drive you buy.

Hi DA, On the back of the package it says this. Interface: USB 2.0 (Also compatable with USB 1.1 Ports) Operating System: Windows Vista, XP, 2000 Macintosh 9x and higher Linux kernel 2.6 x and higher Additional Functions: Password Security ( Supported on Windows operating systems only) Doesn't that Verbatim come with a U3 application already installed. I don't see it anywhere on the package. it should put an icon on your System Tray/Notification Area. Yes it does put an icon on my System Tray/Notification Area. When finished just double click on the U3 icon and a small window will appear in the lower right quadrant. Select Eject. When I double click on the Icon a box pops up and says this. Select the device that you want to unplug or eject, and then click Stop. When Windows notifies you that it is safe to do so unplug the device from your computer. Under Hardware Devices: USB Mass Storage Device I highlight USB Mass Storage Device and then click Stop and another box pops up and says,Confirm devices to be stopped. Choose OK to continue. Windows will attemp to stop the following devices, after the devices are stopped they may be removed safely. I highlight Verbatim Store'n'Go and click on OK. I hear a little pop noise and everything in that box including the one that I highlighted (Verbatim) disappears and so does the icon. That's when I know to pull out the USB Drive. That pop noise as I call it is a normal windows sound not a problem with the computer. Kind of like when I turn my printer on Windows makes a noise to let me know it has connected. The port on my computer is USB 2.0
Not sure about the Hub.
I think wifes computer is USB 1.1 and it connects just fine.
It just transfers at a much slower rate.

Guess I need to try a powered hub.
I suspected that was the problem.

Hi Pooh, I'd get an extension and run that out, then plug the hub into the extension. If you have to use the flash drive, simply unplug the hub while you need it. Otherwise you could try a powered hub but it's no guarantee. Depends on the combination. Some things don't like hubs period.

I don't have a powered hub and it works fine for all my flash drives. I do have a usb extension because I got tired of crawling behind the computer.
Funny thing is 2 of 3 of my flash drives did not work on my neighbors hub and all work fine on mine.
I would format the Sony 2GB and see if it works then.

I'll try the USB extension cord.

That was the reason I got the hub a couple of years ago.
I couldn't find an extension cord.
I think I have have seen some since then.

For what it's worth, my sister's USB drive will not work in the USB ports on her keyboard and will only work it 2 of the 4 ports in her tower... All the ports work with her camera and her daughters cameras and USB drives... ( No extensions or power hubs on any of the ports )

Take a look at the rather long article linked below, it may offer some help.

When reading this take a closer look at the photo where he/she has the front connector plugs that fits on the motherboard and his hand showing. You see those 2 connectors off to the left? There really seems to be no place for those on some motherboard yet they need to be connected.
