I'm not familiar with Win 98 (I'm not familiar with XP either ... but what the?) but as always check your cables. There have many anxiety attacks over computer and peripheral performances posted on this forum due to an electrical plug not all the way in the wall or a loose cable connection, or as in my case recently, the electrical sockets used for my printer's electricity are controlled by a wall switch...and of course someone flipped the wrong switch and I thought I had a dead printer...it happens. Now with XP when you print you have to make sure the correct printer or device is highlighted in the print box, its easy to overlook, especially after a few years. This USB hub...I'm assuming is for a laptop? You aren't going over your computer's capacity with everything plugged in? Plug the printer directly to your computer. If you are using a hub that might be the problem ... they do wear out, as we all do. If all of that checks out, well it might be time to upgrade to XP...as you know '98 is no longer supported. I don't know what extent Microsoft interprets "Not Supported". The reason I say this is its time to check your drivers and maybe reinstall them. I have been in driver hell myself. The number of times XP Windows has reported a device or driver was working properly when it wasn't is more than I have fingers and toes and I still have all of them. You can get your original drivers off your basic install disc...so I've heard...if you place it in your multi-drive after your desktop is up. (If you do it before your desktop is up and viewable you might be on your way to reinstalling Windows...that's what Best Buy told me anyway. I'm too lazy to check it out today.) Or you can subscribe to a place like Driver Agent DriverAgent.com). They will do a scan. Sometimes they are wrong and supply you with downloads that don't apply, but in those cases the driver just doesn't install, I've never heard of or had damage from Driver Agent myself. I have gotten many drivers back and up and running through them...mostly my realtek sound drivers after an electrical storm. I'm just too stupid to figure out which driver I need when I go to the manufacturer's site. I get lost in the Intel site...I've even downloaded the wrong drivers and updates from Toshiba ... who told me I needed them through their automatic update service. Drivers are something I don't want to think about...its so confusing, and Windows is less than useless with their driver recommendations. Make sure your cables and plugs are not fried and conducting current and memo groups like they should, check out that hub by plugging the printer directly into your computer and pray that you won't get lost in driver hell..or that your hard drive is failing. marf

you can also get a powered usb hub which has it's own electric plug which you plug into the outlet, that way it is not using the power from the pc it has it's own power and then those items that usually must be plugged directly into the pc usb can be plugged into the powered usb hub. I have many usb hubs I use daily and never have installed any thing to make them work I hate adding un-needed junk. I just plug a usb cable into the pc run it to my desktop and plug my hub into that cable, works like a charm on all my computers. I do use a powered usb hub for some things. I have about 4 usb hubs I got at biglots for $6 each that are excellent they are not powered but they are 2.0, you want to make sure any you get are 2.0 hubs, often you can find really cheap ones but then find they are not 2.0 so are much slower. I have another that is from Radio shack and has been used for years now with no problems.

I take your point re allowing Comcast to replace the modem ;) if it's cooked, however, if you're in business you may not want to wait a week til they can come out if it's busy following a severe storm....one argument in favour of buying your own I suppose - downside of unplugging the modem for an extended period? It may lose its provisioning, which will mean you'll probably get a 'welcome to comcast' screen which you can't get around til you contact them...not usually a big issue and if you set your DNS servers to use Open DNS not so much of a problem although your speed is usually 'shaped' or limited too. Your laptop, having a battery, is a form of ups in itself minus the robust surge protection, but a decent surge protector will help. If you have an external back up drive, always a good idea, get a bus-powered one which connects just with an usb or firewire cable and requires no other power cable, this will run from the laptop's battery til you can shut down...but I still think a ups is a cheap investment for any essential powered accessories like modems routers, back up drives etc. Mine paid for itself in thirty seconds when the power dropped briefly while editing a video (my former business) no damaged hardware, my render wasn't interrupted, and no corrupted data. Just today I had to run a winsock reset for a customer who was affected by a severe storm and a power outage, no electrical damage but the computer experienced some corruption nevertheless. How much is your data worth? Getting a business class internet account may be wise, your comcast terms probably say you are *not* allowed to run/do any sort of business on a residential account, on the upside the business svc should offer better/more helpful products. Glad to hear you unplug the data side too, however, leaving the phone line in has a risk, if it connects to your all in one fax printer, it still has a path to your computer. A smart individual would build an isolating cutoff box capable of disconnecting power, data/coax/phone altogether with a high degree of isolation (you watch, they'll be on the market next week)
