Machine won't acknowledge the new HD, suggestions?

Received a new Iomega HD, plugged in, nothing, went to website, found link to won't acknowledge, and still nothing, followed trouble shooting, am in a quandry, thought this would be so EASY? meet the queen of hard knocks people, if sumpin bad is gonna happen, it will.

I have done the puter shut down, and restart,

BTW, my S/N is U4BA261308, in case that yields some more info at the site, but don't think so.

Both plugs are in the machine, supposed to be 2 in machine, and the 1 for the HD and I have good contact there.

This plug and go thing is a puzzle, have green lite and is go, what am I missing, or what should I be looking for as a drive that would show up, I have Floppy (A) local disk (C), and DVD-RAM-(D) showing on the listing in mY computer.

Thanks for any clues. XP as OS, what other info needed?

Quick install in book says:

Connect the mini connector on the USB cable to the back of the drive-done

Connect the standard USB connactors on the cable to USB ports on your computer.-done

PC users, the drive icon should appear in my computer or WindowsExplorer(don't know what that is)

Tells me how to use the drive, and I am not disconnecting as there is nothing to worry about losing, and no icon in the taskbar either.

Drive not detected-Try restarting-done-make sure you are using the USB cable that came with the drive, make sure both lines of the cable are connected to the computer-done

Try changing the connections to different USB ports, can't, only have 2.

Try the Microsoft link below, when the smaller window opens Fixit click on the Run now

It's worth a shot, let us know.

I have the same problem with my doberman and especially the pspillon. I want to use my free horse manure and the pap puppy keeps dragging it in the house. I can imagine beagles are awful with their great noses! We hunt jackrabbits on horseback with a beagle pack (like traditional foxhunting) here in Phoenix. Awesome little dogs. We also have a hound pack in Flagstaff and visit a harrier pack in CA. Anyway, I've only found fencing, especially a low electric fence to be effective. My doberman I was able to use a shock collar on a low setting. I only did it once but she's very, very sensitive. I haven't done it with the papillon, mainly because the collar is too heavy but also because she's much harder head than the Doberman so that I think she would simply learn not to pick up horse poop when the collate is on. The Doberman learned "mommy doesn't like me to pick up horse poop and made my neck buzz" which would be the more desirable response. My experience with hunting dogs is they have tunnel vision so if the collar is not on it's not going to work. The Doberman and some other working breeds are much different than hunting/hound breeds. Less tunnel vision and prey focus, more please my mommy focus. I haven't had my papillon puppy long enough to figure her out, she seems more along the lines of a border collie or spaniel, highly OCD and focused, off the charts smart but pretty independent as well. Anyway, with beagles, your best option would be a 4-6 inch high electric fence which you can make using 1/2 inch PVC pipe for your pole, drill holes to run wire through, no worries about needing insulator for this. Add two long pieces of rebar pounded into the grounded 3-4 feet deep, 3-4 feet apart. These are your grounds. For your charges, if you have acess to electricity you can use a cheap 110 charger. If not, I would highly recommend a solar charger which works fantastically. Make sure your grounds are kept damp as dry ground won't do as well. I water the ground poles every week if it doesn't rain. This type of system is very effective and not ugly system

Alright, I checked out "Application" first & found: a whole bunch of "Information", many "Warning" which had "Symantec AntiVirus" a few times, in large batches during a single day, "Ms Installer" a couple/few times, in batches of probably two, & "Userenv" everyday, in batches of two, right around the time I usually shut down the computer. I checked out "Internet Explorer" and there was nothing. I checked out "System" and there was a whole bunch of "Information", several "Error" & each of those were "Service Control Manager", & several "Warning" & most of those were "tcpip", plus a few "W32Time". I haven't checked out any of the other "Warning" & "Error". I don't know what to do b/c I'm computer-illiterate. I think I'll just print all this out after submitting my reply & take such to Best Buy during the computer's annual checkup under our performance service plan/extended warranty, which is in May & let the Geek Squad deal with it.

If the battery is dead as Mikie suggests they can be had for about $3. It is about the size of a quarter and easy to change. Be sure to remove the power cable and rest your bare arm on the metal frame while working inside the case, a tiny clip on one side holds the battery in place. You need to verify how many BIOS beeps you have then compare to the Dell chart here. Knowing that will be very helpful.

The receiver portion of the logic board has quit working. You can buy a logic board from any local opener service company. Sometimes you can call around and get a deal on a used board where they have changed out an opener due to mechanical problems but the electronics are still good. If you have the replacement board in hand it will be obvious to you how to go about changing it. Due to the cost and the age of your opener if you can't get a used board you might be ahead replacing the entire unit.

Checked my updates, found there were a couple for powerpoint,otherwisen, nothing. Since the Geek link is a tad more than I feel I can handle myself, will wait til someone with a bit more knowledge about these things than myself comes along. Should be someone here next week that has some basic skills in behind the scenes puter work, I am just to afraid to make any changes of any kind, I depend on this animal to keep me in touch with the outside world, and would be devastated if I couldn't do that. Therefore, as much as I appreciate your quick response, and probably is another spot on answer, I just don't want to risk it.
Please bear with, and if I do get some results, will be back with a happy face I tell ya.

Shaddy, my Iomega external drive has a plug that plugs into an electrical outlet as well as a USB plug that connects to the computer. Also there is an ON/OFF switch on the back of the case the drive is in. Does yours have any of that? Mine does show up as another drive on My Computer.

If you have only two USB ports on your computer, you would find a USB hub to be very helpful. I bought one several years ago at Wal-Mart (very inexpensive). It plugs into one of your USB ports on your computer but gives you an additional four USB connections. It also has a power cord so that it doesn't take all its power from the computer. I never use mine any more since my present computer has several USB ports on the back plus three on the front.

grandms, I have no other plugins, just into the HD, and the USB ports on the puter. I had no clue there was such a thing as you spoke of last, the hub, would be great when I want to load pictures, and also do moving to the HD, if such a thing ever happens!
It will tho, I am keeping an open mind on this, and tho I am anxious about doing anything to change things on the machine, could do some research, as all who have responded have given me a lot of fodder here to use.
I am busy the rest of the week with small chores, etc., so won't be getting back hopefully someone will have been able to open this can of worms and I will be fishing with them!
thank you all again for your information, is is most helpful, and bolsters my courage greatly. I know it can be done!

click the Start button, then select My Computer. What do you see?

You should see some drives, like Local Disk (C:) CD Drive (D:) etc. If the Iomega installed correctly, it will be listed here. It may say something like Iomega (E:) or Removable (F:) or something along those lines.

I have several usb hubs I love them, I keep one plugged into each pc and then have the hub laying out on top of my desk where it is easy to reach, no more reaching around the tower to find the usb port. I have bought several of them at Big Lots for under $10. Just be sure if you buy one you make sure it is USB 2.0 and not 1.1. Some come with a power cord some do not, the ones I use most of the time do not have a power cord they use the pc power from the usb port.

When you tried to locate the drive on the pc did you have the external drive turned on?

I, too, find USB hubs indispensable. However, I only buy the corded ones since the ones that just plug into the computer without their own power source can sometimes be underpowered depending on what all you have connected to them. And for those who aren't familiar with hubs, just be aware that a few USB devices won't operate, or won't operate reliably, unless directly plugged into the computer rather than the hub.
