LawnBoy 10641 Brand New won't Start Lawn Boy

Greetings,

So, I purchased a Lawn Boy 10641 at HD after reading/researching the reviews (CReports #1 in its class).

Got it home, set it up, added oil and fresh gas. Started right up, cut the lawn, great first time cut.

1 week later...

Started it up again, everything was fine, then it just clunked out and stopped. I said to myself, well this is strange? Tried to start it back up and the thing wouldn't work? Checked the oil, gas, connections, ---nothing?

Brought it back to HD, exchanged it for another.

Got home, repeated the process, with the brand new, second LB 10641 and it started up. However, the second, brand new one clunked out after 2-3 minutes.

I can't even get its started the choke is so hard to pull.

Once I manage to get it up - I'm nearly throwing my back out. I'm getting nothing.

So frustrated. So confused.

Since the same problem is occuring with the second machine, I'm beginning to think it's me. Am I missing something? I've read through the manual, etc. Pretty sure I'm doing everything by the book. I mean, this is a simple start and go machine.

Screw in handles, add oil, add gas, go?

Am I missing something>?

Any help will be much appreciated.

You stated fresh gas, so my idea is out the window. I believe this model has the Briggs & Stratton engine, in case anyone doesn't already know that.

Take them back to where they came from and buy a Husqvarna mower.With Husqvarn you get quality and value plus they are very reliable.
Im not sure whats going on with the lawnboys but I do know that the new ones are crap!I dont know of anyone that has been happy with a new lawnboy.Most people that seem to be happy with lawnboys are using the old mowers.
I am 100% happy with my new Honda powered Husqvarna 1021P 3in1 mower and it always starts very easy.I looked at a lot of different mowers before I decided to buy a Husqvarna mower and I am glad I bought the 1021P!
No matter whats going on with the lawnboys you paid alot of money and you should not have to deal with it!Your ownership of a new mower should be very pleaseant and worrifree!Id just scrap lawnboy and go with a nice affordable Honda powered Husqvarna mower and then you will be able to enjoy owning a mower again.

Sounds like the ignition isn't working sometimes. I would check out any switch on it that controls the ignition. Look for loose, corroded or frayed wires at the switch. If you find a loose wire, fix it and it still does the same thing, it might be in the switch. I might for test purposes connect the wires around the switch and see how that works. Of course, you'll have to cut it off the old-fashioned way while that switch is out of the loop - wear heavy gloves and pull the spark plug wire. :) Maybe you can get a new switch or adapt another one to work. You're lucky that old rascal still runs at all. Most likely, repeated starting attempts flood it, which would account for the rough running when it does make contact.

Rollerzeke, my personal opinion. There are much better oils you can be using besides Lawn Boy Brand oil. I'm not sure if they changed their formulation from about 12 years ago when I stopped using it, but wouldn't think they have. I don't like LB oil because of all the excessive smoke and carbon build up using it at the recommended ratio of 32:1. If you're adamant about using the best oil, then cost shouldn't really be a factor unless you use several quarts or gallons ie commercial business use. At the least, pick up some Echo Power Blend Oil-available at HD or any Echo shop of course. I'm runnning some mix now with this oil @ 40:1, even though they recommend 50:1. I broke in a new blower last year on a 50:1, and even a new old stock Echo trimmer power head that they had a factory rec of 20:1 being the engine was manued in the early 80's. I pulled the plug for out of curiousity, and the piston crown, cylinder and spark plug threads had a nice clear coat of oil on them. I thought that maybe this oil is more than capable of running any engine safely @ 50:1!? Still, I'm not going to run that or any oil semi or fully snythetic at anything less than 40:1. I just broke in a new Echo saw with that mix, saw no more smoke, ran great, no oily residue drip from the muffler. I'm using it this way in 2 of my LB's right now, and they seem to be running as clean as if it were drinking straight gasoline! Ocassional whiffs of euphoria to let me now there is oil in the fuel. I know Echo claims ANY OF THEIR engines will run safley regardless of mix ratio claimed in the manuals on a 50:1. I'm beginning to believe that although they would never put their head on the chopping block and claim ANY AND ALL 2 CYCLES will run safley on 50:1. I'm sure ANY LB engine using a good quality modern semi or fully synthetic will actually get better protection and cleaner running mixing @ 40:1 rather than using LB OIL @ 32:1. Again, my opinions and past experiences.

Tarheelman, I did have the cd pack replaced some 10 years ago--when it could not be restarted when hot. I don't really know how to test for spark--have to take the spark plug out, right? I've never done that. fordtech, I guess that would mean the repair shop also for me! Thanks for both of your suggestions. I was hoping for something simple--like, you know, siphon out all the gas, do the sheboygan ritual foozie dance around the container, put the gas back in and voila! working mower!

While a plugged muffler or plugged exhaust ports will keep a LB from running right, it will not keep it from at least firing a few shots. Engine couldn't possibly have run to that point. Cleaning the muffler depends on WHAT muffler your LB has. The one pc. steel ones can be thrown in your charcoal grill when you have finished cooking and left. Tap/blow out when cooled. The muffler for the model number given is a 2 pc. cast aluminum one which easily comes apart for cleaning. Use some SeaFoam in your fuel for a few tanks full. Your trouble could be a lot of things. That model is the first one with CDI which continues to be a weak spot with LB. However, you say you have good spark so shouldn't be that. Could be bad crankcase seals or bad reed valves. Walt Conner

skane; please give us a break on the Husky commercials. This problem has nothing to do with Lawn-Boy or Toro - it's something about that batch of B&S engines, which have been known as solid performers since the first power mowers. I think anyone with one of the 'Insight' mowers (which Toro is phasing out of Lawn-Boy and painting red) has a solid mower. These new LB models Toro has put in Home Depot are about as cheap as a decent mower can be, even though they incorporate features of the LB 'Insight' and the Toro 'Recycler'. With the usually reliable B&S engine, they should sell very well for Toro. I cannot imagine what is happening with the B&S engines.
lb2009; if you haven't already taken it back, review the owner's manual for starting procedures and see if you're not doing something. These new B&S engines are supposed to have an automatic choke, so there's no manual choke or primer. My guess is there's an adjustment problem with that cold-enrichment system.

Don't waste your time just take it back and buy a mower that is Honda powered.You don't need the hassles with tempermental B&S

Bought this same lawn mower (10641) this past weekend from HD. Started with one pull right out of the box. Worked well for about 5 mins and then it died. The starter cord is stuck. Taking it back to HD tomorrow.
lb2009, what was your eventual resolution?
