This is what I get when I plug in a flash drive.

Hi, I also have a computer with Windows ME and purchased the same flash drive with U3. This flash drive also could not be recognized on this computer. The problem is the U3 part that is installed on the drive. By putting the flash drive on a computer with Windows XP, the U3 part can be turned off which will allow it to work on a computer with Windows ME Then the U3 part can be turned on again if ever it is wanted. I went one step further and while installed on the computer with XP, I went to my computer, right clicked on this flash drive, clicked on format and removed the whole U3 part off the flash drive. It now works excellent on my computer with Windows ME.

What is the U3 for?

What puzzles me is, I purchased a cruzer mini 512MB four years ago $$$$ that does not have U3 and I carry, and transfer documents from one computer to another???????

Yesterday, I purchased a Cruzer Micro 1.0GB USB Flash Drive at the sale price of $14.99 which ends on the 13th, intending for it to be a Christmas gift. It has that U3 and skype etc. on it that I am wondering about?

I bought a SD Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive on the package it says AVAST is included - NOT! It's McAfee and a trail version only. Found that out after calling SD.

I was told to download AVAST to the flash drive if I wanted it by the tech support.

Thanks for everyones help with my flash drive.It is fixed now so will be using it often.Now another problem.It is proably simple but something I cant figure out need some expert knowledge.I have a Samsung monitor to another pc and it runs 98 .I turned it off by just unplugging from the outlet in wall and now the monitor wont come on.Any idea what it could be?Thanks a lot.

it is a samsung sync-master 700 monitor and when I plugged it back up the light will come on but nothing else.The keyboard will not light up either.Thanks for responding

I just decided to open that Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive I bought and am puzzled in it saying, QUOTE:"These steps are not required for Windows XP", and goes on to saying, Use the "Safe to Remove Hardware"???????

On my other Cruzer mini, I always use the safe to remove hardware! Why not this one?????

Do any of you use the Safe to Remove Hardware button before removing yours?

I use the 'Safe icon and stop it, or maybe more often when the laptop is powered down and I pick it up, I'll see it sticking out.
I figure anything that has voltage/currents, the contacts will have a break arc and memory is sensitive to that stuff.

In other words you use the Safely Remove Hardware.

If it shows up as a drive, I don't see why a person wouldn't because that is what that is for.

How in the "H" do you use the $%#@*& thing?

I plug it in and that darn U3 thing pops up!

You drag to the doc folder that comes when you right click on the removable drive then open that folder to see what you put in it?

Play with it... U3, If you want to delete it - you might first want look around at the sandisk site. Think they have a u3 removal tool and you can get replacement u3 software there for free, that only works on their brand.

I was looking at sfhill's reply and couldn't see where one could remove it. Did it get downloaded? The icon is there.
I don't think I would ever use it.
I like my mini cruzer BETTER because it doesn't have so much junk to wade through to get to where you drag the files you want onto it. But it is only 512MB and I had intended this one to be a gift but thought I could get another as I was curious as to how to run it.

urlee, First I plugged the Cruzer flash drive into the computer, then go to "My Computer". Now there is another drive icon on the computer. Double click on the new icon to make sure that the Cruzer flash drive shows up. Then click out of it. I believe on my computer, it shows up as an "L" drive. Now right click on this icon and go down the list until you see "format". Click on this and then go down to "Quick format" and put in a check mark. Click on "Start", now down and click on OK. When format complete comes up, click on OK. On mine a couple icons were still there so I simply highlighted them and pressed delete. Now I have a normal flash drive without all the U3 stuff that I don't need.

Removal instructions Can I remove U3 technology from my USB drive? Yes. To remove the U3 technology from the drive, simply go to the U3 Launchpad and, under Settings, select U3 Launchpad settings and click Uninstall. This will completely remove the U3 Launchpad from the drive.

Can I restore U3 technology after removing it?
Yes. SanDiskÂs U3 website features a U3 Launchpad Installer utility that you can use to re-install the U3 Launchpad on the Cruzer smart drive.

Just guessing - Sounds like it wants all attached usb removable storage drives unplugged excpt the one U3 Sandisk.

Do you also have a portable usb hard drive maybe ? Maybe a usb floppy or usb CD. Usb camara card reader ?

I have had at least one usb camera show up with a drive letter assignment too.

mikie you may be 100% right as I have other things plugged into USB ports such as a cam and wireless keyboard & mouse so I am going to let well enough alone.

My Sandisk Mini Cruzer I bought in 2004 to transfer files from my windows 98 to my XP computer worked FINE!

My question is:::::: Why won't it work on my friend's windows 98 computer?????
It said something about not locating a driver?

Does a person have to DL a driver every time they use it in somebody elses computer?

I gave up on that new one I bought.(Cruzer Micro)Hopeless.

I have an old 98 first edition desktop - installed sandisks 98SE driver to get the cruzer to work with it. If I remember right, it will work in the powered usb hub but not in one of the normal usb ports.

Yes Urlee, you need the driver on each computer you use the device on. The driver installs on the computer, not the device and even if you stored the driver on the device win 98 couldn't read it until the driver was on the computer. Shouldn't be a problem with windows xp, but usb not well supported in windows 98.
