Your idea of using 2 thumb drives makes perfect sense. Then you always have 2 backups up to the point of the older copy. Not too much would be lost. Kingston has a respected name so you are doing good there too. Flash drive, thumb drive, memory stick all similar. However I have 2 what I call thumb or flash drives which are a one piece thing you simply plug in a USB port. I also have one which has a removeable memory card the same as those used in digital cameras. This also uses the USB port of course, I am not sure if it has any advantages over the one piece drives. We'll see what others think on the matter hopefully.

It is a portable app, made to function that way. I posted a link in the original post here that explains what a portable app is. Much like using a linux live cd and running it from the cd/dvd drive. It is running in its own environment, not installing to the computer itself. The version of the app is designed to function that way. There are portable app versions for a lot of programs. Try google for portable apps you may be amazed. Using a portable app version of an antivirus program on an infected pc that you can not get to install or run the AV on the computer because the infection has disabled it, is a much often used tool. Which is why so many tech people carry a flash drive toolkit. Most of the tools you need can be put on a flash drive. One of the first things to happen have is a small linux distro capable of booting and running from your flash drive, with it you can gain access to the files in a borked windows pc and salvage them. I have only 4GB cards, but I did find this: SDHC cards use the same physical format as SD cards but cannot be used with SD host devices that do not comply with SDA Specifications Version 2.00. Current SD cards complying with Version 1.01 and Version 1.10 use either the FAT12 or FAT16 file system, whereas Version 2.00 uses FAT32. This incompatibility could explain your problem (FAT is File Allocation System). Now...I have to check the specs on the card slot on our laptops. I almost bought 8GB cards the other day.

Bigger question is are you looking for backups or to transfer the files around? If you want backups, how privacy conscious are you? If you don't care about sharing your videos, there are literally dozens of cloud services that can store or back up your videos, some for free, some for a fee. Many of the backup services can also back up any files on your computer, and make them available to pretty much any other computing device, OS etc... If you're privacy concerned, make sure you have multiple local copies of any files you want to back up. Flash drives are great for transfers, i.e. temporary storage while moving files around. They're not great for archival, they do tend to fail with no warning at all. So either have 3 or more copies on different flash drives, or use a different backup method. There are lots available, again at all different price points. In any case, you want multiple copies. Here's where DVD-Rs are useful - they are write once, so they can't be accidentally erased, they now are very cheap, so you could have 20 or more for the price of a 4GB flash drive, and if stored in a cool dark place, usually last at least a couple years. There are more expensive archival ones that claim to last 70 years, though I'd probably still check every few years if I really cared about the data, if only to migrate to current formats if necessary.
