Windows....Why can't I transfer these jpegs?

I've just spent a few days online with some great folks who have given me a clean bill of health from a horrible virus. Thank you Zep and RC!

I'm having a problem that I don't think is connected, but I can't figure out why I can't send some jpeg photos to a CD/DVD for safekeeping. I am able to send them to a regular CD, but when I select Start, My Computer, right click the origination drive and chose "Send to....D:" with a DVD/RW in that drive, I get the following message. "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do. Cancel or Retry."

I've tried 2 different DVR/RWs with the same results. I've never had a problem before.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Start>Run type Devmgmt.msc, that will open the device manger look for the funny yellow error things.

Will the dvd drive play a dvd?

Windows XP does not understand a DVD. You need an alternate program to burn those. I use DeepBurner but sadly it is no longer a free program.

You would have had a stripped down version of Roxio or other software when you got the computer or when you installed a DVD burner, open that and load your photos in.

Remember though even a CD can hold a very large number of photos depending on the file sizes of the images.

Very good suggestion DtD and Steve - I just sent an email to GW about a possible Gallery. "On the New England Gardening Forum, we have several recurring threads heavy with photos. Some of these have been posted regularly for years now, and we like to refer back to previous threads. It's getting more and more difficult to handle the reference links, and the earlier threads are getting perilously close to sliding off GardenWeb into oblivion. Is there some way we can post these earlier threads on a separate site (like a Gallery) so the photos and discussions are easily available even when they're a few years old? (the suggestion was initially made by steve_mass on a current thread). Another web place to host pictures is with your ISP. My ISP gives me free webspace as part of my account. Its not a ton of space and its not easy to see how much space is left with my ISP. Yours may vary. Uploading can be super easy. I had an FTP client built into my desktop (cuteFtp) that was integrated with Windows explorer such that I could right-click on the file and have an option to Upload to My webspace. (I had to pre-size by hand though.) Then when I upgraded my desktop, cuteFTP was no longer working and I never got around to figuring it out. I have other FTP clients I can use to move files there. Nearly as easy, but no right-click. Probably ISP webspace is not for the average user, but a potentially easy option for some.

DtD: I thought that I'd covered that in this section: "Desirable sizes are either "thumbnails" which some hosting sites provide, or something close to 640 X 480 pixels. "Medium" or "Small" varies from program to program, so don't rely on it. (see corunum/Jane's discussion in the previous thread)." I'll try to make it stronger in the next revision, probably using the 640 X 480 pixels size as a maximum (unless someone has a better suggestion). Of course, these are just recommendations, and people can't be forced to abide by them. I don't want to make the process onerous, I'd rather someone just get a photo posted for the first time even if it's really big, and then the next ones can be posted in a more suitable size. Once they're past that first hurdle of posting they can work on the details. Claire

dedtired - I know it sounds like a lot of files, but it really isn't when you count in all the files you get with the software programs like Windows OS, Office and Photoshop. Plus add on's and extentions. It recovered all the files on the hard drive, not just my personal ones. The fun part is that the names of the files were lost so I have to go through each and every one to decided what to keep. It will take me days or even weeks. Ugh! And they might be empty files or junk and corrupted files. Won't know till I open them. compumom, jessyf, triciae - Thanks for the recommendations. I will keep the ones suggested in mind. This one was the first one to actually find something. The others I tried before couldn't find anything at all. DH just bought a new 1 Terra Byte IOMEGA External hard drive 3.0 as a new backup. I am still going burn my PS files and photos onto DVDs as a third backup. Thanks for the replies. Clare

Hi zep,
Nope, no funny yellow error things. Actually, I've never tried to play a DVD before. :) When I put the DVD in the D: Drive (labeled hp dvd/cd writer combo)the light comes on momentarily but nothing comes up on the screen. Should it play it?

Well, that explains it. I have a question, though...Picasa has a Backup feature and I backed my pictures up from there on DVD/RW disks. Now I'm wondering if it really did?

After taking a few minutes to look at the feature again on Picasa, I tried a small backup and chose to "show" the photos after the burn, nothing happened. Nada. I'm glad I posted this tonight and that you answered. I was feeling smug that I had backed up all my photos on DVD and there is probably nothing on the disk? They are huge files so I guess I'll just back them up on the external HD and Flickr.

Pam do you in fact have a DVD burner installed or only a CD burner? Look at the front of the tower and it will be visible on the CD or DVD player. If you have a DVD then there should be software.

However I will caution that using a DVD for photos is daunting when you need to find a photo - unless you are far more tidy minded than I am, and that would not be difficult when it comes to sorting my photos. Taking a 1 meg photo as an example you would get close to 800 on a CD.

Using a 10 megapixel camera at it's highest setting creates an image around the 3 megapixel mark so you can still expect to save close to 260 photos per CD.

I have no knowledge of Picassa or anyone space oriented photo saving site, I like my photos in my possession and under my control.

Hi owbist, I really do have a DVD/CD burner combo on my hp Pavilion. The drive "drawer" is labeled "hp dvd writer/cd writer combo" on the front of it. The drive "drawer" below it says cd rom.

I can almost guarantee you that I'm not more tidy minded than you. :) I use online storage (only a few are for public viewing), my ext hard drive and CDs for photo storage. Trying to cover the bases.

Thanks R-C for the links. I'll check them out and see if I'm brave enough. ;)
