Windows....Why can't I transfer these jpegs?

I've just spent a few days online with some great folks who have given me a clean bill of health from a horrible virus. Thank you Zep and RC!

I'm having a problem that I don't think is connected, but I can't figure out why I can't send some jpeg photos to a CD/DVD for safekeeping. I am able to send them to a regular CD, but when I select Start, My Computer, right click the origination drive and chose "Send to....D:" with a DVD/RW in that drive, I get the following message. "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do. Cancel or Retry."

I've tried 2 different DVR/RWs with the same results. I've never had a problem before.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Start>Run type Devmgmt.msc, that will open the device manger look for the funny yellow error things.

Will the dvd drive play a dvd?

Windows XP does not understand a DVD. You need an alternate program to burn those. I use DeepBurner but sadly it is no longer a free program.

You would have had a stripped down version of Roxio or other software when you got the computer or when you installed a DVD burner, open that and load your photos in.

Remember though even a CD can hold a very large number of photos depending on the file sizes of the images.

turns out there is an application that you download and it automatically places pics in My photos and photobucket pics them up in seconds..so it was easily done. :) Yes I could have gotten a memory chip for my phone but you still have to stop and put the pic into that chip...at least it doesn't do it automatically on this phone. So be sure that the chip phone you get does it auto. I am glad I figured out a way to do mine very easily. :)

That's an interesting observation, steve_mass; I suppose the aims of posting can be very different in other forums. In the Building a Home forum, people often want to be able to post a building plan with enough detail so they can read the dimensions (small text). It also may be their first post so Tiny Pic is often recommended by that forum as the easiest way to get photos online. In the New England forum a thread will often get long with photos posted by many people. One big photo will disrupt everything after it, making the whole thread difficult to read. Close detail isn't necessary, even for plant identification since the ID is likely to be more a case of identifying a species, not a specific cultivar (hostas can be very similar). Picasa is very popular here in New England, possibly because of the enthusiastic support of some of the regulars (as well as its many fine features before I get flamed). Including a pic in the message is the gold standard, but this is a pretty relaxed forum and I think people would rather see a link in the box than not see a pic at all. Claire

It looks great but I caution you against 6 skinny posts. Porch posts should not be closer together than the height of the posts. 5 posts would only work if you got rid of the useless front door. 4 posts would be good too but I would make them at least 6" square (not round). That even aligns better with the front door than what the designer drew which would be obvious if the designer hadn't moved the door over in the computer model. (I wouldn't be moving useless doors if I had a tight budget.) It also allows wider front steps. Front steps should always be wide and welcoming with room for a plant or two. If the center dormer is made wider perhaps the roof of it could continue down to the main roof forming a gable-front dormer. Not much more expensive (maybe less expensive) but possibly a lot more elegant.

Do I understand that you have double pane windows now that "have lost their seal?" If this is the case, I would try to find out why? Have no idea where you live and am only aware of the Simonton brand which runs between wonderful and awful on other posts on this board. We happen to have 10 year old PlyGem windows that look as good as the time they were installed. Our house is so tight that we have to open a couple of windows to let in fresh air.

Nope, no funny yellow error things. Actually, I've never tried to play a DVD before. :) When I put the DVD in the D: Drive (labeled hp dvd/cd writer combo)the light comes on momentarily but nothing comes up on the screen. Should it play it?

Well, that explains it. I have a question, though...Picasa has a Backup feature and I backed my pictures up from there on DVD/RW disks. Now I'm wondering if it really did?

After taking a few minutes to look at the feature again on Picasa, I tried a small backup and chose to "show" the photos after the burn, nothing happened. Nada. I'm glad I posted this tonight and that you answered. I was feeling smug that I had backed up all my photos on DVD and there is probably nothing on the disk? They are huge files so I guess I'll just back them up on the external HD and Flickr.

Pam do you in fact have a DVD burner installed or only a CD burner? Look at the front of the tower and it will be visible on the CD or DVD player. If you have a DVD then there should be software.

However I will caution that using a DVD for photos is daunting when you need to find a photo - unless you are far more tidy minded than I am, and that would not be difficult when it comes to sorting my photos. Taking a 1 meg photo as an example you would get close to 800 on a CD.

Using a 10 megapixel camera at it's highest setting creates an image around the 3 megapixel mark so you can still expect to save close to 260 photos per CD.

I have no knowledge of Picassa or anyone space oriented photo saving site, I like my photos in my possession and under my control.

Hi owbist, I really do have a DVD/CD burner combo on my hp Pavilion. The drive "drawer" is labeled "hp dvd writer/cd writer combo" on the front of it. The drive "drawer" below it says cd rom.

I can almost guarantee you that I'm not more tidy minded than you. :) I use online storage (only a few are for public viewing), my ext hard drive and CDs for photo storage. Trying to cover the bases.
