I'm grateful she has good doctors and that this surgery exists. We do indeed live in an age of miracles, don't we?

CC, just saw this. Reaching out and grabbing your hand (and giving a big hug). I have little Saoirse and the entire family and medical staff in my prayers. Little kids are amazing and I'm sure she will be just fine. But, I sure understand your concern and fears. I have a GS the same age as Saoirse. They are so tiny to be going through so much.

Surgery is over, and everything went well. No problems anticipated in the recovery room, but I guess I won't feel completely confident until later today. We are all very relieved and thankful.
As for the future, we have to wait and see. We knew the operation would not be a total fix. We just have to see what happens as Saoirse grows. There will be lots of follow-up.
I'm glad the surgical care is so family-centered. They send a nurse out periodically, just before and during the surgery, to tell the parents how the child is doing.

I love to see the result of answered prayers posted and I will continue to keep little Saoirse and your family in my prayers.

I'm happy to hear that the surgery went well and that Saoirse is recovering.

I'll continue to hold her in my thoughts and prayers for recovery.

How is she doing, CC?

Pam, she is fine, but tomorrow is the part that will be hardest on her. I am more upset, though of course less worried, about this than about the surgery itself.
She has to be fitted with a helmet that she must wear 23 hours a day. It is very tight, and they've been warned to expect that she will be "fussy." I am afraid that may be the equivalent of "you're going to experience a little discomfort" just before you go through the ceiling.

Oh dear. I will be praying hard that Saoirse will have as little discomfort as is possible.

Oh that does sound difficult especially because she is so little. However, I bet she adjusts to it rather quickly, kind of the way kids do to braces on their teeth. Babies are resilient little beings. Not true of their parents and grandparents.

Oh dear, CC, I do hope Saoirse is doing well and will be more comfortable than you fear. It's hard when they are so small, they can't tell you how they really feel.

Poor little thing! Cover her with extra kisses to make up for the discomfort, that shouldn't be too difficult! LOL!

How long will Saoirse have to wear the helmet? I hope it doesn't frighten her. I know it's got to break your heart.

The doctors think she can be out of the helmet before she is a year old.

The neurosurgeon is very pleased with the result, and said her parents can keep her in it a while longer if they want to get closer to a perfect head shape, but as far as he is concerned she is where she needs to be. While S. did adjust very well, my daughter noticed that she seemed happier, with bigger smiles and more of them, in the short periods without it. There was also some concern about the way it cut off a lot of her field of vision.
So they decided she is all done with it. Really she looks just fine, and when she has more hair any asymmetry will be invisible, we think.
We just had the pleasure of having them visit us, and Saoirse was crawling around and just starting to stand, enjoying life like any other 8-month-old baby.

CC, I am so glad to read this! Good job little "S". You did real good. Modern medicine does such amazing things today that even just a few years ago sounded like Sci-fi.

I'm going to keep that thought as I head off to the neurologist this afternoon myself...

This is very good news, a big relief for all of you. I wish I had remembered to ask how she was doing. So happy this is all over. Enjoy your little grandbaby!
