I thought that if I could go online, I could email the files to myself, and open them on my new computer. But I can't go online, since my dsl modem and my wireless usb internet connection thing won't work on the old computer. So I also can't download any of the cd burning software. My cd drive that's built in to the computer says "compact disc" on the front, not cd-rw or anything that makes me think it will make a cd. I do have two usb ports on the back of the computer, so I stuck in a flash drive. Nothing about it showed on the screen, so I clicked on Control Panel and Add New Hardware. It showed Disk 2.0 which I guessed is the flash drive. I tried following the steps to install it and now it says the "device is installed, but it has a problem". It says there is no driver. I had never tried to use a flash drive on it before. I haven't used the computer since 2005. Is there a way to make the flash drive work without going online to download a driver? I'll try to figure out if there's windows media player software already on the computer and try to use the dvd/cd burner that way. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Most programs have idiosyncrasies. The features you hate are the ones others love and vice-versa. Sometimes the choice is a compromise or the pick of the lesser of evils. I agree with the others, there are loads of free alternatives to the Windows offerings. Try 'em, you'll find one or more you'll like better. But as with any MS supplied component, leave it alone. You can associate file types with any new program(s) you prefer and you'll never see the old stuff you don't like again.

(On your computer) You can check the status of any hardware installation in Device Manager. To check the status of your device Open Device Manager. If your device is not listed in Device Manager, it is not recognized by your computer. You need to install a new device driver manually. To install a driver manually Close any open programs. Start the Add Hardware Wizard. Click Next, and wait for Windows to search for Plug and Play hardware. Most newer hardware is Plug and Play, so you will rarely need to go beyond this step. If no Plug and Play hardware is found, a list of hardware types appears. Click Add a new hardware device, and then click Next. Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list, and then click Next. In the Common hardware types list, click the appropriate hardware category, and then click Next. In the Manufacturers list, click the manufacturer of your hardware, and then in the Models list, click the model name. Or, click Have Disk if you have an updated or third-party driver to install for your hardware. Click Next, and then follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
