Blank media...not sure what I should be buying, help?

Hi...I want to purchase some blank CDs but I am not sure what I want/need and what is available. I have an older laptop that is almost 5 yrs old with a CD player that records. We are planning on buying new laptops soon as well..maybe going over to Apple from Dell. We are planning on buying a DVD/VCR player that records in hopes of transferring home movies that are on VCR to DVD/CD? We do not have High Definition anything nor do we plan on getting it any time soon.

So basically I want to be able to play music CDs, burn music to CDs [or are DVDs better?], play DVD movies, perhaps record movies from the TV to a DVD? Is that possible?, Plus take old movies already recorded on VCR tapes and home movies on VCR tapes and transfer those to DVDs. I also want to back up files, music and photos from my computer to DVD or CD.

So do I need different media formats for these different uses? Are there CD/DVDs that can be used over and over again and erase what is on them then record on them again? Do some formats fit certain machines but not all? Which brand is better than others?

Geeeezzz...how did things get so complicated?! [g] If you don't have time to give me a tutorial on it...if you know of a website that explains it all..a link would be great too.

When you say you are changing from Apple to Dell, you are then changing the operating system to Mac as opposed to windows, so a conversation would need to take place with the apple sales men at best to see what best suites mac for dvd/cd ect, not being a user of Mac I could not direct you.
For windows if you Google "Dvd formats" that should get you moving in a forward direction. Also Google "VCR to DVD" transfer.

Be careful selecting the DVD/VCR recorder. For some reason there seems to be many models that burn only from DVD to VCR. That seems like going from the car back to horse and buggy again.

We purchased one perhaps 2 years ago and I burned VCR tapes to DVD. Once you get the hang of the procedure it goes along well. However it is one of those 'once in a lifetime' tasks and you soon forget how it was done. This recorder seems to prefer DVD-R but I never persevered with the DVD+R

With the price of blank DVD's so low I personally would not waste my time with re-recordable disks. A friend has some and claims they can be burned up to 1,000 times.

Athony, figs will not freez if you uncover them and also they won't grow eaither bcs it's still on cold side. Mine are under that see-through nylon and they are OK, Be carefull I heard we will get some snow in April. rrgg, I never know the difference between spelling Amerika and America that it is offensive, I never did think to offend someone or use slurs to anyone and particularly to my fellow gardeners. I do apologize if I offended anyone and I would suggest you take some vacation in Europe to learn and see a bit more. I strongly believe in knowing the names of all my hostas. Among other things, I record the grower/hybridizer, the year it was first introduced, and where and when I acquired it. I will not buy from any of the various home improvement stores, where labels often get switched around. That being said, every spring I end up with a dozen or so plants without labels. Obviously, the names of the NOIDS most be among the names of the hostas I acquired, and can easily be found. Most of these orphans result from dividing known hostas, when I forget to label the new divisions. Then there are those hostas, which are either sports, OP seedlings etc. and I record them just as well. If you feel it is to early to name them, identify them at least with some letters or numbers. By fall it is time to take pictures of all my hosta beds. I make B/W printouts and walk outside with the stack of paper in my hand and enter each name directly on the print out, or you might use 1 inch dia. Avery adhesive labels to white on. Use color prints if you don't mind the expense. If you are trying to identify plants from a friend, or those that came with house, try to estimate how many years they were with the last owner. That will reduce the number of possibilities drastically.

Well. I'm torn. In a different life, and before I knew I could learn to DIY so much, I bought 11 cabinets through Direct Buy from Norcroft. TWENTY SEVEN cabinets later, (I think it was 27) I finally got the cabinets I actually ordered. They could not get the dimensions right AT ALL, even though I was simply going 18" deep on most of them, vs. kitchen counter depth. I ordered unfinished maple and got everything but. It was also before I knew I lived for beaded inset, which they didn't offer at that time, anway. That said, they kept at it until it was right, and let me have all the mistakes since they'd just throw them away. I've actually used every single one of them in some fashion, be it just the components, drawers, or doors and drawer fronts. I doubt you'd recognize any of them. The single BAD functional thing for me, is their top drawer in base cabinets is extremely shallow. 2.5" deep. I would never pay for a drawer that shallow ever again. 3" would be my minimum, which is what I have in some reused Quakermade cabinets. It's deep enough. So I can say as long as they're the plywood construction grade (vs. particle board, which they offer,) sure. Just know what you're getting and why. They also seem to have "specials" so ask.

Austin, you are one of the few guys who seem to be fair. Unfortunately the vast majority of HVAC companies I have encountered are not. I run two businesses and in neither of my business ventures do I get to charge a 500% + mark up on my services. I have overhead just like any other business. Rent I pay for my office and warehouse, insurance, employees, fuel, maintenance etc etc. The system I cited specifically in this thread, my cost $3248.00 installation included versus the 13k to 17k I was quoted with out even looking at the property in question. The Techs that work for me do the manual labor lifting, brazing, putting on mastic and crap like that. All the electrical and gas connections I do myself so I know it was done properly. I have done this for well over 20 years. I know what I am doing, but I don't call myself a PRO. I do it because it benefits me greatly. Do I run into problems that stump me, sure. That is when I call my guys. "Just to be clear anyone with a driver's license and $20 can become a 'AC tech' in Texas. " Yea, I have seen some techs, I would not let some of them work on my lawn mower much less let them into my properties. The guys I use are good quality men. I just did not choose them at random. In fact one of them approached me and he has been a great asset to me for over 10 years. I pay my guys well and they do good quality work. If the property burns down because of brazing or any other reason that's why they are insured, we will just prey no one dies and property damage is the only casualty. There is not much argument anyone can give me as to why I should spend 13k vs 3k for the same exact thing and chances are they were quoting the "cheap stuff". I realize not everyone can or even wants to do what I do. I don't particularly care for hanging out in attics, crawling around on rafters when it feels like 130 F up there. At the end of the day when I am successful, I fell pretty good about fixing it and the fact I kept my money in my pocket.

I lucked out on buying the Pioneer 640 DVR stand alone with a hard drive which you can have record TV shows to the hard drive allowing you to edit out the commercials if you want to burn to disk to save.
I transferred all my VHS tapes into the DVR to edit and burn to DVD's.
I LOVED that machine so much, I bought a second one for my bedroom when I heard that was the last of Pioneer making them.
I buy Verbatim hub printable and Taiyo Yuden Watershield printable DVD-R because my Epson printer allows me to print directly onto the DVD's. I LOVE it!
Most people prefer Verbatim & TY's.

owbist....Not sure I am following you. Is the DVD-R the one that records things permanently and the DVD+R the one that can be repeatedly recorded over? When you say you didn't perservere with the DVD+R, was there something more difficult about using it? Were you recommending to buy the DVD-R because they are cheaper?

urlee....first of all, thank you so much for that link. I did not have a good website to go to with audio/visual questions and that looks like a good one. Not sure how you managed to copy/paste the 'visual' directions for where I needed to go, but it is sure impressive! No, I don't need directions on how to do it, because I am probably never going to do that myself, but amazed that someone can...lol.

I did a google search on Pioneer 640 and found references to 'not available' any more as you state. That is too bad. Do you know if there is another comparable Recorder on the market? Right now I am renting a Box from Comcast that records TV programs and I have just loved it since I have gotten it. It is so easy to use and fairly reliable. The problem is that you are not 'saving' anything permanently and you can't take anything on the box off and transfer to dvd. Obviously I can't use it to transfer home movies to dvd either.

That is a long thread on the Pioneer 640, if I read the whole thing will it answer the question about whether I can actually buy one or will it point me in the direction of a substitute for it?

I am just not a person who understands Audio/Visual very well. I can manage most of the time to connect and learn to operate a new piece of equipment by just following along with a manual, but connecting all the equipment and getting it all to do what you want it to do together...well, it is just very intimidating. It is like learning a whole new language and I just don't have the interest, time or energy to do it. If I knew someone who was proficient in it, I would be asking them to come and just set it all up for me and cooking them dinner...lol. But alas, I don't.

I could very easily and quickly get to the point where I will throw up my hands and just take the vcr home movies to Ritz camera and spend $30 per vcr tape to have them do the transfer for me. So what I am looking for is easy and simple. That is why I love my comcast box, it was easy to rent it, they installed it and all I have to know is how to work the remote and set up the recording schedule etc. That I can handle.

Maybe I should find an Audio/Visual school to send one of my kids to? [g]

U R welcome. I think if you poke around on that site, you may find valuable info pertaining to Video recording that may help in many ways.
Sorry I can't answer your question of what would be as good as the pioneer 640 but there has been another Pioneer mentioned on the last page of that thread but if it is for the USA or Canada?
All I know is that what I got made me a mighty happy camper. Having a Hard drive is the best thing invented for many reasons. One of which you never have to worry about running out of "tape" as you would on the VHS tape recorders. I recorded Dr. Zhivago in one sweep using the SP speed. (over 3 hours) I can burn to double layer DVD's.
Another is, you never have to buy "tapes" and only if you want to save a movie, you have to buy a disc to burn it on.
Otherwise you record to the hard drive, watch it, then erase it. (delete)
