I would suggest your easiest way out would be to back up all your personal data, gather up the CDs for the other programs then restore the computer to the original factory defaults. This would remove all rubbish and possibly corrupt files and you would be starting out all squeaky clean again.

This is a task many of us shy away from yet it can be the most beneficial way to cure problems and give the machine a spring clean.

SFC /ScanNow
can fix lots of things if you are able to run it.

Otherwise think I would download xp's sp2 for IT Poorfessionals, which is 300mb or so download, and reinstll it. Follow the instructions! Which probably tell you mainly to turn off virus protection and maybe firewall.
It contains both ie6 and OE too. There's a high probability it won't install oe6 if it thinks you already have ie7 but it should repair/reinstall any bad files and configurations you may have.
After installing it you should visit update.microsoft.com

Mikie, I googled SFC /ScanNow and read page after page of related links. They get into a range that is much too technical for me. For now I think I just have to leave well enough alone. I'm very disappointed though that I can't get screen shots of the animals like I could before IE7 intruded itself onto my PC.

At the time you followed the link to Djuma, the cameras were not rolling. They do two drives each day, one around noon, our time, and the other around midnight, our time.

I would appreciate it very much if you would try this link at one of those times, do a screen shot and post it here. And if anyone is still using IE6, I would like for them to do the same.

I still just want to know it can be done.

I am watching at Djuma right now and there is a huge beautiful male lion, resting right in the road. Earlier there were Rhinos, Impala, Waterbucks and Wildebeests.

Sue I will post a link to a very good easy tutorial for scannow. This is something that is already on your computer, you simply need to hit start then the run box and type in the command which is sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and / but no space between /scannow so sfc /scannow)
that will run the scan, if it finds problems with corrupt files it will fix them. You may have to make sure your pc is set to show the hidden files and that is easy.
Go to My Computer>tools>folder options>View> then "uncheck" hide protected operating system files.

That allows it to find those files. You can go back later and re-check it if you wish.

IF you have windows auto updates turned on it will continue to download and install IE7, you must go to the windows update page and select custom, then un check the IE7 install update and tell it NOT to show this update.

the other option is trying firefox or opera browsers have you tried them? I use and love firefox.

Mikie, thanks for checking that out. "Embed in page" is over my head, but I can work on that sometime if I ever get back to where I was. I take it you were using IE7?

Ravencajun, I will try the scannow link tomorrow. Wish me luck! I checked just now for Windows updates and there are no new ones, so the choice of express or custom doesn't show. Is there another way to get to it?

I use Firefox; it is my default browser. I used IE for the Djuma site because FF wanted a plugin for Windows Media player, so I just stayed with IE until this problem. I did go back and update WMP with FF, and PrintScreen doesn't work there now either.

I tried the scannow and got to the part that says to put in the Professional CD. My PC is Media Center, not Professional, and it did not come with a CD. So that ended that attempt. Thanks for the help though.

Sue_VA, I had IE-7 on my computer for a day and couldn't stand it. Found it in add/remove files and deleted. Good old IE6 came back good as always. And I haven't had any nagging Update notices. Sandy

that link actually tells you how to get around if it ask for the cd, if you have the i386 folder on your pc which I bet you do. But if you do not want to do that I understand.

I think I would try one more time going to add/remove and delete IE7 then go to your automatic updates area in control panel and set it to tell you when you have new updates instead of just installing them. Then next time it shows you that you have new updates, go to the actual windows update webpage (start>windows update at the top) then select custom and it will show you each of the updates, one will likely be for install of IE7 if it is uncheck that update and put a check for it to not show that update in the future. Then go ahead and do your updates.
When it is set to do automatic updates by just automatically downloading and installing them you have no way to stop it from putting IE7 back on.
