Hesitation in mouse and keyboard

Is there something I can do to speed up my mouse and keyboard. It is a new (6 month old) HP PC with Windows 7, wired mouse and keyboard. Just recently when I am playing games that require clicking with the mouse... the click doesn't show up for a second or so, the same with the keyboard. I'll type something and there's a hesitation part of the time. There will be a few moments where what I'm typing doesn't show up and then it will. It's as if the computer can't keep up.. and I am a slow typist. Hope that makes sense.

It's a recent problem, didn't do it until a couple weeks ago, everything seems to be connected fine. What's with the slowdown?

does a reboot seem to improve it for even a bit?

have you gone into the mouse settings area in windows and selected to speed up the mouse cursor and movements?

What else is running when you see this happening? Can you run the task manager and watch the CPU and memory usage when this happens? I've seen this happen when memory or (more often) CPU usage spikes. You may have a program that is chewing up resources.

I used to have that happen it would not recognize it till I unplugged then re-plugged the keyboard then it would find it and work, luckily I have a KVM switch on my desktop so it was easy to get to do do this, I love a wireless mouse but just can not get a good wireless keyboard that I find worth the effort so I use a wired one with virtually no problems, I mean it is on my desktop just how far will I be going with it anyway. Also make sure the receiver is not blocked or out of line from the unit.

I googled this stuff too - and googled removing or cleaning it - no results except to purchase it. I think I'll have to call the company on Monday and see if they have any ideas. I like the idea of the heating pad - but I should probably find out what heat does to this. I've always hated these slimy, gooey toys - they often stain - but this seems ridiculous. To have the thinned sections harden like that. Kudzu- The explanation was that my daughter had a friend over yesterday and they were playing with the goo. They were in my husband's den - which my 10yo daughter seemed surprised to hear today that it was off limits to her and her friends. It's filled with guitars and recording equipment (it's always been off limits unless she's in there with her father). She and her friend were just in there - and decided to stop playing with the stuff - so they just put it down on the desk - on the keyboard and mouse - never occurred to them that was a problem. We're trapped on our block in a historic storm of 26" at the bottom of a hill. The public schools are open tomorrow - yet neighborhoods remain snowed in. I am just so incredulous about that - that my daughter blithingly going in a den that's off limits - with goo - and innocently leaving it on the keyboard as though that's a sufficient place to leave it - seems equally baffling. Did the topsy-turvyness of the snow storm effect their thinking? perhaps. Her friends father decided to drive her here (down a 2 block hill of snow) in a 4-wheel drive vehicle. He walked her here and told he he'd gotten stuck at the top of the hill. we just learned he'd been stuck just around the corner - 3 houses away - too embarrassed to tell us he'd ventured down the hill. Unbeknownst to us our neighbors spent an hour helping him dig out. If I find anything out about the goo, I'll post back. Thanks. Lynn.

Love my AWN432 as for the delicate cycle, it does mostly soak, but that's ok with me,,I have found thru the years soaking can do a good job cleaning, the whole point to delicate cycle besides slower agitation is to wash as gently as possible, soakimg is a very gentle form of cleaning. If possiable increase water temperature and use a good detergent to help make up for lack of mechanical action. Also decide if the garments really need gentle, I know people here that wash very pricey work out clothes that the manufactor recommends gentle wash cool water..yet they get washed in very hot on normal cycle with great results. As for the king size sheet set, those should fit fine, as Maylingsmom said hit the reset to add more water. When I bought my SQ 3 weeks ago it filled to the top row of holes, for some reason it doesn't anymore, very strange, but I hold reset it doesn't take long. I know you can't load and go this way but there is no other washer that will come as close to your older maytag as the SQ.

BPG is more than likely on to something. Historically a concern as yours is being caused by resource activity. Have you installed anything new or reconfigured existing applications?

An easy and safe way to determine what is running in the background is an installation of WinPatrol. If you do, the focus is on the Startup Programs and the Services tabs.

To avoid an unnecessary worry, when you activate WP from the Start Menu or Desktop it will be loaded onto the Notification Area (by the clock). Then click on it there.

A reboot did help. I don't think I've installed anything new, although a picture viewer was open during the recent problems.

If it does it again I will try your other suggestions. Thanks so much!

that reboot would have re-allocated resources and likely left only the minimal running so it could very well be something that is being resource hungry. Next time it does it definitely check the task manager to see what is using the most resources.

Since this is a new pc with windows 7 I would assume it has a good amount of RAM and a decent size processor so would not really expect something like that.

I have the same problem, recently. I notice it at night. Plus pages load slowly, strangely. Pages open in pieces, sections and take time. Checked resources last night and CPU was running at 100%. Would fluctuate between 90-100%. I looked in
TM and stopped a bunch of HP processes (printer) but it made no difference. Looked like Firefox was the resource hog. Downloaded the new FF 4 to see if any better.
Keyboard and mouse problem didn't improve.

FF 4 didn't make any difference. Doesn't happen during the day.

CPU usage at 100% would be a huge concern for me Jane. Were you running a scan at the time? If not, I would immediately update MalwareBytes and run a thorough scan. Even with multiple apps running (like 8) and several browser sessions and Outlook, my CPU usage hovers around 39% on my work computer. My home computer really never gets worked like that and stays really low like 3 to 10%.

    Sorry to hijack Lydia :-)

Jane try running firefox in firefox safe mode and see if the useage changes in your Task Manager, if so then it is one of your add ons. I recently posted here about which add ons are the worst for slowing down firefox.
To do firefox safe mode go to start> programs> mozilla> there will be an option for firefox safe mode.

CPU running at 100% will do that type of stuff. Keep checking when this happens to see exactly what is using the most resources. do you by any chance have scans that would run at those times?

    last modified: 10 years ago

No scans run at night automatically. I downloaded the new FF4 and can't find my add-ons. I know I disabled a bunch last night (thanks Raven for your post), but didn't make any difference although I didn't disable AdBlock or AdBlock Plus?
I do use Xmarks but that shouldn't do anything.

I ran MB and SAS and nothing found. Computer runs fine during the day, this only happens at night (after 9pm).

I don't want to hijack Lydia's post, but we are having similar problems.

One other thing, I noticed when I shut down last night, I got a error message about reference memory...I didn't get time to copy it as it just flashed, got a error sound and it shut down.

Several days ago I noticed CPU usage @ 100%, and when I opened Task Manager, I saw that True Image (Acronis) was running. This was because I had scheduled a backup the first Monday of each month. My external drive was not connected, and there was nothing in the taskbar to indicate that Acronis was running. I would have thought that something would have showed up in the notification area to tell me this. So there's one possibility, and I guess other apps or programs could do the same. Check Task Manager and see what is using your resources.

Same thing going on tonight. I stopped all processes I recogonize but cpu is jumping from 13% to 100% back and forth. Mouse is jumpy and pages load very slow. No problem during the day.

What I see is svchose.exe going from 0 to 56%. Vsmon.exe also going up and down.

I don't know what those things are.

When I came home tonight and logged on, I got a crash message: 'Utility EXE Module has encountered a problem and needs to close. Error: signature ati2evxx.exe szappver 6.14.10.4222.'

I googled that and it said it has something to do with display drivers. I notice the CPU is at 100% now and I only have FF open.

Since this is a new pc with windows 7 I would assume it has a good amount of RAM and a decent size processor so would not really expect something like that.

I wouldn't expect that on a 486/20. There's something sucking up system resources. I'd suspect something running in the background trying to update itself or there's a corruption somewhere an a process using resources and not giving them back.

Vsmon.exe is a core module for Zone Alarm.

Are you sure it is svchose.exe and not svchost.exe? Double check please.

If it is svchost the link below may help, but still Google it as this link is dated.

If it is svchose.exe you better Google it too as this may not be pretty. Some of the offered listings are dated also.

I agree please check your spelling on that item if it is indeed svchose.exe we have a problem, that is generally associated with a very nasty back door trojan that takes over the pc and connects it to their servers to do who knows what using your pc.

Have you run an UPDATED malwarebytes full scan? Run an online scan too

Great, another headache! I'm at work and will check the spelling tonight, when I get home.

It is Win XP Pro sp3

For anyone who remembers, that machine was the one I had to reinstall Windows after it got corrupted. All was well until this week. The problem only occurs at night.

I'll write back after checking the spelling.

    Thanks so much,

    Here's a screen shot, don't know if its readable.It does say svchost.exe

Sorry to omit that part. I just came home and it started doing it immediately. Very jumpy and slow loading. Maybe something is wrong with this computer again.

I don't know if this says anything

This shot is from now when I first logged on. You can see all the HP start-up junk from the wireless printer. I always shut those off if I'm not printing.

I can't tell what is using all the resources. Doesn't look like anything is.

Also, sort by the CPU column so the processes chewing up CPU will be at the top.

Okay, see if I did this right. It takes so long to deal with pictures because the computer is so slow.

Took shot of 95% and 0% which is what it does. It jumps back and forth. Took these shots within a second of each other.

How many tabs are open in FIREFOX? 204,020K is a lot of memory!

Post a hijackthis log when you get a min.

    See link

    Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop. Right click the Hijackthis Icon and Run as Adminstrator if you use Vista or Windows 7
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log into your next post.
DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

Click the link, when the box open choose Save file, save it to the desktop once there double click and follow above instructions.

Zep the last two shots were taken with only GW open on FF. The shot taken last night FF was not open. Nothing open yet it showed CPU at 100%. Doesn't seem to be a browser issue.

I run all my scans regularly and nothing is ever found. I'll download hijack.

I notice a lot of Internet Explorer. I never use it. Only Firefox. I rarely use MS OFfice as it doesn't work right. I was surprised to see something about Excel. I have Messenger disabled in Services. This computer is wireless using a Netgear wireless adapter.

Unfortunately, when you did the screenshot where CPU is at 100%, the scrollbar is at the bottom, showing us only the processes that DON'T take much CPU.

Please let us see what is taking up CPU rather than showing us what is not taking up CPU.

I don't see anything outstanding in the log except the usual few unnecessary start ups.. Hard problem to isolate especially if only happens like you said at nite.

We can clean up the log a bit and shut down the unnecessary start ups (04) entries.

Close all browser windows, only have Hijackthis open, do a system scan only. Place a check mark in the following entries in bold:
