Is this a good thing(IE8), or not?

I keep auto updates off for this very reason. I check for updates manually. I used a tool to hide IE 7, but I noticed it's in the non critical updates now.

I think ie8 is great .. but it sure did give me install problems. Had to uninstall all the spyware protection that wrote blocks to registry&browser like S&D immuninize items and blocks I had written to do away with advertisements. Those advertising blocks for me were easy to stick in Avast. Don't need the immuninize stuff anymore.

Mikie, you sound like you are very knowledgeable about computers, so it would be easy for you. I didn't understand most of what you said. LOL I will stick with IE 6 it works for me.

I'm still using IE6 too. If it gave Mikie install problems I'd hate to think what it would do to me. I'll wait a while.

You supposedly can make yourself a restore point, then go into internet options and on the Advanced tab reset everything to defaults with the one button.. and then set IE security back to defaults with one button.

I installed it about three or four times the first day or two it was out in final release trying to figure out what was the problem here before people started discovering the immuninize type things were conflicting. Think my only problem was those url blockers mainly listed in Security and Privacy sites.

Some seem to have problems if Hosts file has lots of site blocking too.

Geez Feran if you are indeed working with the IE Outreach Team you would think your response would include live clickable links. It is not rocket science and we have a number of learners on this site who would appreciate the ability to simply click rather than have to cut and paste each one.

Other than the provided Optional Link I traditionally do not put hot links in my posts. My feeling is if someone wants to review the information they can have the fortitude to cut and paste it themselves. Perhaps others feel the same way or do so for altenate reasons. Finally, any member can tag a malicious link through the Optional Link source without any of us knowing it until it is too late so let's be alert , but not worry about something like this too much. The sky is not falling.

My advise is to evaluate each and any post with an un-tagged link, and make your decision whether to use based on its poster and/or its merits.

Whether this individual is legit, who knows?

DA, that's exactly what I did. Feran just signed on to GW the same day as the post. No credibility that I know of, and I decided to err on the side of caution.

I feel its my resposibility to keep my own little patch of sky from falling as best I can.

He came in because I linked directly to the IE8 Team blog and it leaves a trail to the site it is linked to, so he simply came here to give some added info. Many forums will create hotlinks simply by typing in the address, since this was his first time here and he was coming only to give some added info I doubt he had any idea that links had to be in html format, and of course anyone can simply utilize the url using cut and paste.

I appreciate the effort made to come and give us the info.

Out of curiosity I clicked on Owbist's first link, downloaded and installed IE8. I only use IE for windows updates so haven't changed any settings and maybe that's why it installed without a hitch for me. I'll give it a look, but do most of my browsing in Ubuntu so I won't use it much.

I am always concerned for the under-informed member. All too often their lack of knowledge creates a needless uncomfortable situation on their part.
I hope when you look up your sky is always blue. If you continue as you described undoubtedly it will be. :)

I talked to a young man last week was very excited about IE8 and advised me to read up on it. I respect his opinion, but I only use IE to update. I never find a site that won't work with Firefox.

stargazzer I also only use it to update but the reason they do new versions is because there are security updates in each new version there fore using the newer versions you are using the more secure updated version, after some point in time they will discontinue doing updates for the older versions. IF you have a program on the pc having the latest most updated version is usually best for those reasons.

Would there be a problem jumping from IE6 to IE8? I have kept the critical updates current. Thanks.

We have been advised in here to be cautious of some of the new updates, like IE7. How do we know which to trust?

the very best way is to do exactly what you are doing and ask, that way you can get replies from those who have tried it and like it also if there were any problems or glitches, you can also check other support forums for problems listed with a specific update. I do that prior to doing any of my windows updates, I check the forums for comments and if there are problems I wait till I know they have been resolved.
As far as IE8 goes there are some conflict problems with certain programs which is why it is a very good idea to read up on it and if you are running those programs be prepared prior to install.
I go to google and google IE8 Conflicts and find a wealth of info.

Since every system is different there never is a guarantee that any one program will work the same way it does on any other system, so we do have to take chances sometimes and just dive in with fingers crossed.

thanks raven, I do a lot of research, but didn't think of doing the conflict thing. I don't have a lot of problems with my PC. In spite of the safety issue, I think I will stay with IE 6.
