XP SP3 Available On AutoUpdate

For those, like me, who are not on MS AutoUpdate, go get XP SP3, it is now available. And, plan to turn your computer over to the update for at least 15 minutes.

If you also have Registry protection on, e.g., Spybot, you'll need to be on hand to approve updates to the Registry. One reason I have my MS Update on manual.

Hope SP3 works, so for so good....

IF you have not been reading the thread on here about xp sp3 please do before you try to get sp3. IT is causing major problems on many comptuers. There is no rush to get sp3 and I personally would wait a while especially since the update centers are swamped right now.

Sp3 is not being pushed out in auto updates yet, if you have it set to notify you of updates it will show up there and let you choose to add it but they are not yet pushing it on through for those with it set to auto update.

PLEASE READ up well before attempting to do this update.

READ the info on which version of IE you are using, if you have IE7 installed it is advised to uninstall it prior to installing sp3.

If you install sp3 and it messes up do NOT use system restore.

Hum, interesting I did find the past extensive thread on SP3 after posting my installation experience.

So far, so good. I installed on two computers: Gateway notebook and Dell Desk Top. Both seem to be working fine. I use Firefox, not IE7, but of course IE7 is used to interface with Microsoft.

I was looking forward, and please to say the least, that MS was (has) produced SP3. I have no interest in going to Vista, and SP3 strongly suggests ongoing support for XP.

I was tempted to load the "Beta" version, but decided to wait for the official release, so I "jumped" righ on it.

When evaluating software or hardware, it makes sense to ignore the popular press, especially the tech blogs and to an extent, consumer opinion. Change is difficult for us humans and the early reviews of XP bear it out. Below is a snapshot of cnet's Windows XP review back in 2001. I got to this page using the web archive. Note that cnet bemoans the fact that a user can only load XP on one computer. Really cnet? And note user opinions: 48% disliked XP after its first several months. Microsoft was roundly criticized for not having an OS that would work across all platforms: computer, tablet and mobile phone. Now Win 8 is negatively reviewed for not having a start button. Anyone remember when the criticism was that Windows had a start button? I use Win7 home premium on this computer and Win7 Pro on my daytrading rig. The next computer I buy will have Windows 8. nope I am all current on windows updates except for sp3 and since what it does is mostly give you all the windows updates since sp2 I doubt I will add it. The minor core changes it makes are of no interest to me. IF at any point in time they make it a mandatory update to get further windows udpates I may add it but it is doubtful that will happen. If it were a major security update I would do it. That is a decision each person needs to make on their own once they have weighed the pros and cons.

I have dial-up service and because of this, SP3 came into my computer during several sessions of being on-line. My copy of SP3 greatly fouled my computer. The installer stopped when near the end of the install and left a MESS. I tried to uninstall, but that did not work. I tried to use the 'file repair' option on my original Windows XP disc. It refused to do this - said that I was trying to load files from an older version to a newer one. LOL. Parts of my system barely worked. Much of it was trashed. A session with a MicroSoft IT person did not work (although he was very accomodating). I recovered by going to my favorite computer service & store and purchased an OEM disc of XP with SP3. This installed ok. (This fix cost me the purchase price of XP, but that was better than loosing all my old email files containing genealogical data.) After my computer was up and running with XP with SP3, I found that all the installed aoftware was no longer registered. All my applications had to be re-installed. I had to reinstall ThunderBird and all of its settings were lost. These had to be re-entered to get it working again. All the modem/internet connection settings had been lost. These had to be set up again. I was not happy, in fact, I was very preturbed before it was all over. Fortunatley, I did get back all my emails because I had a backup copy on an enternal hard drive. I have no idea what went wrong - I suppose the interrupted downloaded file had errors, or its installer was bad. Supposedly, this download was supposed to support interruptions.

Jerry, I am by no means an expert but I THINK the only problem you MAY encounter is IF you have a problem with IE 7 in the future... You won't be able to go back to IE 6 and you may not be able to fix IE 7 with out uninstalling it and SP 3 then re-installing them again. ( might be some other stuff too )

that is correct ritaotay. If you installed sp3 with IE7 on the pc then You can not uninstall IE7 with out uninstalling sp3 first then uninstall IE7 then reinstall sp3.

I just installed SP3 on my problem and have had no problem so far.
