XP SP3 Available On AutoUpdate

For those, like me, who are not on MS AutoUpdate, go get XP SP3, it is now available. And, plan to turn your computer over to the update for at least 15 minutes.

If you also have Registry protection on, e.g., Spybot, you'll need to be on hand to approve updates to the Registry. One reason I have my MS Update on manual.

Hope SP3 works, so for so good....

IF you have not been reading the thread on here about xp sp3 please do before you try to get sp3. IT is causing major problems on many comptuers. There is no rush to get sp3 and I personally would wait a while especially since the update centers are swamped right now.

Sp3 is not being pushed out in auto updates yet, if you have it set to notify you of updates it will show up there and let you choose to add it but they are not yet pushing it on through for those with it set to auto update.

PLEASE READ up well before attempting to do this update.

READ the info on which version of IE you are using, if you have IE7 installed it is advised to uninstall it prior to installing sp3.

If you install sp3 and it messes up do NOT use system restore.

Hum, interesting I did find the past extensive thread on SP3 after posting my installation experience.

So far, so good. I installed on two computers: Gateway notebook and Dell Desk Top. Both seem to be working fine. I use Firefox, not IE7, but of course IE7 is used to interface with Microsoft.

I was looking forward, and please to say the least, that MS was (has) produced SP3. I have no interest in going to Vista, and SP3 strongly suggests ongoing support for XP.

I was tempted to load the "Beta" version, but decided to wait for the official release, so I "jumped" righ on it.

Yes, with the update to Spybot to 1.5.x (don't remember the last digit, think there is a third digit) loading I found every time I do an update of Windows XP I get one or more Spybot interventions requiring I make a decision on the current update gaining access to the Registry. It has happened with Acrobat Profession updates as well. It never happened with Spypot 1.4.x. I took the default load of Spybot, I did not select anything that would active a guard action on the Registry...as said I like the idea as it should also stop any malware from loading itself at the Registry level. As also said, I wonder how auto update can work in such an environment, I believe it can not. I go for manual update anyway as I like to know update is taking place.

Jane no doubt it will be an Apple commercial if it is not already! I saw one last night that could have been about this reboot over and over situation, have to admit those commercials are funny. IF you have your computers fully updated with all the windows updates and you do not want to tackle this now you do not have to (totally up to you), this is not a super critical update like sp2 was, it is rated moderate. There are some additional changes it makes to the system itself which microsoft would like people to install. But I know a lot of people have decided to at least wait some time to see if there might be some hotfixes that come out to handle some of the issues that are cropping up and there has been discussion in the microsoft forums that this time they may actually put out a hotfix for some of the problems prior to pushing out sp3 in auto update. So waiting is not a bad idea at this point. I would suggest though that you uninstall your IE 7 through add remove before you do install sp3, because if you do not you will not be able to do so at any time in the future and it also affects the ability to try to do fixes on IE7 should they be needed. You can just take it out, put in sp3 when you decide to, then put IE7 back. Or just stay as you are and continue getting your other regular critical windows updates. It is your choice. At this point in time they will not stop you from getting your windows updates just because you do not have sp3, so don't be concerned about that.

blocking sp3 does not in anyway block any other updates so do not worry about that. Minnie what has you confused? did you not know sp3 had been installed on your pc? It went out through auto updates as stated in the original post. susanjn be very very happy do a little dance and rejoice you are one of the lucky ones that is all I can say. (or you have not noticed yet the effects) The horrors others have experienced are quite true and quite numerous and still happening. Anyone doing the install with out first disabling all other programs and most especially any type of security programs including AV, firewall etc can definitely expect problems. Best way to do it still is to go to the actual sp3 download site and download the full sp3 update version(NOT from windows updates), then turn off every thing on the pc or best start in safe mode and try to install. If you have IE7 you better uninstall it prior to putting on sp3 as specified in the instructions listed in an above post. I still don't have it don't plan on getting it.

I still use land-line phone, and I can tell you all the poor reception I hear on the calls, long distance and local, come from poor performance of the cellular on the other end. When I call someone else on a land-line the call is clear and never drops out. I returned an Acer notebook early this year because of driver problems and poor technical support, I also note it had Vista. I then looked for a notebook with XP, found a good deal on a Gateway, demo unit, which had XP. I also have a Dell PC with XP Media and the Dell update DvDs to "Upgrade" to Vista. I have not done so, nor do I plan to, and given the good news that there is a SP3 coming for XP, I'm happy with my decision. SP2 is fine, but SP3 says to me MS will support XP for many years to come. PC World ran tests of Vista and picked as one of the test machine the same Dell PC I have. They said it worked ok, but slower than XP. Whatever the eye candy is with Vista, I've missed seeing it.

Jerry, I am by no means an expert but I THINK the only problem you MAY encounter is IF you have a problem with IE 7 in the future... You won't be able to go back to IE 6 and you may not be able to fix IE 7 with out uninstalling it and SP 3 then re-installing them again. ( might be some other stuff too )

that is correct ritaotay. If you installed sp3 with IE7 on the pc then You can not uninstall IE7 with out uninstalling sp3 first then uninstall IE7 then reinstall sp3.

I just installed SP3 on my problem and have had no problem so far.
