Lavasoft has Ad-aware Problems

Warning... Ad-aware was enhanced and now some versions are not able to download refreshes at all as of April 12ish (approx). The website suggests doing an uninstall and re-install to get newer releases of Ad-aware but that did not work for me.

Please suggest the names of any worthwhile competitors out there.

Ad-aware has been off of my machines for a long time, they just are not a match for programs like the free versions of malwarebytes and superantispyware. Those are the 2 I would go with.

I wil check SAS, thanks. I already have Malwarebytes and use it in synch with AA. I kept AA because MAM did not detect hardly any spyware.

invasive??? I want spyware to do it's job, have np's with it, anytime you are on the web, whatever site you go to including this one spyware/cookies is loading into your PC,and all this does is slow down your PC...don't know bout you but I want rid of it ASAP...and Ad Aware was too slow for me....

I had the same question as Marian. I followed your instructions, Mikie, but I'm still stumped. I clicked the little + sign and a list appeared, all with boxes. I clicked on the Tracking Cookie box at the top, and it automatically checked all the boxes below. So far so good. But when I clicked on Remove, they disappeared and were replaced by the same Tracking Cookie with + sign. I repeated the above steps (more than once), but we seem to be in a never-ending loop.

Confirmed, owbist. Going back to 8.1.2 corrected the problem. Watch out for requests to upgrade to Version 8.2 throughout the installation process. Click on 'later' any time you are asked about it.

My experience on dialup was sad. I was the very last on the telephone line, way out in the sticks, and on good days I downloaded at 4kb/sec dropping to a whopping 2kb in busy times. Seriously consider what can go wrong. The computer as a whole can handle huge amounts of data so it is not at risk. The modem will hopefully act at maximum capacity which is a fraction of the computer's capacity. There is no problem - not the way I see it anyway. Time to enjoy your new confuser On various forums you can see threads on internet speed and people wanting confirmation that they had good downloads. I have always understood the internet is very fluid, your information can pass through numerous servers en route and you have no control over that. So if you hit 3 busy servers on a 5 server hop you cannot expect the best speed. Some web sites are always slow if you visit often you can see that happens.

My experience with Malwarebytes is its missing some bad guys all too often lately ... then superAntiSpyware seems to get most misses.

fwiw; Microsoft now has a new download program.. an 'on demand' security scan... gig file, long scan.. read here.. Microsoft Safety Scanner Bad part is no definition updates... every ten days you have to reinstall the whole thing. Its a large download, and think maybe 1.5hr scan here. Picked up some minor junk the others missed.

Way back when Lavasoft use to be the flagship of adware detection. Then for whatever the reason it began to backslide. It never did get moving forward again as it gave the impression of spinning its wheels as other applications developed and progressed. Now it appears not to be even worth a second tier protection designation.

SAS seems to catch some stuff that MAM does not. However, it does not seem "well designed". Keeps asking me to switch to the paid version, does not automatically delete detected items, etc. But it will do. Thanks for the suggestion, ravencajun.

Microsoft Safety Scanner sounds like an awful product (no definition updates, 1G, 1,5 hr download) but then again, I do not think too highly of Microsoft products. I can only hope they will change it soon. All this crapware would not be here if MS O/Ss were designed to prevent them in the first place.... Grrrrrr. I was going to try it anyway until I read the piece about a 1.5 hr download. Lord, no. Ha! But thanks for the info mikie. It is good to know what is available out there.
