Hey, Greg! You've gotten some good advice already. I'm concerned about the nutrients, as well. Fish Emulsion is a good fertilizer for outdoor plants, plants in larger containers or raised beds, and for plants growing in-ground. Fish Emulsion needs to be broken down by micro-organisms in the soil to become available for the plant's use; and so, when temperature or moisture levels don't support those populations of microbes, et cetera, the Fish Emulsion isn't broken down and the plant doesn't get those nutrients in a regular, consistent dose. Further, with certain Fish Emulsion, if the soil temps are too low, the unprocessed Emulsion can lead to potential ammonia toxicity in the soil. That's why I only use it when soil/mix temps are above 50F during the primary outdoor growing season. The key to a great fertilizer is inclusion of micro-nutrients and nutrient ratios. Miracle Grow works well in the 3:1:2 ratio (such as 12-4-8 NPK), but will typically lack proper Calcium and Magnesium. Other citrus fertilizers may offer a 5:1:3 ratio, which would also work well, as long as the micro-nutrients are also covered. Meyer Mike and I happen to use Foliage Pro 9-3-6, which contains everything, and we also adjust tapwater pH with vinegar. Just to cover all bases....you did add Lime in your 5-1-1 mix, yes? Josh

It wilted due to stress. Maybe a lack of water. I'm guessing there were few root hairs on the roots. Transferring from a system where roots are constantly wet to one where they are only slightly damp can be a shock. Try watering heavily. They might pull out of it. Sometimes a plant can look like it's dead when it's in shock, but pulls out just fine. But, sometimes they really are dead. I grow all plants hydroponically at the beginning. All my soil garden plants are started in an ebb and flow system. However, these plants are in coco coir and develop some really nice root hairs. My plants rarely experience transplant shock and when they do, it's because I did something clutzy like dropped them when pulling them out. I've transplanted from DWC (where the roots just dangle in water) to soil, too. The plants suffered for a day, but pulled out of it. I thought they would die. Something to consider is that if you plant in direct sunlight, that could hurt them, too. It's best to transplant to soil on overcast days or shade the plants with something. I'm guessing the basil is of pretty good size, too. It's best to harvest some of the leaves to reduce transpiration if the plant is used to constantly being immersed in water. I wouldn't do it now as the plants seem to be overly stressed, but in the future you might keep that in mind.

Hi again Provence, When I was young - almost 78 years ago (I have a birthday tomorrow) life was a lot more stable and there wasn't the speed of change that there is, these days. People worked for one employer throughout their working life, for heaven's sakes!! About the only thing constant in modern life - is change. There are many fluctuations in life, also - some ups and some downs, with some hum-drum stuff in between. Which is precisely how the stock market works. It might be a wise thing for your offsrping to put some of their asset into a long-term system - for use either when they need expensive education, or looking to retirement (ha-ha! as far as a kid is concerned). If you want to choose some (I'd suggest equity-based) mutual funds for diversification, fine - but don't forget that the manager slips about a fifth of the average increased value into his pocket. If s/he's smart enough to equal the average growth of the market as a whole - which few are. And they get their annual percentage, even if they devekop no growth at all. My suggestion would be a high quality, dividend-paying stock (for their value tends to deteriorate less than average, in a down market). As an earlier poster said, they are very pleased with some of the results that good quality stocks have produced for their kids, over a number of years. Further - if your kid wants to buy a car, if the only available collateral is the car ... ... guess what the rate of interest will be (even if s/he can qualify)? But if s/he has a few thousand dollars worth of stock which s/he can use as collateral for a line of credit at the bank/credit union ... the rate of interest will be a very large percentage lower. A good lesson for a kid to learn. Credit cards are a PITA. Payday loans are a PITA. Being without a nest-egg, giving one some financial maneuvering room, is a PITA. And a neighbour's relative is about to get a severance package from work due to termination (auto manufacturing). He's in mid-50s - and has a second mortgage ... at something like 18%. He should have had a good financial advisor talking into his ear, years ago - (and been willing to listen, of course). Learning how money works - a great hobby - that pays well. And it's important for kids to learn how to boss their money - for if they don't boss it ... it'll boss them! Have a great week.
