for randy_ca....booting from main hard drive

This is a follow up from a previous post about my added Seagate ext HD. I see that I get to my BIOS by pressing F8 and that takes me to the screen where I can enter Safe Mode, etc. There is a choice there called "enable boot logs". Is that where I get to the place to tell the OS that I want it to boot from the main hard drive and not my new external drive that is on a usb port? As you can tell, I don't know enough to be very adventurous in exploring that menu. Thanks!

What's happening is the computer is trying to boot from the external.

In the BIOS under Boot, set it so the main HD is the first boot device, or the DVD/CD ROM can be first and the main HD second, that won't matter as long as the main HD is set to boot before any other drives or usb drives.>>>

Bios are made by different mfgs, so can't give you exact wording, but under BOOT or Main you'll find something about boot order.

I have one machine that boots with Flash Drives and External Drives, another that won't, no matter what I've enabled in the bios.

So on the one machine that won't boot with flash drives or external drives, I just unplug them, boot - then plug them back in.

That's not the BIOS. That's the boot option menu in Windows. The BIOS is earlier than that.

Depending on your PC, you may need to hit F1, F2, ESC or some other key BEFORE the windows boot process starts. There is usually a message that displays along hte bottom of the screen telling you which key to press, but you also usually have a short time to press it (if I have to read it, I usually miss my chance and have to reboot).

I just start tapping the key repeatedly immediately as it begins the boot up process to catch it.

I ran into something this weekend when working on a friends laptop that resulted from her removing an external hard drive with out properly using the safely remove icon, she told me she only did it 2 or 3 times normally she did use the icon. And once I looked up the error on google I found many many others that had the same thing happen to them and all of them also had an external hard drive they would attach, from all the info and reading I did that was the cause. What happens is you start to get an invalid drive error message, the one she was getting was invalid drive G:\, any time I tried to go to add remove programs I got that error so could not remove out dated programs, any time I tried to install things it gave that same error, so there was no way to try to update or clean out anything. Could not install or remove due to that error. After researching I found a way to go to the command prompt and type in a substitute code and that would let me remove or install programs however upon reboot it was right back, meaning anytime she needs to add or remove she will need to do that command prompt code first, and when I looked in My Computer it showed a G: drive it was an exact copy of the C: drive it was a ghost said it had the exact same volume etc. I tried every thing I found online to try to get it to go away including some registry edits but on hers the registry items were not changed so I could not edit it. So if you do use an external hard drive and you see that you can not safely remove I HIGHLY recommend just wait till you can shut down if that is how you have to do it because you really do not want to have to deal with that ghost drive mess. for those interested the exact error was Error 1327 Invalid Drive G:\ and to make matters worse on her pc everywhere it showed the G: drive it was grayed so there was no way to change that drive letter itself back to C. Really strange but by the google search not very rare.

I am going to get a whole house surge protector. But should I also invest in getting "good" surge protectors for my electronics (tv and related peripherals, computer and peripherals?). If so, could someone point me toward a good one. I wouldn't know what makes a surge protector good (and think just getting expensive is not the way to make the selection). I do have surge protectors in all those areas, but don't think we selected them with any real knowledge. Thank you. Lynn. PS - and my efforts to copy are delayed - bc. I can't find the replacement drive. We received so many packages last week - and during the power outage - so I was opening and putting things away by flashlight - and so far, I can't find it. have this scary feeling that my husband or cleaning woman thought the box was trash and tossed it out. Hope not.

OK we need to step back a little. You did not mention your operating system nor the program you use to create your back up image. If you have Vista or Windows 7 it comes with a back up utility. XP does not so you need a third party program such as Acronis True Image or similar. From what I can see you external drive came with no back up program installed on it. Using your HP recovery disks will return the computer to the state it was when you first opened the box and set your machine up. All data will be lost unless it is backed up. All bloatware will be installed again, exactly as it left the factory. Restoring an image created in Vista, Win7 or third party software however returns the computer to the exact state it was in when you created that particular image. Some (perhaps all) programs offer incremental backups, in other words they add stuff onto the previous back up. Personally I never allow that, I always create a new image then delete the older one. There is no specific reason for that, it is just one of my many quirks.

I reformatted the My Book - which went smoothly. The copied a short video. Again - worked well. Now I'm copying a whole bunch of videos - and it's taking time. I'm copying about 10-15 hours of standard definition tv shows. So far, it's been over an hour. I have no idea how long it will take via USB2 connection. The 30 minute video took less than 5 minutes. I have follow-up questions. I wonder what the best way is to back up these files. I just opened up My Documents and right-clicked one at a time - then chose the option to "send to" and selected drive e: my book. I'm sure there's a better way to do this, but I don't know what it is. I tried to highlight more than one file at a time (using the shift key) - but it didn't seem to want to let me highlight more than one at a time. I also wonder if I send a file to MY Book - does that mean it's moved to My Book and the original isn't on my PC - or is it copied there? Raven - I know I should know this by now, but I don't. How do I find my firefox profiles and bookmarks files so I can copy them to the external drive? Lastly, is there a way to copy files to the external drive in such a way that I can get prompted if the file already exists? so I don't make a copy and have 2 copies in there? with many files (like pictures), I may get a prompt that says the file already exists - should I overwrite it or skip. Is there anything like that when copying files to the external drive? At some point, should I bite the bullet and buy a software program to do this. Western Digital tries to give trial periods for the following software : Memeo Autobackup, Memeo Autosync. Any reason to get these? Or any other software? Also, when I reformatted the drive, it wiped the drive clean. Is there anything (drivers, software?) I would need to download from Western Digital (to replace anything I might have erased). I know that the proprietary software that's sometimes loaded with these things (like cameras, printers) may not be necessary at all. Thanks. Lynn.

On your HP it's F1 for the BIOS and setup.
Press it right at the beginning of the boot process.

Thanks everyone...I got there! :)...but didn't make any changes since I didn't know which one to choose. Here are my choices:

1. 1st Floppy Drive
2. SM-HP DVD Write
3. PM-ST32008228

CD Rom Drive

Which do I choose? I don't know what #3 is...I googled PM-ST32008228 and didn't get anything. Thank you!

I, like perhaps other members, didn't have a clue as to what the original thread contained. After doing a search with the engine provided on the homepage I found it on page three.

You might want to consider putting update posts on the original thread. When it pops to the top members know there is new information. It sure does help assisting with answers and learning from others.

Your boot order looks fine.
#3 is your main harddrive, most likely a Seagate St3200 822A

I know I don't have any settings for USB in mine, so I just have the external unplugged during bootup.

I'm happy to have a 1TB external drive to store stuff even though mine doesn't have a power switch.

If anybody wants to know, the BIOS is the Basic Input/Output System on your motherboard, kind of a scary place at first, fortunately you can exit without saving any changes.

Thanks for your advice, randy_ca. I've learned a lot from all of you. I'll just do the unplug and plug thing then as you do. Yes, I do see the ST32008228 under the Drive Information in Belarc now.
