Note These errors can occur even if no changes have been made to network settings" Then I found this one: Resolutions 1. A misconfigured Proxy/Firewall can cause this problem. Double-check the Proxy/Firewall settings. Add the following urls to the exception list within your Firewall/Proxy: http://*.update.microsoft.com https://*.update.microsoft.com http://download.windowsupdate.com For help configuring Proxy/Firewall refer to documentation or contact the manufacturer. My question is: What is a Proxy/Firewall? I just recently downloaded Norton Antivirus 2009 and I understand that it has an inbound firewall. When I went to My security center it shows that the Windows Firewall is on. I shut it off and when I did the red shield with an X in the middle of it(Windows Security Alert) showed up on my taskbar. I can't find anywhere where it says on the box that Norton Antivirus 2009 has a firewall. But I read on another forum that this particular version does have a firewall inbound only. This is very confusing. If I do have a firewall from Norton then I need to shut off the Windows Firewall right? If so then how do I get rid of that red shield with the X in the middle of it? Finally I will let you know that everything is back to normal and I am thinking maybe it was their site? Not sure though. thirdfrt!!! Where are you at right now? In other words is there anything on the screen? Is the computer dead or simply not shutting down at all? SP1 has been out 2 years now so any issues would have been resolved long ago.

Hi jean001, If your machine is still slow, when you get time post a Hijackthis log and I will look at it for you. It could prove to be very beneficial here are instructions, Click Here to download HJTInstall.exe Download the one on the left Version 2.0.3 (Beta) Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop. Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Click on Install. It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log into your next post. DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted. DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

For those who aren't thrilled with Link Scanner or those who may just want to see how well AVG operates without it, it is not necessary to delete and reinstall. Double click on the icon appearing in the Notification Area/System Tray>In the appearing interface double click on the Link Scanner component>Uncheck the Enable the AVG Search-Shield (need web browser restart)>Click Save changes. I do not remember if a restart is required. I am sure AVG will advise if necessary. DA
