Error Code 80246005 after update; can't go online

Above error code, also failure to go online, occurred while updating husband's computer prior to MS deadline of April 13 for Vista support. (And am obviously not going to make it.)

HP Pavilion Slimline

Vista Home Premium

IE 7

- Had just successfully installed SP 1, plus the next 11 updates which appeared shortly thereafter.

- When tried to install next 10 updates which appeared, received above error code with message to the effect that "true vector internet monitor has shut down."

Also, access point isn't flashing (dead?)" & I'm unable to go online. (Router is downstairs on my computer, another HP. Access point has been fine until now.)

Located info that true vector internet monitor is in Zone Alarm. ZA is installed but I'm unable to locate the desktop icon. (?) And clicking the exe file does nothing. Did locate the version - 7.1.78.0 -- probably out-of-date, right?

Tried to reset Network adapter -- failed.

In Device Driver, checked Internet Protocol for LAN; versions 4 & 6 are both checked/selected; and says "working properly."

Used Windows Network Diagnostics/Repairing.

Now error is: Network adapter Intel (R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection has hardware issues.

Bottom line: I need that computer to go online! How do I get there?

According to Dave in this thread on a Microsoft forum the fix below solved the issue

Find the update KB842773.
Remove it (in Add/Remove Programs)
Then do a Windows Update
It will then force you to re-update the KB842773 before you can update
anything else.
After re-installing this update, run Windows Update again and it will
download SP2.

Good luck with that, I am concerned however that the firewall has been turned off. What other safety programs are on that computer and are they active or also turned off?

I briefly searched for help last night, but it was too late to go further than I mentioned above. The info I found last night was that the error code, the shutdown of the internet monitor, and the lost connectivity were a set of events which occurred while updating Windows.

I can try Dave's suggestion, but not for an hour or so.

I am also concerned about the firewall. AVG is installed but I didn't think to check to see if it's active; I'll do so before anything else.

What if I uninstall ZoneAlarm, use my computer to download an updated version to a thumb drive, take that upstairs & install ZA?

I could physically disconnect the access point while doing so. But since it's not currently functional, it seems to make little difference. (But if the update is damaged, the same error would likely re-occur, right?)

I'll look at AVG first, try Dave's fix next, then let you know what happened.

I can't find anywhere where it says on the box that Norton Antivirus 2009 has a firewall. But I read on another forum that this particular version does have a firewall inbound only. If you have not already try running a Malwarebytes scan, make sure you can up-Date malwarebytes too Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop click Here Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. zep- I leave my computer on most of the time. We lost power in a wind storm for about 16 hours last night, and when I booted up, the date had reverted again...and I doubt there were Windows updates. However, when I subsequently restarted it, the date was fine. I'm thinking you are right about the battery starting to fail, but I hate to pay a tech to replace it. If the battery completely dies, could I have any serious problems, other than the need to re-set the date if the computer's off for too long? I did a little online reading and it sounds like newer computers only rely on the battery for the date and time. What's your opinion?

Bravo! Very happy to hear your machine is working! I can understand having a 3, 5 and 7 year old ourselves that the laundry piles up FAST! I would suspect the F-27 error is due to over suds error. The hotter that water, the more suds are produced. The smallest amount of detergent produces suds like crazy on sanitary cycle. I have found Tide HE to be very sudsy as it is. I have given up on HE liquids all together. If you have soft water, you may want to give HE powders a try. I find powder to be less sudsy more so on hotter temps and rinses cleaner all together. The target to shoot for is a FEW suds/bubbles being splashed onto the window. In a HE front load machine, too many suds results in reduced cleaning performance, all the water is used up to make suds and there is no water left to actually clean the clothes. When I used liquid, I would get a pitcher of hot water, and a table spoon of liquid at a time followed by flushing it into the machine with hot water from the pitcher into the machine. So I would put 2 tablespoons into the dispenser then start the machine, once the machine had filled on it's own, I would watch the suds. No suds yet? Add another table spoon of liquid flushed with some hot water from the pitcher. It could get a little tricky using the Sanitary cycle, because as the machine heated the water hotter, more suds were produced. There is a learning curve with HE front loaders, learning how to not over suds the machine, while still using enough detergent to get clean clothes. Having 3 young children, almost all their clothes have been washed on sanitary on a regular basis. The biggest thing I had to get my brain around was that SUDS does not equal cleaning power. I had to get used to seeing very little to no suds and trusting that the clothes were getting clean. Worst thing that could happen is I had to re-run the load with more detergent, and chalk it up to a test run. I have been using home made laundry soap the past few months and find it works better than anything store bought, and produces very little suds and is very forgiving for over dosing the machine. I have tried pretty much every liquid and powder on the market both HE and non-HE. As far as claims for HE detergent (both liquid and powder) producing less suds, I have not found that to be the case. I found no difference in suds or cleaning power between for example Tide HE powder or normal regular every day Tide. Remember that all detergent manufacturers want you to use as much detergent as possible. Half or less of what they tell you to use usually does the job. Have been eying up the Maytag 3000 series in Crimson red as a replacement for our 6.5 year old Whirlpool Duet HT which is getting a little tired after 10+ loads a week for 6.5 years.

I checked the list for updates installed yesterday -- only SP1 is there, not the other 11 I thought had installed.

So it appears that SP1 caused the problem.

I can uninstall & re-install SP1. But before I do, I'll first look for further info. Most likely, I'll still need your help.

I don't understand what you mean by safe? If those are the directions for the given error code from Microsoft then try them. Or you can try these below (Less to do) first and see what happens.

To fix this error, try:

Click start-run type services.msc then press enter

Look for the Automatic Updates Service, right click it and choose to stop

Click start->run type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution then press enter

Open the DataStorage folder and delete its contents.

Click start->run type services.msc

right click the Automatic Update Service and choose to start

Now try running the Updates again.

Well, it's like this.

I followed zep's instructions. Still unable to go online.

But because the error message that persisted was about the Internet Monitor (in Zone Alarm), I uninstalled Zone Alarm, the installed the current version.

So I figure we unnecesarily complicated the issues by concentrating on the MS error message & ignoring that for the Internet Monitor. In any event, all is well, and I am continuing to update the computer.

Something I didn't mention is that the machine is very slow. So I used Disk Clean, disabled AVG's link scanner, and just now ran a Maleware bytes scan which came up clean.

The machine is still slow, but the good news is that it's functioning & goes online.

Hi jean001,

If your machine is still slow, when you get time post a Hijackthis log and I will look at it for you. It could prove to be very beneficial here are instructions,

Click Here to download HJTInstall.exe Download the one on the left Version 2.0.3 (Beta)
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log into your next post.
DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

I can do that, but not certain just when. Things are very busy right now, specially since I was delayed by the need to fix husband's computer.

Don't worry when ever you get time, I want to see the start up programs them may be slowing things down.

Now When i go and click update I get error code 8024001F, now I can't update nor can I get online at my real computer. Help me please!
