My question is: What is a Proxy/Firewall?

I just recently downloaded Norton Antivirus 2009 and I understand that it has an inbound firewall. When I went to My security center it shows that the Windows Firewall is on. I shut it off and when I did the red shield with an X in the middle of it(Windows Security Alert) showed up on my taskbar. I can't find anywhere where it says on the box that Norton Antivirus 2009 has a firewall. But I read on another forum that this particular version does have a firewall inbound only. This is very confusing. If I do have a firewall from Norton then I need to shut off the Windows Firewall right? If so then how do I get rid of that red shield with the X in the middle of it?

Finally I will let you know that everything is back to normal and I am thinking maybe it was their site? Not sure though.

From what I understand:

Norton AntiVirus 2009 does not have a Firewall and should therefore either Turn On Windows' Firewall, or - Highly-Recommended - use a well-Trusted Firewall. Thanks!

I went in and checked and my Windows Firewall is set to on and when I tried to shut it off the red shield with an X on it showed up in my taskbar. I will send you the link so you can see what I am talking about. Last year when I had 2008 my windows firewall was shut off I guess by Norton but not this time. Everything in Norton is working fine but I want to be protected. Should I keep the Windows Firewall on? If not then how do I shut it off and keep it from showing up on my taskbar that it is off. This is very confusing to me.

go to start> control panel> security center> on the left you will see some options one is change the way it notifies me or something to that effect select that one and uncheck firewall if you do not want to see the shield. I think that is how to do it, has been a long time since I went there.

I went where you instructed me to go and I found it and it works.

I have found a couple of things that I would like for you to read.

1. From a website that I will post a link to.
Following a successful activation chat session with Symantec Help & Support, during which I was told that NAV 2009 has a firewall,

2. NAV 2009 don't have the Internet Worm Protection component that acted as an inbound firewall in NAV 2008. The attack blocking features of this Internet Worm Protection has been added into the Intrusion Prevention engine in NAV 2009. That is the reason why you are unable to find the firewall in the new version- NAV 2009. So, you can use Windows Firewall that can protect you completely(both inbound and outbound). You can otherwise install any other firewall(free) like Comodo or PC Tools Firewall for added protection. Scroll down to the second post.

I disagree with this person because from what I have read Windows Firewall is only an inbound firewall right?

Now from the HTML help section for the Intrusion Prevention engine in Norton Antivirus 2009 it says this.

You can turn on or turn off Intrusion Prevention. When you turn on Intrusion Prevention, you can use the various options that are available for this feature to customize how the firewall monitors and responds to suspicious inbound communications.

When Intrusion Prevention is turned off, your computer is not adequately protected from Internet threats and security risks. Mine is on.

So according to the Norton Help section it does have a firewall. Why is this so confusing, shouldn't Norton just tell us that it actually has a firewall instead of hiding that fact from us on the box?

So after reading this should I keep the windows firewall on or turn it off via your instructions? I have not experienced any problems with the Windows Firewall on, since I installed Norton Antivirus 2009.

Again thanks for the info and I know exactly how to shut it off without showing the shield now.

as to the windows firewall question it depends on the version of windows, if xp then it is only a one way firewall but in vista it is now a 2 way firewall, so depending on the version the person was discussing they may or may not be correct.

It is very confusing the way Norton has described it and truthfully I really do not know because I have had no dealings with Norton in years since I got it off my original pc.

I think from what I am reading if it were me I would just get free zone alarm or another good free firewall and use that rather than what ever happens to be in Norton since it sounds like it is one way and can be disabled.

maybe someone that has more experience with Norton can shed some light on this.
I was under the impression you did not get a full working firewall 2way with Norton unless you got their SUITE, but I really don't know.

Well Joyce, you old git-tar strummer, how the heck are ya? Couldn't help but stick my nose in here. As you recall I was a LONG time Norton fan. However, I haven't recommended old Nort now for many years. Symantec just plain screwed that up almost as bad as Microsoft could. I use Comodo for my firewall and AVG for my antivirus, both free. Not adverse to paying for quality but very adverse to paying for inadequacy. After unintalling Norton these days it seems to resolve issues. As you know I don't like ANY preloaded software and now that they preload it, I'm disenchanted with it altogether.

I am sorry I thought I posted that I have WindowsXPSP2 but after checking I didn't tell you that. Ugh! I know better too. That's why I said what I said because I thought I had posted it. I have no idea what Vista has on it. Well anyway I have WinXPSP2, I won't be updating to Vista until I get a new computer. I will try and remember to post my OS for now on.

So what I have is a inbound firewall from Norton and an inbound firewall from Windows XP. I don't have an outbound one. I use to have ZoneAlarm and the people who built this computer removed it because it was causing lots of conflict with my computer back then and they didn't like it.

Well Cynic, I am still strumming that guitar but, not as much as I use to. I am busy watching my grand-daughter and 2 year old grandson. I bring it out every now and then but I am always afraid little hands will get to them, (I have more than one guitar if you remember. "Smiles")so I keep them locked up in their cases.

Hope things are going well with you, as for me I am doing so much better and am able to do a lot more things since my arms are back at a 100% now.

As you know I don't like ANY preloaded software and now that they preload it, I'm disenchanted with it altogether.

Norton was not preloaded into this computer, when I purchased it they were going to preload MacAfee into this computer and I flat out said NO and told them to install Norton. So they did install it from the CD, it was never preloaded onto this computer. Since then I have always used Norton (CD's) and I have not had any problems with them except confusion as to if I had a firewall or not. I have been well protected. Norton Antivirus 2009 protected me from a Trojan Horse and I didn't have to do anything it took care of it. Now my son has MacAfee that I mentioned above and he had to find a way to remove his Trojan Horse, it didn't protect him. So right now I am very happy with Norton so far. I just wanted to make sure that I have a firewall that will help protect me even farther and that won't conflict with Norton Antivirus 2009.
