Microsoft Extends XP Malware Updates One Year

Microsoft softened its hard-line stance on halting support for Windows XP after the April 2014 cutoff date, stating it will provide antimalware signature updates for XP users through July 14, 2015.

The move, Microsoft said, is designed to help businesses complete XP migrations.

This could also be related to a rumor that MS is readying Windows 9 for launch in 2015. I think they have had to admit that Windows 8 has not been good for them. Anyway, this is good news for so many who are still struggling to decide what to do.

Still no security patches as far as I read, so it could the announcement give a false sense of security. From what I see most didn't care anyway and will continue to operate it.

Seems like Windows 8 is one big beta test, and all the results can be used to make a better Windows called 9. Kind of like Vista was to Windows 7. When I first saw Windows 8, I though it was made by Fisher Price, and then there's that split personality thing..

I think we are supposed to skip every other operating system.

Thanks raven. I looked at the first link you provided and I don't see anything that resembles what I had. So I still have a question. As I recall what popped up on my screen was something that looked like it came from Microsoft, said the computer was infected with a virus, and warned not to shut the computer off. It told me I should click to start the antivirus program. The first time it happened--when I fell for it--I assumed that it would run Windows Defender. My question is, then, does Microsoft ever do this? That is, if indeed I get a virus in the midst of searching the web, is there ever a legitimate Microsoft warning that pops up telling you not to shut the computer down and to click to run a scan? If not, then there's no problem with trying to find out what's legit and what is not. With whatever I got it was truly hard to tell. Thanks!

Microsoft Security Essentials has a setting in the rear that helps somewhat for faster scans.. I set mine to limit use to 100% of cpu ... default, if I recall right, was 30%. MSE no matter what the cpu % is set .. seems to always give other programs 1st priority, and sits & waits for the cpu to be unbusy for its little fun fast time slices. Thats probably why it seems to take so long to finish an update or scan. The newer version seems to update fractionally much smaller definition downloads. Which is nice when you push a manual scan!

you got hit with a misdirect for the dreaded antivirusxp infection. Many many sites even legit sites have been having these misdirections occurring, the best thing you can do is not click anything but just close the browser out, if you click on any part of it that begins the install, it sounds like your WOT saved you. But I would definitely run malwarebytes and superantispyware daily for a few days (update them of course) and do a separate online virus scan also. Online Virus Scan you must run it with IE. are you still seeing anything strange or any warnings from down by the clock? remember do not click on any part of it, if you have to shut down the pc instead do that.

@chuggerguy I almost downloaded another distro recommended for XP users since it's supposed to have a very similar desktop. It's called Zorin OS. "A general-use distribution that mimics the look, feel, and functionality of Windows. This is geared for those who prefer the Windows interface or need an easier way to transition from Windows to Linux. Based on: Ubuntu." My son has an old Dell laptop that has only 256MB RAM, so Puppy Linux would be great to try on that one. Yes, I'll try several before deciding which one to actually install. BTW, I did boot into Mint last evening, and at first was totally lost. However, I soon found the start menu, etc., so I am anxious to give it a try.

Vista was condemned at the time, and now it is herald as having been the gateway to the future.

A user has to just get past the learning curve of the obvious Start page and Desktop duo, and W8 is just fine.

XP is fading into the past, and its users have to accept the change. The train is leaving the station.
