Skype or malware/virus question

I downloaded Skype a couple of days ago. This evening while I was doing something else a notice popped up saying that Windows needed attention. It was one of those balloons that pop up down near the clock. When I clicked on it, the Skype box came up and said this:

This seemed a little suspicious to me, so while trying to copy the link above so I could bring it here and ask about it, I accidently clicked on it instead and went to the registryscan web site. I have WOT and all the little markers were marked red. So I shut down the browser and ran updated malwarebytes, which came up clean. So, is this something to worry about and fix? I have AVG free, Zonealarm free, Spybot Search & Rescue, superantispyware, spyware blaster, all free versions. The only one I have run is malwarebytes, because they take so long to scan. I use XP Home, & Firefox. Anything else you need?

That is not a legitimate message. Skype is not a virus scanner and will not alert you of viruses. Let us know if you continue to get the pop up down by the clock...

Really should run all scans different programs can find different things, after all that is why you have them installed.

Thanks Zep. I know that Skype is not a virus scanner, but it is on the Skype page or communication box or whatever it is called, that it appears on. It is called a System Notice (with the registered symbol after it). And yes I am running the others, it just takes time. Thanks

AVG is a software program that cleans up viruses, similar to Norton Anti-virus and McAffee. It has a free version and a paid version. Many people, myself included, use the free version, and find it to be perfectly fine for protecting the computer from viruses. If you do not use AVG than you should not be having this issue. If you are using a different virus protection program and are getting virus alerts when you come to Gardenweb, then that's a different problem all together.

you got hit with a misdirect for the dreaded antivirusxp infection. Many many sites even legit sites have been having these misdirections occurring, the best thing you can do is not click anything but just close the browser out, if you click on any part of it that begins the install, it sounds like your WOT saved you. But I would definitely run malwarebytes and superantispyware daily for a few days (update them of course) and do a separate online virus scan also.

are you still seeing anything strange or any warnings from down by the clock? remember do not click on any part of it, if you have to shut down the pc instead do that.

Janette apart from doing as Zep and Raven suggests if you are new to Skype you might consider changing a few features.

Never insert enough personal info to be found. Then click Tools/Options and click on each option on the left side. Set your options to only allow those already in your contact list to call you. This stops people from searching and asking to be allowed on your list. In the last 2 months some 'sexy ladies' seem to have found a way to find people and a few of those unwanted contacts are a little harder to remove. You will enjoy Skype I am sure.

Raven, thank you. I haven't noticed any problem today, but I haven't been on long. I have run all the other security programs that I mentioned except spybot which I will shortly. I also ran ESET as you suggested and it found no problems.

Owbist, I will do as you suggested also. I don't expect to use skype often. I only downloaded it because my brother is gone for a month and he uses it all the time to talk with his friends. I may use it with my granddaughter if she wants to try it.

that is good news it sounds like you dodged the bullet when you shut down your browser, that was a good move rather than click anywhere on it.
Just keep a watch out should it pop up again some where, it has been showing up on a lot of sites.
