Skype or malware/virus question

I downloaded Skype a couple of days ago. This evening while I was doing something else a notice popped up saying that Windows needed attention. It was one of those balloons that pop up down near the clock. When I clicked on it, the Skype box came up and said this:

This seemed a little suspicious to me, so while trying to copy the link above so I could bring it here and ask about it, I accidently clicked on it instead and went to the registryscan web site. I have WOT and all the little markers were marked red. So I shut down the browser and ran updated malwarebytes, which came up clean. So, is this something to worry about and fix? I have AVG free, Zonealarm free, Spybot Search & Rescue, superantispyware, spyware blaster, all free versions. The only one I have run is malwarebytes, because they take so long to scan. I use XP Home, & Firefox. Anything else you need?

That is not a legitimate message. Skype is not a virus scanner and will not alert you of viruses. Let us know if you continue to get the pop up down by the clock...

Really should run all scans different programs can find different things, after all that is why you have them installed.

Thanks Zep. I know that Skype is not a virus scanner, but it is on the Skype page or communication box or whatever it is called, that it appears on. It is called a System Notice (with the registered symbol after it). And yes I am running the others, it just takes time. Thanks

some of the most common sites have fallen prey to hackers using poor code or outdated scripts on a site to put into the site a malicious link, I am talking very reputable sites and the site owners have no idea it happened till they start getting feed back telling them it is happening then they find the culprit. So never assume the site is safe just best to say well I hope it is safe but will always use caution and keep my programs updated and run those scans regularly. Do not be scared when you see something like this happen it is exactly what you want your program to do, I much prefer a false positive over the alternative! But anytime you have a question copy down the info that is provided so you can come here well informed so we can try to find out what the situation was. The name is essential because these days the rogue programs that are out there are very close in looks and names to the real programs so please do take the time to look at it closely and write down the exact name. " I think this depends on the particular software, the intended message and context of the conversation. Just as an example (not intended as proselytizing), I use what I think of as Norton Anti Virus. But it's really the Norton Internet Security system. It's a suite of many, many programs and routines that handle a large number of functions. Website reputation, antivirus-malware-spyware-phishing blocking and removal, firewall, temp file cleanup, safety of files downloaded from websites or emails, email scanning, and on and on. Other than the occasional message that pops up, it's invisible. AND, it schedules scans on the fly for only when the PC is not in use. It never interrupts or delays other activity. I never touch it, never schedule anything, and almost never see anything. I think all the best in class products (there are maybe 4 or 5 best choices) are similar to what I described, comprehensive "systems". They're well worth the modest annual cost.

I am working on an Asus, Windows 7 PC. One year old Problem: I lost suitable graphic devices. Here is how I did it. I have been working thru the night with no problems. I read the advice Raven gave to someone about using Secunia and checked out my system and they found some vulnerabilities - Adobe and some Microsoft critical updates. I wanted the updates and got them. It was also suggested that I get rid of Quicktime which I thought I had. So , I did. Afterwards, things looked good and I continued my break some more to play solitare. The icon is on my task bar. I clicked on the picture and got "No suitable graphics devices found." This appears to be true of all my games that came with Microsoft. I got out my Seagate Go Flex and thought I could get it off there. Wanted to first use Kaspersky to assure it was safe. 20 minutes into the check I got a notice to turn the computer off - serious words (that blinded my brain)- if this is the first command to reboot then I should do it and I did. Things seem in order except the message of "not suitable graphics devices found." I decided to restore back 1 1/2 hours which took out only a critical Microsoft update (KB2588542) Don't know how I lost the devices but quite sure it is user error. Any thoughts? PS: Kept getting a message to use Uniblue. I didn't but looked it up it is partnered with Microsoft someway but the reviews that looked honest said to stay away from it.

Thanks, I went from commercial to AVG when I retired and turned in my company computer, in 2003. I was disappointed by something in AVG about 7 years ago and went to Avira Free. Yes, I have strange problems... the XP machine that brought me here this time was even having problems sending email from Thunderbird...it downloaded okay but time out on send. In parallel tonight I switched back to DSL from my trial of Comcast Cable (don't see any real improvement due to speed) and I tried Thunderbird over DSL and the message went right out. I will Call Comcast tonight and drop my cable access. I'm too much in bed with the DSL email service to want to change my address. I may migrate of a few months and may drop the telephone all together. Changes in my life of late makes keeping the wireline phone doubtful. I also have an email account with att.com mail (now Yahoo) and that does not works with any access, like gmail etc.

you got hit with a misdirect for the dreaded antivirusxp infection. Many many sites even legit sites have been having these misdirections occurring, the best thing you can do is not click anything but just close the browser out, if you click on any part of it that begins the install, it sounds like your WOT saved you. But I would definitely run malwarebytes and superantispyware daily for a few days (update them of course) and do a separate online virus scan also.

are you still seeing anything strange or any warnings from down by the clock? remember do not click on any part of it, if you have to shut down the pc instead do that.

Janette apart from doing as Zep and Raven suggests if you are new to Skype you might consider changing a few features.

Never insert enough personal info to be found. Then click Tools/Options and click on each option on the left side. Set your options to only allow those already in your contact list to call you. This stops people from searching and asking to be allowed on your list. In the last 2 months some 'sexy ladies' seem to have found a way to find people and a few of those unwanted contacts are a little harder to remove. You will enjoy Skype I am sure.

Raven, thank you. I haven't noticed any problem today, but I haven't been on long. I have run all the other security programs that I mentioned except spybot which I will shortly. I also ran ESET as you suggested and it found no problems.

Owbist, I will do as you suggested also. I don't expect to use skype often. I only downloaded it because my brother is gone for a month and he uses it all the time to talk with his friends. I may use it with my granddaughter if she wants to try it.

that is good news it sounds like you dodged the bullet when you shut down your browser, that was a good move rather than click anywhere on it.
Just keep a watch out should it pop up again some where, it has been showing up on a lot of sites.
