Train Rack Help from those who have them

I need to add storage for towels above the toilet and want to use a train rack. It seems I'm very limited in design and style if I want one in brushed/satin nickel to go with my other accessories. I have located two so far that might work; Vintage Train Rack from Restoration Hardware and XX43 Hotelier Hotel Shelf with bar by Ginger. The Hotel Shelf by Ginger at 24"W x 11"D seems a bit small, but it has a lower bar to hang towels. The Vintage by RH is 31"W x 12.5"D, but it is more of a box (2 shelves) with no towel bar.

Do any of you have these, and if so, can you tell me how you like them.

Are there other brands/sources I should look at (love the Pottery Barn one but it only comes in polished nickel).

Any help is appreciated.

I have a ginger Hotel Shelf with lower bar. Mine is in ORB...I will go and measure it. It is 24" and on it I presently have 2 guest towels on the lower bar and was really planning to put some bath towels on the rack. Seems like I have a bath blanket on it and nothing else, but it would hold a lot. Not sure if this one comes in brushed nickel or not.

Thank you! That is the one I am looking at and it does come in satin nickel. It helps to see real towels on it. Do you remember the design of the mounting unit that you ordered? I believe they have to be ordered seperately.

My personel experience with 2 different N.C. stores produced similar results but required different efforts on my part. First, a less pleasant experience with Furnitureland South required many phone calls and attempts by them to repair an armorie that had poorly mounted door hinges (the doors would not stay fully open since the hinges were not plumb). This was a frustrating experience since they sent 2 different repair crews from N.C. to northern Va. (actually delivery personnel who stopped by on their route) who were less than knowledgeable about any repairs beyond fixing scratches. Finally afer many exhausting telephone exchanges, Furnitureland South replaced the unit with a new one. The brand was Lexington (manufactured offshore) and we would not recommend this brand to anyone because of the poor quality control. The second experience was with Boyles, with the assistance of Terra in customer service and the help of Larry Hendricks (the owner). They were very helpfull in working a problem of settling down-fill in a H&M Austin sofa and chair, (these are the straightback versions, not the bustle-back style). As an aside we love these pieces, and the down-fill is luxurious, but problematic so we would recommend their foam cores rather than the down cores. Boyles ordered replacement cores for the backs and seats (a total of 8 cores) and sent a delivery crew to replace them. The crew was unable to remove the existing cores (sewn in place). Boyles then scheduled a pickup of the units by their movers and took the units back to H&M in Hickory N.C. for new cores to be factory installed. During this time we also spoke with the H&M factory reps. directly since these was amazement at H&M that the cores were not removable in the seatbacks. All in all this was a good experience and Boyles and H&M treated us fairly and timly. In both cases there was no charge for any of the work or visits/deliveries etc. One additional note, we were interested in purchasing an ottoman for the H&M sofa and worked with Duane, the owner on The Keeping Room, a small high quality store in Alexandria, Va. The key was to find a match to the leather after 4 years of ownership. He procurred a sample from H&M that was not a great match, and then coordinated an attempt to match the leather when the sofa and chair were at H&M for the core replacements. He was very helpfull and personally involved with his contacts at the factory. While ultimately we were unsuccessful with the match, we have since become customers of The Keeping Room because of his excellant service level. So, while we have used Furnitureland South and Boyles in N.C. and have had very good service from Boyles (even after 4 year from the original purchase date) we ultimately made our most recent purchase of a Leathercraft desk chair at a competitive price from The Keeping Room (about an hour away). Great news. We had block party. Neighbor boy is back to visit. There were probably 7 boys and just my dd. The other kids were all really little. We had two bounce houses and a water bounce thingy. DD came to me to show me how she was going to dress for day, very appropriate and she was conscience of doing that. Later she changed to wear her bikini but kept shorts and a tank over it the entire day even though some older girls walked around with shorts and nothing covering their bikini tops. DD chose to sit with the moms when they guys started playing with water soakers. I told her she should go play too because they are all friends playing. She though she should not but did when I told her it was ok because that was what we were there for. We also let her invite two friends, specific friends we knew would not cause any drama,etc. They all had fun and interacted with themselves more than with the boys. The girls spend the night and allowed me to take all phones away. I snuck them back in the bedroom this morning so they will wake to find them. I also checked after they went to bed to make sure they were sleeping and all was fine. It was a great day for all of us. My dh even commented on how she has improved so much since he got her into kayaking. He is really happy and they are both excited to hit the river together. She even got an email from a boy and she told him she did not need his drama and to not bother her. Baby steps, baby steps.

Thank you so much! That is the original floor tile from 1939 but the rest of the tile, including the border, is new. It's about 45 inches from the top of the tank to the shelf. Your decision might also depend on where your rack is going....obviously no one is walking by ours, it's not near the entrance to the room, etc. So really, we just had to factor in standing in front of it. You may have other considerations like walking past it to get in the bathroom or the shower or whatever. Also, our toilet has an elongated bowl, so it sticks out a little further than a round bowl, so you're standing a tiny bit father away from the towels, rack etc. I think if it fits in your space you should definitely get it! :-)

Questions for those who have sewn or had made drapes from panels

I am a seamstress. The previous posters were correct in suggesting you may need more panels to make your drapes sufficiently full. No "professional" is going to hand sew your drapes together. As a professional, to do a professional job, she will have open the seams at the sides, which means undoing the top and hem as well, to stitch the panels together. She should either serge the seams together or use a French seam. The entire top seam will have to be ripped open to add the pleating tape and re-stitched. Generally, there needs to be four inches of fabric at the top to cover the pleating tape. You can have her make the pleats for you, and they will be permanent. Or you can buy the more expensive hooks that make the pleats by themselves. The work of the seamstress is greater than you'd think, because she has to take the vertical seams apart before she sews the panels together. The entire top hem will need to be picked or razored apart, the tabs removed, pleating tape added and a new seam at the bottom edge of the pleating tape. She will then re-stitch the hem where she took it apart to stitch the panels together. Razoring all the seams apart carefully and putting them back together, adding pleating tape, re-doing the hem, I'd estimate $250 to $275. She should ask to see them, first, though, to make sure there's nothing that would make them taking them apart more difficult.

Here's mine. It's mostly used for "looks". The towels, etc I use on a daily basis are kept in the linen closet at the front of the tub. I like it :)

coach...My brackets are the Empire line of Ginger...as is the light fixture, the towel bar (on the opposite wall that you cannot see in the photo) and the mirror.

Although now it is for "looks" as someone else said, I am thinking when I have over-night guests I can put their towels on the rack or if someone forgets a towel, they can get one from the rack, getting out of the tub.

Rejuvenation has some hefty towel bars & single shelves in BN and SN, but no train racks. The largest is 8.75" deep, and there are a few double shelves. A train rack is a two-shelf setup, right?

Also fyi, if you are near a RH outlet they have several train racks.

I really appreciate the photos and the suggestions. Monicam, is that the Pottery Barn train rack? Weedyacres, I missed seeing the rack at BB&B...I'm wondering if I could double or triple stack those to create the look I want over the toilet. It sure would save money if I could get it to look good. Hmmm...

monicakm, may I ask about your tv over the tub?

1.) What type of mounting hardware did you use?
2.) What is the size of the TV?
3.) I'm assuming you have a cable line that comes out of the wall right behind the tv?
4.) Did you have any problem passing inspection with electronics within reach of the tub? (or was this a DIY without an inspection?)

Also, is that a Moen Kingsley faucet for your tub?? Looks like the same one I've ordered!

I don't remember the name of the mounting hardware but we bought it at Sam's and it has an integrated leveler. It swivels side to side, up and down and extends.
The TV is a 26" Samsung
We have Directv and yes, there is a cable line coming out of the wall behind the TV.
This was a DIY and we live out in the country...no code.
The faucet is Jado brand.
About the TV. It's no longer there :( Before putting a LCD TV in my bathroom (against DH's wishes), I researched it and found many many people had done the same thing (with no problems). I've seen many of them in Parade/Open homes. I have one of the best home ventilation/exhaust fans you can buy (Panasonic Whisper Warm). First, I felt really guilty for the over indulgence. I didn't watch it that much and the guilt for insisting DH go to the trouble to install it on top of the "excess & vanity" was eating away at me :( Then the remote stopped working. Changed the batteries, called Samsung and they sent out a new remote. Still didn't work. The TV worked but the remote function stopped working. I can't be 100% sure it was a direct result of the steam from my air tub. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. I returned the TV to Amazon. Felt like I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this.

Thanks for the heads-up.. I may have to re-consider. I have a whirlpool tub as opposed to air, so maybe that will help with the steam issue. I appreciate the info!

I have the Mercer rack from PB but it's not hanging yet. It is a lovely piece though.
