You are being very unfair by bouncing the emails back to the sender. Your post saying you are sending yourself emails is proof the sender was a spoofed address. Please do not offend innocent folks by bouncing, they have enough Spam now I suspect. Simply delete the stuff and move on, there is no cure.

You might run a couple of online free scans to satisfy yourself that your own computer is infected. I too occasionally get emails from myself.

Owbist, maybe you misunderstand. The messages that I'm bouncing are spammers who are trying to sell me sex toys or pharmaceuticals. I was getting dozens everyday causing me countless hours of deleting. You think this is fair to me?? Mailwasher has slowed the masses. I will continue to bounce the spammers messages back to them.

No I did not misunderstand Peggy. Did you Google the address you provided in the initial post? Do so and see what it brings - one find, this thread. So what good have you done other than clutter an already cluttered cyberspace?

Getting upset about things that cannot be cured does you no good, and I do understand your frustrations. Anyone with a PC computer connected to the net gets Spam to a varying degree.

As Jean notes above, if your bouncing Spam goes to a spammer then you have given them your IP address

I've been using mailwasher for 2 years now and it has significantly cut down on the amount of spam I get. My husbands (very large) computer company also uses Mailwasher as do other corporations. Before mailwasher DH was getting 100's of spam messages everyday. Now he says he gets less than a dozen.

Mailwasher is stopping the spam. It can do that without bouncing it. When you bounce it it does not get back to the spammer but to an address he has spoofed which may be yours or mine. Bounce it if you must but you should at least inform yourself. Click on and read the 'what is wrong with bouncing spam' on this page.

Peggy, owbist is neither offensive or mean. He was just trying to explain to you that what you were doing was not the right way to go about it. Re-read the way you answered him.....he was just pointing that out to you.

And I can tell you that if you ever posted your email address in a message on a forum, message board, on a web page or even submitting a review about a product where it asks for your email address, you are gona get on a spammers list and a good possibility even your email address will be used for spamming. Forwarding emails with countless email address on them are also a target for spammers. The internet isn't the nice safe pace it use to be a few years back and we all need to be careful of our choices for everyone concerned.

Owbist is good folks. Knows stuff and shares it frequently and selflessly. TS if you think he/she didn't say it just exactly right so your delicate little egotistical toes didn't get stepped on. The info is solid. Suggest you learn from it.

I was not aware that bounced spam does not get back to the spammer but to an address he/she has spoofed. I'm open minded and always willing to learn. I was totally confused by owbist's comments as he assumed I was purposely harassing "innocent strangers." I will now re-think using my spamblocker, thanks to the informative link that Bob posted. How was I to know? I'm not mean-spirited either, as owbist implied. Educate me!

I'm sure owbist is "good folks" but he didn't come across as being a good teacher.

I never forward emails with countless names, chain letters and the like. I delete them. With mailwasher I'm able to preview messages and delete them without opening them.

However just read the last sentence in your third post.

The next post I made was in direct response to that one sentence. I feel very strongly when people bounce emails.

When you go into your spam filter you might try not even looking at the subject title, that way it cannot offend you. You know who your address book includes so any address that is not recognised just delete it. I find I can easily cope with my spam using that method and I do not use any filters.

Yo aka peggy....I was too strong. Sorry for offense given. I apologize.

I've been getting this sort of thing for quite some time....it comes with "my" address, so it comes to me. I can find no way to even put it in my SPAM folder...I "do" have it in my deleted folder, but it still gets "there". I wrote to my tech support for my ISP and have gotten no answer. I go to properties on these e-mails and all it has is "my" address...it is irritating to say the least and I can think of no way around it. As I say, it has "my" address like I was sending something to myself. Any help "here"

Gee, I get very little spam. I get a lot of sales "fliers", but they are from companies I purchase stuff from. Most of the time I delete without reading, other times I read, and some times I even purchase something advertised in the email.

Maybe I'm just lucky, spam hasn't been a problem for me on any of my email addresses, I look after three of them, plus my wife's. I can't remember a single time I got an email from myself or from one of my other addresses.

I guess that's what has protected me from using such tools as were discussed in this thread.

I hope the computer gurus on this forum keep giving free help, I've been the beneficiary many times, and I welcome even short and direct inputs pointing out the errors I am, or may be, making.

Good spammers know where to get good names.
Standard mode of opperation for most providers is to use the username for their web directory & email address are user names. Pretty simple to find those directory trees.

Filters? Mailwashers? Rules? Blocks? Unfortunately nothing at this time defeats spam. We as users can only control it. And I have to say we are our own worst enemy.

As long as we keep opening up those unsolicited e-mails, using our addresses to enroll/sign up for all these unfamiliar sites and free things, posting our addresses indiscriminately all over the Internet, and continue to just be unprotective of our addresses this will continue.

I don't do any of those things, but..unfortunately...I have some friends who have never learned to take the addresses off when forwarding something. I very seldom open a forwarded message, but others do and my address is right there for the world to see. I know..you say to inform these people, but sometimes it is hard to speak up and not hurt feelings
