unsolicited emails

Did anyone else receive emails about joining a "private" Google group gardening discussion? I have one from Google groups and one from an individual. I'm always scared to open any emails from an unknown source and was wondering if anyone else here had checked it out. I would imagine my address was obtained from this site.

BTW the Honey Bunches of Oats is annoying and my pop up blocker won't allow me to hit skip. What's up with that?

No emails here, but coincidentally I was just going to whine about that Honey Bunches thing too! The South Beach atrocity did go away, but this new one is worse - covers the whole screen and with dial up, it takes forever to load to a point of being able to click 'skip'. Grrrrr.....

I haven't received any emails, but you are wise to be careful. I am retired from a career in technology with a software company. I have seen worms and other nuisances launched throughout entire companies because an employee in Europe opened an infected message that grabbed thousands of addresses from that person's address book, which proceeded to infect thousands of machines.

If you don't know the sender, don't open it. I found all my emails from real GW members to be easily identified.

It's sad when people abuse the system, as it only increases the level of distrust. However it's also sad when people substitute paranoia for healthy skepticism and reasonable checking. I occasionally consult the trade lists when I have surplus seeds, seedlings, rooted cuttings, etc. At the moment, my tiny growing space is full. I can't take in new plants, except under exceptional circumstances. I could post an offer of plants or seeds for postage. However, this can become a bit of a free-for-all, and if someone has already indicated they are looking for a plant, I'd rather offer it to them over someone who wants something simply because it is free. An additional consideration is that many of my plants are from the San Francisco area botanical gardens. Many are from unusual environments, such as 10,000 ft in the Andes. Such plants thrive in San Francisco, but will quickly die anywhere zone 9-10 more than 50 miles from the Pacific Ocean. I don't have a big desire to send plants to a certain death. So I pick and choose, and offer things for postage (or rarely for trade). It's always disturbing to run into the attitude "It sounds too good to be true, so it must be a scam." The alternative is to toss things. This is always odd, because a quick check of the Rate and Review would, I expect, eliminate any irrational concerns. I know a lot of people who used to offer things for postage who no longer do. While this is not the problem being addressed here, it does speak to a deterioration in the process. People should be encouraged to use and search the exchange pages, whether they are looking for a trade or for postage. I think many people are unaware of the search engine; I give a link below. Gee, I get very little spam. I get a lot of sales "fliers", but they are from companies I purchase stuff from. Most of the time I delete without reading, other times I read, and some times I even purchase something advertised in the email. Maybe I'm just lucky, spam hasn't been a problem for me on any of my email addresses, I look after three of them, plus my wife's. I can't remember a single time I got an email from myself or from one of my other addresses. I guess that's what has protected me from using such tools as were discussed in this thread. I hope the computer gurus on this forum keep giving free help, I've been the beneficiary many times, and I welcome even short and direct inputs pointing out the errors I am, or may be, making. NJ is finally getting winter today, snow, freezing rain. Newark air port is reporting 7 hour delays, or cancellations, no sun shine for us for a day or two.

2014 January 17 19:11 GMT Cisco Security Intelligence Operations has detected significant activity related to spam email messages that claim to contain a notification to attend a court hearing for the recipient. The text in the email message attempts to convince the recipient to open the attachment for review the details. someone once asked me about this while at one of the swaps. I'm amazed at how "off the radar" I am even though my email address is displayed with my handle anytime I post a comment or response. I never open emails unless I know the sender or recognize them from the subject line, and I never open attachments at home on my personal system. At work we have all the latest infection control solftware and tech support and they seem to stay on top of everything.

I am currently writing gardening articles for a new garden website that sorta operates as an online only gardening magazine. At this point they don't do any of the ads or commercials and hopefully they never will. If this keeps up I will probably limit my time on GardenWeb and spend more of my time over there.
