win98se to ?

I am running win 98 se and as you all know it is no longer supported by windows updates and I was wondering if I should upgrade and to what? The system works fine and I have been comfortable with it for many years,I am running Norton anti virus and personal firewall,also ad aware,spybot,etc and have had no problems,just wondering how long this will last? Thanks.

If you are comfortable with Windows 98 why bother to change? You have no problems at the moment and to buy a copy of Windows XP would seem pointless because when you do buy a new computer it will come with an operating system installed making your purchase of XP obsolete. Save the money unless there is a reason to upgrade to XP.

For sure, and XP, never mind Vista, will overtax the resources of the W98SE machine, I am guessing of course.

I think the bad guys are not targeting W9x any more, there are so few and it becomes not worth their effort, I'm guessing again.

Thanks, Bob, it's still 'Greek' to me. "One could be better, but not necessarily, a big cache could be good but might not be......" DA I don't want to deal with the software problems. It's an office with printers, scanner, optical scanning, word processing and medical software. The medical software has been fixed (this month) to work on Vista. The fellow from the company said if we could get XP, get it. The other computers are all XP and they have to work together. They will share files and the same programs. I don't want to deal with getting the equipment to work or have to buy new hardware. If it were a machine for home use only, I might chance it, but for the office it just will create major headaches. As it is now, our year-old computer came with Office 07. The other machines have Office 03. They do not work well together no matter what balony MS states. When I try to move documents from one machine to another, it messes up the document even though they are saved as .doc. We can't afford to change everything or hire someone to try to get everything to work with each other. The other computers are not old. But they came with XP because MS took forever to release Vista. We needed new machines last year. This is why Dell and Toshiba still sell XP on their business machines. We aren't the only place facing these problems. Thanks for your help, Jane

I think for the SanDisk to work on Win98SE you will need to download a driver and install on the 98 machine. SanDisk Windows 98 Driver Windows Vista has the Easy Transfer Wizard, you can read more about it here As far as transfering from one computer, you'll need a RJ45 connector wire and plug it into the ethernet card on each computer. They do make a Easy Transfer Cable. This is a special USB cable that is designed to work with Windows Vista and Windows Easy Transfer and you just connect USB to USB. Programs usually don't work if you transfer them, they need to be installed from the CD or a setup.exe installer. If you're lucky, the programs may have the setup-installer inside the folder of the program. Who knows whether they will install on Vista because of there age. If they do install and not work, you may be able to right click the program icon and choose compatibly mode for Win98.

It's called Windows Mail in Vista. Look in "all programs" after you hit start and click on it. You'll have to set it up with your new internet provider according to their instructions. I use Yahoo mail and Hotmail and Windows Mail, each serves a different audience when I communicate, one for friends, one for junk and Windows Mail as the default mail program in Vista (cause it won't let me use the others.) I have Vista Home Premium, so Pro may be a little different, but probably not too much. MSFT just came out with SP1 for Vista, so if you have all the right drivers, it will download as an update when you get online. All Vista is, is Win XP with a pretty dress on. As you learn it, you'll see. It's not really different at all, just better looking and things have new names to confuse us. The tutorial that comes with it is good as is the info at the link below. how do i resize a jpeg?

i downloaded irfanview and all plugins. i resized a jpeg and it did it but it uses paintbrush or paint and saves the resized image as a bmp extention not a jpeg. when i tried to upload the resized file it was refused because the file is not valid.... ie not jpeg. :( :( so now i am wondering if i should uninstall this product as it is not doing what i want. IMPORTANT question - when i installed irfanview a window appeared asking about associations. i did not know what to do as all associations were NOT checked and i figured it made sense to use these associations so it knows how to open files with different extentions. so i clicked on select all. the next window then asked, and this is the issue, "You want to change current associations and to associate one or many file types with IrfanView! Are you REALLY sure?" that is an exact quote i did not add ! or caps. so i worried about the current wording and when it capitalized really, well i said no. it accepted that. so i assume i ended up with the same thing as if i did not check select all and left all boxes unchecked. should i have gone with select all and replied yes? i was afraid this might cause conflicts with other programs and their functions. not sure what to do. any suggestions? remember win 98 se did all this in mozilla browser. thanks, tom

For what it's worth, AVG works beautifully on my W98se, and it's never run better than since I took Norton AV out of it. Spywareblaster and AdAware still work, too. I gather there are firewalls available geared to W/98, but someone on the Zonealarm forum told me that even though it won't update any more for W98, the system still works against many threats. I don't claim to be an expert by any means, but I'm not giving up my W98 until I absolutely have to.

I have placed a link below with many tips and tweaks for windows of all flavours, many for W98 and W98SE.

I have tried none of them so cannot say if they are a wise choice but you can take a look and decide for yourself.

From what I've been reading elsewhere, upgrading to Windows 2000 Professional is an option. If you want to keep Win 98, you can get all the win 98se updates from the link below

Download them all to a folder then burn them to a cd for future use. Then run all the updates from the cd
