How to transfer data from 98SE to Vista?

I just purchased a new Dell computer with Vista on it. My old computer has Win 98SE. The Dell salesperson sold me software called IntelliMover 4.5 and assured me it would work on Win 98SE - well, guess what, it doesn't. It only works on 2000 or later.

I have also tried moving some pictures from my old computer to my new by using a SanDisk flash drive, but that won't work on 98SE either.

Also, what about my Quicken 98 and Publisher 2000? I would still like to use these programs, but can I get them transfered or are they too dated to work on Vista?

Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I don't really like Vista - maybe I just need to get used to it????

Regarding your personal data and pictures you should burn them to a CD. This way you not only have the ability to move to the new computer but you also have them backed up in case of problems down the road.

You cannot 'transfer' Quicken or Publisher 2000 but if you have the original CDs then try to install and see where you go. I would be surprised if Quicken will work, Intuit would love to have you buy a new program to enhance their bank balance. But I would certainly give it a try, nothing venture nothing gained.

I think for the SanDisk to work on Win98SE you will need to download a driver and install on the 98 machine. SanDisk Windows 98 Driver
Windows Vista has the Easy Transfer Wizard, you can read more about it here
As far as transfering from one computer, you'll need a RJ45 connector wire and plug it into the ethernet card on each computer. They do make a Easy Transfer Cable. This is a special USB cable that is designed to work with Windows Vista and Windows Easy Transfer and you just connect USB to USB.
Programs usually don't work if you transfer them, they need to be installed from the CD or a setup.exe installer. If you're lucky, the programs may have the setup-installer inside the folder of the program. Who knows whether they will install on Vista because of there age.
If they do install and not work, you may be able to right click the program icon and choose compatibly mode for Win98.

I don't understand why they are read only but if you right click on the file name and choose properties on the context menu then at the bottom of the 'general' tab you can remove the check mark from the read only box.

granms, it took me quite a while to study/read through your posts. I see what you mean and I do know that there is a difference between trying to do a recovery and doing a restore. I am trying to protect myself in case the same thing happens to me as happened to you and when zep mentioned the "Vista installation disk"......well tlhat sounded like something I needed to have. I DO have the Factory recovery disk. I asked for them when I bought my computer from HP, and they were sent with the computer. I also made recovery disk myself, so I have two sets of recovery. Thanks for taking the time and effort in giving so much detail and info in your posting, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has studied it and gotten good information from it.

Hi, I'm new here and hope I can help you out. This is how I retrieved my mail from OE from and old windows program to Windows XP Hopefully it will work for you. Back Up Outlook Express Messages Microsoft stores Outlook Express messages in a subfolder buried deep beneath the Windows folder, where it's nearly impossible to back up. That can mean disaster if you have a disk crash, or if you replace your PC. When you restore your backed-up data files, you discover that your email is gone! Fortunately, Outlook Express 5.5 (included as a component of IE 5.01 with Service Pack 1 and in IE 5.5) allows you to change the default location where messages are stored, making it easier to back them up with your other files. Follow these steps: Open your My Documents folder, right-click on any empty space, and choose New, Folder from the shortcut menu. Because you'll use this new folder to hold your mail messages, give it a descriptive name like My Mail. From the main Outlook Express window, pull down the Tools menu, choose Options, and click the Maintenance tab. Click the Store Folder button. This opens a dialog box that allows you to select the folder where you want Outlook Express messages to be stored. Click the Change button. In the Browse for Folder dialog box, select the folder you created in Step 1 and click OK. Note that the path to your My Mail folder now appears in the Store Location dialog box. Click OK to save this change, and click OK to the warning message that appears next. Close the Options dialog box, and then close and restart Outlook Express. All your message files are now in a convenient location in the My Documents folder. Back up the entire contents of your My Documents folder today and you'll be well protected from data disasters! Now that you have them saved in a new file...... Save on a disc just like you did your other files. In your new computer, Go to OE mail and open... Go to File..Import.. messages Select Program - Example (Microsoft outlook express 6) Specify location - Import from an OE6 store directory Location of messages - Browse to fine your file. there is this awesome little device called the tornado which makes doing that job very easy, you plug into each pc usb port and a split screen comes up for you to just move stuff from which ever one you want to move from or to. I did read it works with 98 with the install of it's driver, it works with out special drivers on all other windows systems. The Tornado Look around for better prices and reviews etc. I know I just saw one this week on a hot prices list for cheaper it may have been at ecost.com. The Tornado File Transfer Micro-Computer W/ FREE PC Eraser - 094922753861 that is it for $15 it looks like. it does say there it is 98 se compatible so you might check their website for info.

Intellimover worked wonders with the Dell computer and 98 SE that I had (briefly)...that is about the only thing that worked. But...it moved all of my settings and pictures..it was wonderful! I had a tech move things from my old 98SE to the computer I now have, and he didn't do nearly as good a job as Intellimover did...I wish I had kept that program when I returned the Dell. Ding dong, the Dell is gone :o)

I'm not familiar with Vista, but it sure did work with XP!

You're going to have to get used to Vista, because it's inevitable, but I can tell you that many older programs don't work with Vista (at least yet), so getting programs transferred or installed may not be entirely productive.

Have you tried emailing photos and documents to yourself and see if they will open under software you already have pre-installed?

Re: Vista being "inevitable": even the bamboo growing on MS's Redmond campus knows just how astoundingly foolish a statement that is............

Vista is just as inevitable as Win95, Win98, ME, XP were. It doesn't mean it's an an endorsement of its wonderfulness ...just that it is going to be in widespread use over the next few years and the majority of people (i.e., those who don't use another OS) are going to see their older MS systems wither as support is removed and manufacturers move on. You can characterize that view as foolish, but I'm not clear why stating the obvious should provoke an arrogant statement.

If you want to convey knowledge, do so. Making cracks only indicates immaturity. Don't bother to respond unless you are interested in being constructive. I'm not interested in further dialogue with you...
