Vista Installation disk - how to make/where to get

I recently had a problem with my pc but thankfully found the problem to be a defective monitor instead of the dreaded system failure black screen.

Here's my question, can I make an installation disk and where can I find out how to do this, or is there a better way.?

No, you cannot make a Vista installation disk. That only comes from Microsoft. Did you make the Vista rescue disks when your computer was new? These are not the same. My HP computer, running XP, has two methods of using the rescue disks. One is a complete format and re-install in which you do lose everything, and the other is a repair re-install which saves your documents and settings.

If you will read my post "Problem Resolved" and also the prior post linked at the end, you will see what happened when I tried to do the Repair install with a XP Pro disk that I was able to borrow.
I ended up using my rescue disks since the attempt at the repair wiped out my hard drive and left it blank.

before you do that have you updated your Vista to the latest service pack? if not do that and try it, that has helped many people who had the earlier versions of vista. have you gone to the manufactures site of the software you are having problems with to see if they provide a vista solution or driver etc which would aid in it working with vista? going backward would be a last option, you mention you have an xp license did it come on a pc? you would be going to a completely different pc and that is not allowed, I would definitely make sure that what you have would be allowed or you may end up not being able to activate it. Definitely make a few good images of the system with Vista on it in case you find you need to go back to Vista that way you will have it exactly as you were before you messed with it. disk imaging software there that is a free imaging program you can use. I am not sure what is built in to Vista for that. Here is a link to a pc magazine article on downgrading How to Downgrade from Vista to XP If you were to go to widows 7 instead which would be going in the right direction there is on certain versions of 7 the option to run xp within 7 so that any programs that run on xp would be able to run within 7 that way as in a virtual machine situation.

check the link for info on that ATI Catalyst. ati2evxx.exe is the ATI External Event Utility for your ATI display drivers. It manages the ATI Hotkey feature. It seems it is really up to the individual user if they want to leave this running on their pc or not. IF it is using a lot of cpu resources and causing problems it can be turned off/disabled. It is mostly for use if you have 2 monitors in use on the one pc, it controls the hotkeys used to switch monitors and other ATI hotkeys. so I would go ahead and let it update since you do have ATI components on your pc, it is likely a real ATI process. You should see it in your task manager if you hit control alt and delete together then look at the list of processes you should see it listed there and you can also look and see how much resources it is using. Hi, my dear friend, very thanks for your reply. actually before formatting the hard disk my software files i.e., .exe files got corrupted every where in the original form as well as in the backup folders in all other 3 partitions i use to keep my same backups. before corrupting the exe files i saw that many of the folders of all 4 partitions where consisting duplicate folder into folder as you go on inside each folder there was an automatic inside folder creating by it self if open the duplicate folder it was hanging my laptop if without opening to that folder i was deleting to such duplicate created folders, this was happening with my laptop so without any suggestions form other i formatted partitions c install fresh window later we can backup in c and then will format the rest of 3 partition but unfortunately i lost all the data what ever the basic procedure is there i followed but i am unable to get my data back

That disc should work. You should actually put the disc in and boot from it to see if it boots and presents the recovery options that it's intended to provide. You can also use a Vista repair disc on a windows 7 machine and a Win 7 repair disc on a Vista machine. All the repair disc does is provide access to recovery options already present on the computer. Those are the same options available if you press the F8 Key during restart. So boot from the disc you made and you should see these options: Start up Repair System Restore System Image Recovery You would need to have a system image somewhere for that option to work. granms, it took me quite a while to study/read through your posts. I see what you mean and I do know that there is a difference between trying to do a recovery and doing a restore. I am trying to protect myself in case the same thing happens to me as happened to you and when zep mentioned the "Vista installation disk"......well tlhat sounded like something I needed to have.

I DO have the Factory recovery disk. I asked for them when I bought my computer from HP, and they were sent with the computer. I also made recovery disk myself, so I have two sets of recovery.

Thanks for taking the time and effort in giving so much detail and info in your posting, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has studied it and gotten good information from it.
