Vista SP1 Disk

I haven't seen it mentioned here so below is a link to another forum I visit from time to time. Included in the thread is information for obtaining a Vista SP1 disk, downloading SP1 to save, and some of the negatives for each method. And finally, because of my antique DUN what I personally did and why.

I had windows update install vista sp1. Forget exact but maybe 80 gb worth of upgrade. Just the other day I downloaded burnt the cd iso of sp1 all language version from download.microsoft.com , its about 550mb. Makes a CD.exe sp1 installer.

Wish I could justify getting a Vista w/SP1 DVD for future use because I tend to reinstall windows from time to time - usually after I screw up something, sometimes reinstalling new is quicker/easier than fixing and better than running the repair install.

When it is free what is there to justify? :)

With an on-line download initially not available and with everything running so well I was hesitant to do anything. A full DVD over-write was not the answer and the veiled caution of installing from a downloaded disk made me hesitate.

I finally went with a direct download which was much smaller than anticipated and so far all is well. I will just save the DVD disk for any future need.

Yes it does, thanks. The only reason why I want to clone it is, firstly, so I can be assured I can access my documents and the programs and downloads I want to keep, I'm fairly fastidious about keeping copies so I should be able to reinstall all the stuff I want to keep, the other reason being I thought I might be able to get around the need for the NT disk, if the installer sees a Win 2k installation on the disk, but I really want to format the new drive and start from scratch, ideally. I would suspect my DVD+-r drive wasn't reading correctly, but the w2k disk seems ok, seeing as my win 95 cd's not being accepted as a valid qualifying disk. It's oem and as far as I can tell, capable of doing a full install, however, I couldn't even swap out the existing hard drive and install w95 on the new hard drive, it wasn't seeing it as a valid disk or some such. When you're suggesting I run SFC, do you mean boot from the w2k disk? If I do, there doesn't seem to be a lot of options apart from the installer, can I get to a dos prompt on the w2k disk?

RC, I have rebooted my pc many times over several months, the open disks have been there several months but nothing I have been able to do has gotten them to close. Yes i did go into 'my computer' and click directly on each drive letter and tried to close from there but i get this Yellow Triangle ERROR alert titled PROBLEM EJECTING USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE, In the error box it says "windows cannot stop your MS/MS-Pro USB Device because a program is still using it". But I am not using any of them. None of the usb ports that I am referring to have anything plugged into them.

A Sandisk that connects by USB works just fine for your reset disk. Mine cost about $20.00 and I've had it for a long time. If you should Format your hard drive than you will need to update your Reset Disk. If you change your password your Reset Disk will still work without resetting it. If you normally don't use a password you will need to create a password before your computer will allow you to make a Reset Disk. The password can be removed and anyone does put a password in your computer without your knowledge your Reset Disk will allow you in to set a new password. This keeps other from blocking you from using your own PC. I helped someone who had this very same problem.

Your Toshiba should have come with recovery Cd's or DVDs and will allow you to reinstall the system very easy back to just like factory new should something go drastically wrong. Plus you should be able to load individual componente too - when you start it you will have some options on what do you want to do. My Toshiba with Vista has the Recovery Environment and all needed windows files/drivers on a hidden drive partition and amazingly when you really screw up something to a non start-able state the Toshiba will automatically fix the boot/startup process without you needing to do a thing, for many if not 'almost' all startup problems. Plus on F8 window you should see 'Repair my PC' which runs the automatic startup fixit which checks things and fixes. Of course if you lose hard drive access and then it would be nice to have that bootable CD ravencraven linked to burn the recovery environment to CD/DVD so you can hopefully fix things, should you delete your boot-loader or something that makes the hdd lost.

The DVD came yesterday (Friday) free of charge. It is a full version Vista Home Premium 32 bit with SP1. It has a key code. My plan is to just save it for a time when I might need it. Hopefully I won't.
