how do i resize a jpeg?

this is for creating an avatar. since there are limits on pixel size for an avatar i have had to resize a photo i got off the internet when i wanted to use it as an avatar.

now at work i think the os was xpert pro and i knew how to do it using that os but that's immaterial. at home the os is windows 98 second edition. does anyone know how to resize a photo in win 98 se? i have looked at the various installed programs to no avail. i used help but there is no mention of resize.

You can run Paint, it might be called MSpaint. Then from one of the menu items, probably Image, choose Stretch then set the percentages to something like 50% on both vertical and horizontal.

You may have to install it from Windows components in add/remove programs.

Or you could download and install a small graphics editor program like IfranView , which is popular.

I would go with Mikie's suggestion about d'l IrfanView. I used it for years on my 98se machine and it's also on the new computer. Be sure to also d/l the plugins.... it's a quick and easy program.

In your scanner software, after you're done with any tweaking.... In one of the menu drop-downs, do you have "Save" or "Save As..."? This is probably how to change the format it is saved in. Tif is probably the default unless you specifically tell it to save as something different. In the owner's manual, is there any sections along the lines of "saving scanned images"? There is probably info at the HP website as well.

I am not a photo aficionado, but I do use Picasa along with Irfanview. In the few issues that I needed help with Picasa I found their Help file user friendly. It is actually on-line with the Toolbar entry only a portal to it. In your case, it took me all of three clicks of the mouse to find the answer to your question. When you have time you may want to visit the site and become familiar with it so it can help you when you need quick answers. DA

brugloversz9, I downloaded the 300 dpi file from your link to see what the picture trail was providing. The image is 300 dpi, but the document size is only 1.75" x 1.33." I've been Googling about, because it's such a nice image and I have a feeling there must be a print or poster somewhere. I found an artist named Jacqueline Osborne, whose painting "Afternoon on the Boardwalk," is eerily familiar, except the women have been rearranged and now they're dressed in black! Even the shoes are the same. I also found a site where a craftsperson was showing some stamping she'd done on a notecard of our original colorful five ladies. They're out there somewhere.... Selecting the code... Click in the box that has the "HTML Code". If it doesn't highlight the entire box with the code, then you want to do a "select all" I don't know how you do this on a Mac, but don't you do this for other things? For non-Apple machines, press & hold the "Ctrl" key and press the "A" key. With a Mack, try the same thing except use the "apple" key instead of the "Ctrl" key. If "select all" doesn't work for you, then try manually selecting everything in the "HTML Code" box with your mouse by clicking the mouse where you want to start the selection and, while holding it down, dragging it to the end of what you want to select. Then, release the mouse and the section you just selected should be highlighted. In this case, you want to select everything in that box. Copying the code... Once you've selected the "HTML Code", either ...Right-click in the box and select the "Copy" option or ...Press and hold the "Ctrl" key and then press the "C" key (again, substituting the "apple" key for the "Ctrl" key might work, I'm not sure) Pasting the code into the Message box... Once you've copied the "HTML Code", go to the place in the Message box you want to put your picture. If you have Microsoft Office (97 to XP) installed, you should have Microsoft Photo Editor. In this, you can specify the pixel size, and resize accordingly.

Or you can upload a pic to Flickr, double click on it and it shows in full size. If you look above the full size picture there is an "All Sizes" button, click it and you size your pic, download it to where ever you want it etc., very easy and free.

meggypeggy i have Word 2000 but there is no ms photo editor. i do have instruction on how to use it from work. i don't know if i used it at work then used a different method at work when i got a new pc with a different os. i have directions for both ms photo editor and another method in a book i left in work. i don't know if i removed ms photo editor from my home pc when i looked for programs to remove to help speed this old pc up 10 days ago. should i have ms photo editor with Word 2000?

i downloaded irfanview and all plugins.

i resized a jpeg and it did it but it uses paintbrush or paint and saves the resized image as a bmp extention not a jpeg. when i tried to upload the resized file it was refused because the file is not valid.... ie not jpeg. :( :(

so now i am wondering if i should uninstall this product as it is not doing what i want.

IMPORTANT question -
when i installed irfanview a window appeared asking about associations. i did not know what to do as all associations were NOT checked and i figured it made sense to use these associations so it knows how to open files with different extentions. so i clicked on select all. the next window then asked, and this is the issue, "You want to change current associations and to associate one or many file types with IrfanView! Are you REALLY sure?" that is an exact quote i did not add ! or caps. so i worried about the current wording and when it capitalized really, well i said no. it accepted that. so i assume i ended up with the same thing as if i did not check select all and left all boxes unchecked. should i have gone with select all and replied yes? i was afraid this might cause conflicts with other programs and their functions.

not sure what to do. any suggestions? remember win 98 se did all this in mozilla browser.

ok i realized that if i saved as JPEG it is a jpeg and should upload as an avatar. so i resolved that part. the rest still applies.

I have used Irfanview for a long time. I do not have any files associated with it. It will open any supported file and save it in any supported format. I find it very useful for resizing images and wish that all who post images would consider resizing any image over 100 KB for the sake of dial up users. When it is not associated with the extension it will not open the image if you double click on it, but you can right click on the image and use 'open' with to open the image or you can open Irfanview and use file > open to open an image.

Like Bob I do not allow any associations in Irfanview. For me this is because I use Corel PhotoPaint mostly. Irfanview is a great little program, I use it to resize and rename batches of photos so I can use them on my wife's web site.

When you have a few minutes of idle time open Irfanview and play around a bit, you will soon get the hang of it and start to feel comfortable. Start by opening then renaming and saving a photo so you do not mess the original picture up then play.
