How do I change photos to a jpeg?

Sometimes pictures that I get sent from a friend's camera, or pictures in an email are in a jfif format, which won't allow us to post here. Only jpegs post.

I tried saving as, or opening with, but neither give me the jpeg options. Any ideas?

Right click get to "save as ", click on it, then where you usually choose where the pic is to be stored there is a drop down arrow on the right, click it..there may be an option fpr jpg. The other way is to take a snip of it. Search 'snipping tool' in your computer...they are all saved as jpgs.

Arcy, the only thing in the drop down is the jfif, which it is currently. That was the first thing I checked for.

I'll try the snipping option.

turns out there is an application that you download and it automatically places pics in My photos and photobucket pics them up in seconds..so it was easily done. :) Yes I could have gotten a memory chip for my phone but you still have to stop and put the pic into that chip...at least it doesn't do it automatically on this phone. So be sure that the chip phone you get does it auto. I am glad I figured out a way to do mine very easily. :)

Adding to DA's comment -- I too found the Arcsoft site which used/uses .phb files that may be album files. Here's a quote from Arcsoft: PHB files are proprietary album files used by some of our programs, namely PhotoBase. Albums do not store your images. They serve as links to files stored on your computer or removable drive. If you delete the original file, the thumbnail in the album basically becomes a dead link. For example, if you have files on a floppy disk and create an album, you'll always need to have that floppy in the drive whenever you want to view the full images. Likewise, if you have a digital camera that is read as a removable drive, you would need to have it connected if you create the album directly from the camera. The best thing to do is copy all of your images into a folder on your computer, *then* create the album referencing those files. Albums are useful because they let you preview and organize files on your system in a convenient fashion. It is also from albums that slide shows are made with some of our programs." They still offer ($) software that may be able to translate your pics to jpeg or they have some free help. Some of their software can be downloaded for trials which might enable copying to jpeg. What email program are you using? Quite a few email programs place limits on the total size of attachments that can accompany a single message. If you are sending a lot of pictures, particularly ones that are right off your digital camera without reducing them in size, you could be easily bumping up against that. Unless the person on the other end actually needs the original size files (like there is a need to do some Photoshop work on them), you can easily reduce the file sizes substantially and they will look just as good displayed on the computer screen at the other end. In my case, I use Hotmail, which has an attachment limit of 10MB total. A typical digital picture I take is usually about 2 MB or so in size, which means that I can only send about 4-5 of these pictures at a time. But I almost always reduce such photos to about 100-150 Kb each, which means that I can attach up to about 80 of them at a time.

Have your daughter send you the photo again as it came straight out of the camera and try to figure out what the resolution is. It will be a large file unless she used a smaller option in her camera menu and depending on what mp camera she used. If it is too large, it might not go through email, depends on just how large. If she took the photo at one of the smaller sizes/low resolution, you are pretty much stuck. If the data isn't there, it just isn't there. Large photos sometimes can't make it through emails, so you either have to post them on a hosting site for download or use Yousendit which is supposed to be pretty reliable. Until you figure out how to get them to save with the proper extension, perhaps you could manually change the jfif extension to jpg (or jpeg).

Download free Irfan View. I've used it for years to change my pics to JPG. You can highlight a whole mess of pics and it will convert them all.

What I have been doing in those cases is in the photos click on the picture, in the options select edit, and then just slightly crop it or do any type of edit to the picture. Then save the changes. It will save the new version as a jpg file. It works great on my android phone.

If I understand correctly...

The only difference between a .jfif and a .jpg is the extension. Sort of like a .jpg is the same as a .jpeg.

No conversion is needed. Or desired since you can lose resolution unnecessarily.

On the left is a sample .jfif image. On the right is a copy of the same image with the extension changed to .jpg.

The image on the left is not accepted by the gardenweb uploader. The image on the right is accepted. The only thing changed is the extension.

The .jfif image uploads fine after the extension changed to .jpg:

One easy way is to use the Snipping Tool to capture the image; then go to File, Save As, and at the bottom of the box, click on JPEG.

I'm not sure what the Snipping Tool is -- is that Print Screen? that would be an easy way to do it -- the PrtSc button at the upper right of the keyboard. Paste it into the paint program -- you can actually paste it right into an email if you want to send it to someone.

I use FastStone Image Viewer, which is free, but I donated $15 to them because I like the program so much. I used to use Irfanview, but I like FastStone better. Before that I used ACDSee, and I received a disc for that program with a scanner I bought decades ago. I still use it, but it is a bit out of date compated to FastStone.

Ashampoo Photo Commander is a good free program that allows limited editing of photos, but is good for cropping. Since I have Photoshop, I do not need this program, however.
