I finally got around to downloading Open Office, on your recommendation. THANKS I LOVE IT! Although I haven't used it a whole lot yet, I tested some files and they all work :)

Good luck, I've use Open Office for all my work communications since the beginning of 2004. There have been several updates of Open Office during that time.

I have regular interactions with colleagues using MS Office: mostly Word and some Powerpoint, and expense reports via Excel. The only real problem I have is when I forget to save in the MS Office format. If I sent in the Open Office format they can't open it. Its a one way, Open Office works with about everything, MS works only with the current version of MS. Open Office can even import old Word (pre-Office) formats.

I just removed OO from my computer - almost solely because I wasn't using it. I'm still using MS Office 2002 and it is okay for my needs. I found about 30,000 *.png files that I believe were connected with OO. At first I was alarmed at the number but after checking, found that they were essentially probably harmless ranging in the size of 1-5 kb. I did not check to see if the number resulting from having OO was increasing as a result of using it or whether the number was solely the result of the initial OO download and subsequent updates. I determined the number of OO *.png files after removing OO (original number 39,000 plus less OO removal = about 9,700 remainder). I would probably return to OO when or if my MS Office 2002 gives me a problem.

I think I am giving up for today. I have spent hours reading the links, and previous posts that I found in the search for OOo, supposedly installed Works Converter, which I can't find on here, just the installer, but when I open the installer it says it's already installed and all I can do is remove or repair the installation. Guess the only other thing I can do is go back to the old computer and try to convert the files there, then recopy them to this computer, but I'm done for today. Marie, thanks, but that only takes care of the one file, not all my patterns and such that have been typed in, or my trip journals, ect. Thanks for trying to help me. Tami

azinoh, I haven't thought about stamp collecting for 50 years, but I'm sure you too remember a little about it. Collectors generally placed their stamps in locations representing the stamps in printed books/binders. I had never heard of Linns either although when young I actually subscribed to a similar weekly newsletter. Anyway it looks like in the modern world, one could print their own 'stamp album' perhaps updating the needed pages yearly or perhaps specifically labeling the acquired stamps only in a notated binder(losing the depressed feeling of having mostly empty or sparsely filled pages). Sounds like a good idea to me. I don't know why one couldn't use microsoft units, but obviously it would be nice to be able to use free programs as well.

I hear you, damccoy....my memory is NOT what it used to be either and my attitude is NOT what it used to be either. I find myself "cranky" about having to spend my valuable time learning something new when what I was doing was perfectly fine and suited my needs. AND I would really prefer spending my time doing something else more fun...like quilting or sewing or reading on my kindle or gardening or scrapbooking or cooking or most anything than sitting in front of a computer screen. If you're writing simple .docs and working simple spreadsheets, OO will be just fine. If you use any advanced features in Office, you may have to relearn how to perform the same operations in OO. If you are sharing files with other Office users, you'll have to remember to save your files in MS format instead of the default Open format. Nothing to lose by giving it a test drive.
