Software program OpenOffice.org????

In my stamp magazine from Linn's, their is a article about this program for making your own pages for stamps. When I went to it it seems to be for a variety of things.
Anyone use it or is familiar with it?

I have Open Office...but I don't know what "Linn's" is...and I absolutely/positively do not understand the meaning of "making your own pages for stamps". I have a sinking feeling that I'm going to be sorry I asked.

I'm not using it right now but have in the past. It's an office program of the same sort as Microsoft Office. It has a module called writer which is like Word, one called Calc which is like Excel, etc. Often recommended in this forum for people who don't want to buy Microsoft Office but need a similar program.

I Have tried all of the above except List Pro from Illium. I worked with Janet in the past on Version 2.4. She did not wish to use my changes. She had a person who grew daylilies helping her. Many of the fields have little to do with iris. I now use Database Oasis http://databaseoasis.com/. I has been great I have multiple databases. There is not limit. With a little computer knowledge you can make up your own. Very easy to use. I have one for Iris I grow ( with bed location), Seedlings. Where I have guest iris at and when sent. Plus ones for medications , passwords and recipes. It is the best money I have ever spent on software. You can have multiple photos of each iris Use any font on your computer. Different color back grounds. You can also import templates from other Database Oasis. E-mail me and I can send my template for my Iris I Grow one. I think I am giving up for today. I have spent hours reading the links, and previous posts that I found in the search for OOo, supposedly installed Works Converter, which I can't find on here, just the installer, but when I open the installer it says it's already installed and all I can do is remove or repair the installation. Guess the only other thing I can do is go back to the old computer and try to convert the files there, then recopy them to this computer, but I'm done for today. Marie, thanks, but that only takes care of the one file, not all my patterns and such that have been typed in, or my trip journals, ect. Thanks for trying to help me. Tami

Yes, you just have to hunt for it. I've linked to a couple where you can use your own photo. (Were it me I'd select a checkerboard floor pattern, whether linoleum or tile, and use that to see how you like it.) I've used this kind of software eons ago, the best thing you can do is start with a good photo of your kitchen. Straight on view (not from a side angle). No tilt to your pic, plenty of natural light, bright and crisp. Otherwise you'll get a funky end result. Oh, and check with major flooring manufacturers (Shaw, Mannington, etc.). Pretty sure the one I used is a freebie Mannington lets you download to your PC. You might not be using virtual paint, but I'd bet you can get a pretty close idea of what works & doesn't by using their floor colors and pattens in your room. Start with your own good photo. Then via Google images search for a floor ("black and white checkerboard floor"). Once you find an image of the floor style you're going for save it to your PC. Have both your own pic & sample pic open in your photo editor. (You might have to resize one or the other, both photos should be the same size so the floor pattern isn't too tiny or too huge in your photo.) Then in your room photo, use the Select tool and outline your floor area. Jump over to the sample floor picture that you like and select a comparable size area. Then Copy the sample flooring section, go to your photo and 'choose Paste into selection'. Your editor might have a different command, but you want to paste to selection (your outlined floor) otherwise it will paste over the entire photo or go haywire somehow. ;) Every photo edit is similar but different, so the commands are there, it's just a matter of finding them. I have it on all of my computers, it is a replacement for microsoft office. I am not familiar with what you want to use it for. You can make documents, spreadsheets, etc that you use any office suite for.
It is an excellent program and free.

There is a minor learning curve, but it is so simple even I can do it. Since I do bring work home with me on occasion I have it on my system just in case my Office Enterprise fails for some reason. You never know until you need to use it.

azinoh, I haven't thought about stamp collecting for 50 years, but I'm sure you too remember a little about it. Collectors generally placed their stamps in locations representing the stamps in printed books/binders. I had never heard of Linns either although when young I actually subscribed to a similar weekly newsletter. Anyway it looks like in the modern world, one could print their own 'stamp album' perhaps updating the needed pages yearly or perhaps specifically labeling the acquired stamps only in a notated binder(losing the depressed feeling of having mostly empty or sparsely filled pages). Sounds like a good idea to me. I don't know why one couldn't use microsoft units, but obviously it would be nice to be able to use free programs as well.

I've used OpenOffice for a few years now and it works well. The price is certainly right! ;)

I wouldn't mind switching to OpenOffice (or LibreOffice) in the future -- i.e. on my next computer -- if either of them came with a decent email client like MS Office's Outlook, which is the office program I use the most. But from what I can see, neither includes one. So that's one difference to keep in mind I guess.

When using OO my hardest thing to remember is to save an original document in .doc format rather than the default OO format of .odt.

You can either remember to use File, Save As , as your default savings step, or go to Tools, Options, Load/Save, where you can change the default file format setting to .doc.
