Open Office.org3 ???

I am getting very frustrated with my new laptop. I had Microsoft WORKS, not WORD on my old laptop. The only verson of Word that we had was a 2003 version on my DH's old laptop, which I could probably install on my old one, then copy and paste everything to a word doc, but I don't want to if I don't have to. So, I installed Open Office.org3 on the new one, thinking I would be able to open the old WORKS documents in that, and go from there. I can't find any file type to open a .wps file, which is what Works saves the files as. Can anyone here help me, or should I just install the old word 2003 program on my old laptop, and copy and paste my gazillion files to Word, then go buy a new version of Word Home and Student to use the copied files on?

Thanks. I have tried reading the user guide from open office, but I am just getting more confused.

How to Open WPS Files in Open Office

Let us know if that works or helps.

Here is a link that might be useful: WPS Files in Open Office

Zep, I am really trying! LOL! I can open the Writer part of OOo.3, click on the file I want to open and convert, but there is no option for a .wps file. The instructions you linked to say to scroll down and select "WPS 2000/Office 1.0 (*.wps)". There is no such selection that I can find.

Also, I know I have more than just my Birthdays and Anniversary list saved as a .wps file, but those are the only ones that show up to open when I select files to open.

there is a difference between windows messenger and msn messenger, I would guess what you have a user name and password for is the msn messenger. Windows messenger is nothing but trouble and I always do what zep said and disable it on every pc, it has proved to be a security risk in the past. Do you by any chance use msn as your ISP or use msn browser or anything to do with msn? If so it will have that msn messenger icon down there along with the butterfly, the IM messenger part is a part of msn and unfortunately stays there even when turned off.

i finally installed oo 3.1 and it was able to open the spreadsheet. now getting 3.1 and getting it to work, well if you are interested that was a real interesting adventure! in case this helps anyone else i'll copy and paste it here. i posted this at the oo bullentin board, see link below. this is the final resolution: this is going to be difficult to explain but i have solved the problem and i have to admit i am impressed that i was able to do this! here's what i did after i posted this - 1st, instead of going to the web i opted to open an application i had. i clicked on oo 2.4 and it opened a window. from there i clicked on a link to do the download, 150 mb! it took about 45 minutes. but i still had ver 2.4. i realized i had to open the installation file that mozilla was showing me and when i double clicked the downloaded .exe or php file it started the install and i knew i was on the right track. that took a good 20 minutes and i told it to remove the 2.4 stuff. when done the icon for oo 3.1 writer on my task bar did not work! there are now 4 icons the 3.1 version put on my desktop. only the "oo org" 3.1 icon would launch oo and it was 3.1 so i could now use oo. but the other icons for impress, calc, writer and the task bar icon for writer all failed to work, they'd launch a window saying that it could not find "swriter.exe", trust me this is pretty confusing stuff for me! so i could get to oo 3.1 but only using the icon for "oo org" 3.1 so i right clicked the 3 icons that gave the swriter.exe error and looked at the properties. all 3 were going to C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice.org 2.4\program which shouldn't exist as i told it to remove the 2.4 software but it did not put the correct target address for the 3.1 programs and i recognized this as screwy. i looked at the properties for the 1 icon that would launch oo 3.1 and the target was exactly the same as the 3 icon's targets that were 2.4 but it had 3 in the address - C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice.org 3\program\swriter.exe so i changed the target in the icons that generated the can't find swriter.exe error. by doing that the 3 icons on the desktop went from being a white backround to bright colors and a larger icon! low and behold when i click on those 3 and the icon for the writer on the task bar each one launches the correct software! like i said, i am impressed i found this and was able to fix it, i can't imagine anyone would figure this out it just seems too cryptic! heck i even was able to open the spread sheet that started all this! i hate messing with stuff, i want it to work. i am not all that pc literate and i worry that if i change anything i'll mess something up. i have to admit this was NOT easy to do. oo does NOT provide a correct download/installation. if this happened to me it must be happening to everyone. so not only did this process fail to remove some 2.4 files but it loaded the incorrect target address for 3 icons (using the C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice.org 2.4\program\swriter.exe address)! makes me wonder..... Yeah, E How site is not always spot on. I will look around though. Others here are more familiar with this then me. So hang on for a bit.

I will do another Google search for How to open .wps file open office there may be a better explanation.

If I remember right we just tried to help someone with this same problem?? I believe for OO there is a special add on for it to do those file types. Do a search here because I posted on that thread what seemed to be a solution.

A basic Google search using the keywords "open office wps" (sans quotes) reports a lot of information that may resolve your concern. Some of the answers may be version unique so after reviewing them you may consider re-Googling using the above, but with a "3" (sans quotes)added.

In the mean time if something is currently critical in nature to you it appears you can convert a .wps file to .doc files on zamzar.com

I think I am giving up for today. I have spent hours reading the links, and previous posts that I found in the search for OOo, supposedly installed Works Converter, which I can't find on here, just the installer, but when I open the installer it says it's already installed and all I can do is remove or repair the installation. Guess the only other thing I can do is go back to the old computer and try to convert the files there, then recopy them to this computer, but I'm done for today.

Marie, thanks, but that only takes care of the one file, not all my patterns and such that have been typed in, or my trip journals, ect.

Thanks for trying to help me.

Did you install the converter for OO or Word? You won't see the converter. It's installed in OO or Word. If word go to this page and scroll down to Method 2. It tells you step by step what to do. If OO it probably works the same way.

You can open .WPS in the Word stand alone reader, which you can find for free at microsoft. Then copy/paste the .wps into your Open Office write.

Well, I probably did what Bob414 said and it's on Word. I am just getting moving for today, and won't be doing anything more than I did yesterday, so I may keep trying. Between this and Norton, I'm really seeing Greek. I emailed NOrton about using my existing subscription with the new computer, having 8 months and another 1 yr subscription on the current one. Supposedly gave me instructions on taking it off the old one and putting on here, but didn't address my ? on getting this one to accept an older version of it. Will be emailing them again. Still have 29 days on the trial version that came with this computer.

When I found out Works was being phased out I bought Office. It converted my works documents but not the data base documents and someone in here recommended a converter that worked for that.

You could consider installing a free Anti Virus program on that computer. If that's what you decide I'd start a new topic on the subject. Members will provide help on doing that.

Did you computer come with Office 2010 Starter? I understand that this is not a trial version that will expire, but a limited version of Office with Word and Excel. It should work for most basic Word and Excel functions.
