msconfig startup

I went into msconfig on MY (not my sons) computer & found a lot. I unchecked ones I was sure of & rebooted. I got a message & had to undo it. How do I disable them & which ones can be safely disabled..They can be turned on again if needed (I think)I don't know what a lot is like soundman.

you will always get that message when you reboot once you have altered msconfig simply put a check mark in the box as zep said that says do not show this and go on. Each time you change something it will again give that message does not mean anything is wrong.

xmlparse.dll is a module that contains XML parser functions used by the Yahoo! Instant Messenger,AIM or ICQ. should have absolutely nothing to do with your printer. If you want to go back to the way it was before you did these changes I think I would do a simple system restore to the time before you added the flat bed scanner to the system. That way you would have it all back to how it was working properly then we could start doing some step by step trials. It is really important when making changes to your pc to remember to create new restore points prior to doing them so that if you need to revert back you can simply go to that restore point. So what date was it you added the flat bed scanner to the pc? Go to Start> all programs> accessories> system tools> system restore and from the calendar select a bold date that corresponds to a date and time prior to doing that and choose that date to restore to. This is easily reversible and will not do anything except change the pc back to the settings it had on that day. Here is a guide System Restore

I didn't know of that update. Downloaded it but it doesn't install. ???!!! My original was 8.0 already on the machine. I had previusly updated that to 8.5. Uninstalled that. Got a new disk with 8.5 and installed that. Perhaps it doesn't need that update (KB9338288). ================================================== AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Got it!!!!! I finally realized the uninstall process was not removing the Calendar file with my input info. Also that the new install must have been picking it up. I finally found it and deleted it separately. Perhaps renaming it would have also worked. Then did a complete new install off the CD. All the SS and DS files function properly as well. That file is Mswkscal.wcd located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Works I just tried it out and the wkcalrem item is back in the System Config Utility =============================== My event viewer shows this all started on April 13. Only 6 days to figure it out. Not too bad. :-)

you can look any of those up on google and find what type of process they are. ypager is yahoo messenger ctfmon= When you run a Microsoft Office XP program, the file Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon) runs in the background, even after you quit all Office programs. Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies. qtask.exe is a feature from Quicken which displays desktop alerts and tasks. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference. I will include a link to a process library you can save that link and look any process up there in the future. One assumes the anti virus is up to date and working. What if any anti malware programs do you have installed and have you updated and ran them lately? If it is nothing to do with malware then have you ever looked inside the tower? At 3 years old there could be a considerable dust build up causing the computer of over heat. Is the tower on the floor? If so raise it up about 6 inches as all the dust in a home falls to the floor where the fan can suck it into your tower. Try shutting down, remove the power cord from the rear of the tower and remove the left side. Looking inside you can see if the dust has built up especially under the fan on the motherboard. This is the CPU or processor cooling fan and it is critical that this be kept clean. You can remove the dust with a small pure bristle painters brush (home decor, not artist brush, about half inch would be good) or you can buy a can of compressed air. If you use the compressed air be sure to place your finger on the fan to stop it spinning wildly out of control.

I would have taken the wireless off as I won't ever use it on this computer. There is wireless in the dorms right across the street but the person under me can't get it so figure I couldn't either.. besides I don't want it. I live on Faultner University campus. It is pretty neat living on a campus.

How do I get rid of windows messenger that is on the taskbar?

How do I disable Windows Messenger?

In Windows XP:

(1) Select "Start"
(2) Choose "Control Panel"
(3) Choose "Administrative Tools"
** note in Windows XP Home edition, Admistrative Tools is in Performance and Maintence
(4) Choose "Services"
(5) Right-click on "Messenger"
(6) Select "Stop"
To permanently disable Messenger:
(7) Right click "Messenger"
(8) Select "Properties"
(9) Change "Startup Type" to "Disabled" and click "OK"

It says it is disabled so will let it go at that.. don't like to mess around too much. It is in my taskbar but shows disabled there. I never use it but mite one day. I don't even remember my username or password.

there is a difference between windows messenger and msn messenger, I would guess what you have a user name and password for is the msn messenger. Windows messenger is nothing but trouble and I always do what zep said and disable it on every pc, it has proved to be a security risk in the past.

Do you by any chance use msn as your ISP or use msn browser or anything to do with msn? If so it will have that msn messenger icon down there along with the butterfly, the IM messenger part is a part of msn and unfortunately stays there even when turned off.
