McAfee & other issues

Hi, need some help here. I just bought a Dell Inspiron notebook. Came with windows vista and naturally the auto updates wanted to install SP1. Well it would not install. I contacted MS and the tech told me to disable anti virus. HOW? My anti virus on my desktop can be easily disabled by right clicking the icon in the tray then chose exit. Not with McAfee, no such option. I have searched through and can not find how to disable it for some downloads. I have McAfee Security V8.1, I think, if I am understanding correctly.Do I have to go in and disable all componets in order to shut it down? Or should I just forget Vista SP1?

Try disabling McAfee from Start>
Run> msconfig> Startup tab.

one of the easiest ways to do those types of installs is to do them in safe mode that way all those items are not started up so you know you are doing it with no apps running. Vista sp1 and also xp sp3 are both recommended to be done in safe mode for those reasons, you don't have to worry then about how to disable anything it already is.
You can also do as genes said above, then be sure to remember to go back and turn it back on at startup.

to do the install of vista sp1 in safe mode you will need to go to the actual page that has the sp1 stand alone download and download it and save it to your pc, then reboot into safe mode and go to that file you saved and run it from safe mode.
How to start Vista in Safe Mode:

Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language ...

you can get the standalone vista sp1 from that link above, just use it instead of using the windows updates.

it is of course totally up to you if you want to install sp1 now or wait a while.

That was the first anti virus I used, I was new to computers so I can't judge how well it worked. It was very hard to update and expensive. When I started posting in here I found out about free software and used AVG, then Avast until they became a problem. They both did their job well, just had to many false positives and conflicts with other software. Now I use MS Security Essentials and have not had any problems with it like I did the others.

Avast is a very good Anti virus program but nothing more. I use it on one confuser. For spy wares you should consider AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy and Spywareblaster. These are not the only ones there are others as good but these three generally get all the good comments and are recommended often even on this site. Personally I run all 3 on all 3 of my machines. I look for updates once a week generally unless I see an update notice posted on another site I belong to. If I have been sensibly surfing then I will run them every 6 to 8 weeks. If I have wandered into doubtful sites (looking for free clipart, fonts or other freebies) then I will run them that night to rid myself of the phone home spies that will have inevitably appeared on my computer.

Why not try an online scan with McAfee, Symantec, Bitdefender or one of the many others out there offering a free scan. Supernatispyware would be a usefull alternative too. Sometimes it is an advantage having Trojans found and removed, it gives the user confidence that their security choices are working. It often also heightens awareness so greater attention is paid to maintaining a clean machine.

that it the general suggestion on the McAfee forum is to just take it all out and re-install it. Usually that does fix it. I used McAfee for many many years because it comes free with my Verizon fios, but recently removed it from my pc and it was like a new machine once I had it all removed, many of the very quirky things that had been happening quit happening, the slow to start up and lock up on shutdown all quit, I would have never guessed that McAfee was what was causing it all. Some times free just ain't worth it LOL I still have free now but it is AVAST free. I do have the site advisor on all my browsers along with WOT I like both of them.
