Program in Start-up - Quicken

I just installed Quicken 2014 to try and organize my finances. I am using an XP desktop.

Since I installed, I notice my computer is slower starting up and I've had a few freezes. When I checked Task Manager, I noticed Quicken is running at start-up. Since this is a large program, I don't want it running all the time. I hate these programs which put themselves in start-up.

Usually there is someway, on the program to not allow it in start-up but I can't find anything. I even went to their website and can't find anything. I know I can stop it in Services, but would prefer to do it through the program.

Would prefer to run it manually like my other programs. This one seems hidden. Hoping there is someone else who uses this program and can lead me.

Forgot to mention, I tried Goggling, but the only thing I can find is to use misconfig. The info from Intuit does not address the program automatically starting.

Jane if you use Ccleaner you can perhaps stop it there.

Open Ccleaner, click Tools on the left side then click Start up.

Look around the various tabs to find your Quicken demon.

1. Contact your local office of the Pennsylvania State University USDA Cooperative Extension Service about having a good, reliable soil test done. 2. If your soil is compacted, core aerate. 3. If needed, according to the soil test, spread lime. 4. Right now do not worry about the crabgrass which is an annual and will be dying soon anyway. 5. Do not worry about the White Dutch Clover which is adding needed Nitrogen to your soil. WDC is a good thing to have in an organic lawn. 6. Rototilling is a lot of hard work and may not be necessary. Spread Compost over the lawn, not too thickly, now and let the soil bacteria work it in for you. Those "weeds" that concern you will by dying for the winter soon anyway and this will give you, and your grass, a chance to fill in where those "weeds" grew. 7. Keep your lawn mowed. High, to a point, is better since that gives more leaf blade a chance to utilize more sunlight to manufacture necessary nutrients to feed the grass crown which will then send out more grass blades to absorb more sunlight. 8. Water, as needed. Every where you go people will tell you that your lawn will need 1 inch of water per week. that depends on the weather. Hot, dry, and windy weather will mean a lawn needs more water than that and cool, cloudy, calm weather can mean a lawn needs less water. 9. Overseeding is most often not necessary since a lawn properly cared for will grow and fill in faster than new seeds can germinate and grow. About the only people that will tell you that you do need to overseed are those with grass seed to sell. Mulch mow. The grass clippings can be a source of nutrients for your lawn, up to 1/2 the annual nutrient requirments of your lawn. Lawn clippings do not contribute to thatch buildup in the lawn, that is from improper fertilizing, applying too much weed killer, and applying poisons that kill the Soil Food Web so there is nothing to digest the dead plant matter. backing up quicken files

Let's start with a couple more questions. Where or how did you "give your account a new name"? Have you ever done a year-end? Click on File on the Toolbar. On the appearing drop down menu locate the originally named file and click on it. Did it open? If it did look across the top of the register. Does it say the new name or the original name? Again click on File and select the new name. What does it say above the register? Old name or new? I am starting to think you might have to go back and undo your rename as Quicken is not recognizing it or locating the file by that name. Just dawned on me. You reported an older version. Are you backing up n a 1.44 MB floppy disk or a CD-ROM? I'd almost bet you a beer it's a floppy. DA

this is a suggestion, there is a very good program I like called Revo uninstaller which does a variety of handy things and one of them is it has a startup manager called auto run manager which shows all your startups in plain English that is easy to see what program it belongs to and from there you can choose to stop or start each one. This is a free program you can look at the link and see everything it does and maybe that would be something you could use. Revo Uninstaller you can view each option on it's own page and there is a very good detailed with pictures user guide page for each option, this is the one for the Auto Run Manager it does work on Vista.

1. The quicken data files are usually in My Documents\Quicken. They'll have names like Qdata.qdf, qdata.qel, qdata.idx etc. If you have multiple accounts, you may have something like stocks.qdf etc also. You can search for files using windows explorer. 2. I think you can only have one version on the computer at a time. If you want to revert to the old one, you can either create a system backup before installing or reinstall the old version and restore your data files. 3. The file format probably changed. Quicken does the conversion during installation. 4. Here is a page that lists a number of financial programs, some of which are free. I'm not sure which ones support Turbo tax. 5. If the file format changes, it changes for all transactions, not just checking. 6. I'd go with the latest release.

Click Start, click Run, key msconfig in the space, press enter, select Startup tab and unclick Intuit or Quicken whichever shows, click Apply button at bottom, then restart computer. After the restart you will see a screenshot showing that you have messed with the brain. Select ok, or ignore it. and do your thing.

WinPatrol is a fine addition to any system, and will easily take care of this concern.

Go to start/run/ type in msconfig/ click and open then up at start up tab take check mark out of the ones you do not want or need during start up, this does not remove them from your programs they are there when you want them.

Is Quicken listed in your "Startup" folder?

"Start" -> "All Programs" -> "Startup"

I second DA on the use of Win Patrol, which will warn you if something wants to start and can also be disabled from startup. It is free, by the way.

Wow, loads of great tips.

Owbist, I always forget about CCleaner having that tool.

I do use WinPatrol and found it odd that it didn't pop up to warn me when I installed Quicken. I took a look there and it was not listed in their Start-up menu. I looked around and found it listed under 'tasks'. I clicked, 'end task' and that worked.

Then, I went to CC and found it listed in Start-up but it was greyed out so Win Patrol took care of that.

Strangely, it was not listed in my Start-up folder. I knew I could use msconfig but prefer not to use that unless I have to.

I have a lot of space and memory on this computer, yet Quicken really slowed down my start-up. I'm glad to finally be rid of it.

Thanks so much for the great tips. I hope it will help others who find things running without their permission.

You folks are the best. This forum is the best on Garden Web. If any of you have problems growing Orchids, just let me know...I'll personally take care of them for you :-))

I'm curious, why didn't you want to use msconfig? It seems so easy and requires no additional software.

Pk, I've messed things up a couple of times using msconfig. I do use it when I have to but avoid it if I can. Sometimes a program has multiple parts and are listed separately under different names. They aren't always easy to distinguish. If you shut off something wrong, it can really mess up the program. Sometimes something needs 'something else' to work right.

I could go around in circles, trust me, I've messed things up using msconfig. The mess-up is fixable but difficult to figure out what you shut off. But I will use it when I can't find another way.

Just wanted to update. I wound up using msconfig because nothing else seemed to stop this program from starting. Now its gone!
