backing up quicken files

I still have the older version of Quicken and it works fine as a rule. My backup disk got full, so I gave my acct a new name and tried to back up just yr 2008. When I try to backup now, I get icons showing that have nothing to do with banking. I would appreciate any Quicken users' input as to how to handle it. I get the message "not enough room on disk" and it is a brand new disc. I have a pentium 4, with Windows XP. Also is there any advantage in buying the latest version of Quicken to keep track of one acct?

I see no reason to upgrade unless there is a new feature that you wish. I personally am still using 2006. If you decide to, watch for rebates for existing users. I think the last I saw was $25.00. Tradionally you will need either the orignal receipt or the front of the prior user manual.

Before I can hopefully help with the backup question, are you attempting to backup directly to the disk or are you saving the file on the H/D and then copying to the disk?

My first thought is the data location that you are trying to use has been changed to an alternative location.

I am backing up directly to a blank disc. I hope you can help me. I thought starting with a new name would only select the 2008 files, but nope! Thanks for responding.

Hi, back again, having gotten sidetracked researching a new computer system. I bought a Maxtor external Drive but I am taking it back after reading many many posts suggesting they fail more often than others. I also am finding that even when you use an external drive, that most people recommend that you back up to DVD/CD as well. So I am wondering if you have to back up the external drive, then why have one at all? I didn't want to spend the money on small flash drives to 'store' my data on, because it would not be cheap in comparison to much more storage space on an external drive for the money. But I think I would like to use ONE flashdrive? memory stick? [Are they the same, btw?] just to transfer my data from the old computer to the new. They can be written over repeatedly, correct? After I am finished transferring, I would like to use the flash drive to put my most valuable docs and photos onto the flash drive and use it to store in a safety deposit box. Is that possible? I am thinking that once I get onto a new machine with a new DVD player that would also allow me to write to a DVD, that I could back up that way. Am I making sense? Any experiences that would suggest I should think of doing something else? Oh, btw, I do have a wireless home network and two laptops use the network. One is a Macbook and at the moment one is a PC. Is there anything I should know about formatting my data so it can be used by both Win/PC and Mac? Any storage media I can get that will allow me to use it on both? I am always amazed when people say they have loads of photos or music that they do not want to lose or cannot replace yet have never backed up these valuables. If your hard drive fails tomorrow you have a very real problem. You are not alone in this and I am not trying to be mean spirited but if you fail to look after you and your possessions then who will? For less than $50 you can buy a name brand DVD-RW and for under $20 you can buy 100 blank DVDs. You can buy a lesser amount of blanks of course, that is a choice you can make. The DVD will come with software you install to use it. Or if you already have blank CDs you could use those in the DVD burner. If you back some of that stuff up and remove it from this computer it may well run faster because you will have more free space on the hard drive for the swap file to work better. Does your activity light come on frequently and stay on for long periods? If so this is an indication the swap file is have a problem. Then if you really want to get carried away you can visit Big Lots where they have (or did recently in the Buffalo, NY store) CD or DVD labels and the software to create your own labels for $10 or $11. Another option would be to install this hard drive as a slave in the new computer you intend to buy. You would need to check that there are compatible data connections in the new computer. Older hard drives are IDE or ATA but the newer and faster technology is SATA.

carbonite is a legit company and is a good back up option, if you go through Kim Komando's site you can get a discounted price for carbonite which is one of her sponsors. It is most often used as a full back up option to back up everything you have of value on your pc. Which everyone should have some type of back up plan in existence. If you only want to back up pictures there are many ways to do that, including putting them on cd's, or a separate external hard drive, or you can use an online storage facility and keep copies there. Adrive for example provides a very large free space to store files, I use it. what windows operating system are you using? and what browser?

Let's back up and define if we are discussing Direct Connect, which is what Quicken uses to log on to financial institutions and download transactions. Direct Connect in Quicken 2012 stopped working on 4/30/2015. This change was done by Intuit, who makes Quicken, so there is no way it works after that date. I assume Quicken 2013 will stop working on 4/30/2016, Quicken 2014 on 4/30/2017, etc. Intuit's Official Statement: As per your EULA, all online services for Q 2012 products ended on April 30, 2015. You must use a newer version of Quicken to continue to avail yourself of these services. They refer to "all online services", meaning where Quicken goes online and retrieves transactions or other information. I recall having to upgrade Quicken 2012 because Direct Connect timed out in the previous version but I'm not 100% sure of that. Everyone I know that used Direct Connect in Quicken 2012 saw repeated warnings. If you didn't, I'm guessing you might be exporting a file from your institution and manually importing that one file for that one institution into Quicken. That is a completely different part of the program and probably still works. If that doesn't then there could be a problem with the file. I'm completely unfamiliar with that part of the program. This is SOP for Intuit, selling a programs for an extremely low price, and then having the upgrade be very close to the price of the product outright. Many of the Quickbooks products time out much faster. I think Quickbooks with Payroll forces you to buy a new one each year. Let's start with a couple more questions.

Where or how did you "give your account a new name"?
Have you ever done a year-end?

Click on File on the Toolbar. On the appearing drop down menu locate the originally named file and click on it. Did it open? If it did look across the top of the register. Does it say the new name or the original name? Again click on File and select the new name. What does it say above the register? Old name or new?

I am starting to think you might have to go back and undo your rename as Quicken is not recognizing it or locating the file by that name.

Just dawned on me. You reported an older version. Are you backing up n a 1.44 MB floppy disk or a CD-ROM? I'd almost bet you a beer it's a floppy.

damccoy, I appreciate you trying to help me, but you would have lost on that beer offer. I do not have a floppy slot in this computer. I have Memorex High Speed CD-Rom discs. I will check out your other suggestions right away and let you know. Have a nice day. GG
