Carbonite.com File Back Up Question

I saw this on TV as a way to back up files. Has anyone heard of this? It's $55 a year and supposed to keep files in case computer is stolen or crashes.

I just want to have a copy of my pictures. Would it be easier to just buy blank cd's and copy pictures in the cd writer? And how do I do it? Not too computer literate but how do I make it just copy my pictures?

carbonite is a legit company and is a good back up option, if you go through Kim Komando's site you can get a discounted price for carbonite which is one of her sponsors.

It is most often used as a full back up option to back up everything you have of value on your pc. Which everyone should have some type of back up plan in existence.

If you only want to back up pictures there are many ways to do that, including putting them on cd's, or a separate external hard drive, or you can use an online storage facility and keep copies there. Adrive for example provides a very large free space to store files, I use it.

what windows operating system are you using? and what browser?

I use internet explorer and have windows XP.

i am very disappointed in the performance of my 2 doublefiles. i planted them last spring, one 5' and one 10' away from a maple tree. they get about 4 hrs of mid day sun and my soil is sandy loam. the one closest to the tree droops every day in warm weather and i diligently water it, after which it perks right up. (i surmise this one is planted adjacent to a large and thirsty maple root system.) i wouldn't mind the watering so much if i was rewarded with a show of flowers but after all the pampering last summer i only got ONE bloom! and it was on the back side of the wilty shrub so i had to walk all the way out to the back of the yard and peek around to see it! i, too,would like to know why no flowers!? years ago i had a doublefile that was planted in compacted clay under a huge apple tree. it never saw sunlight and i completely ignored it, yet it bloomed profusely every year. sigh.

Backing up files with a broken CD player?

Hi, back again, having gotten sidetracked researching a new computer system. I bought a Maxtor external Drive but I am taking it back after reading many many posts suggesting they fail more often than others. I also am finding that even when you use an external drive, that most people recommend that you back up to DVD/CD as well. So I am wondering if you have to back up the external drive, then why have one at all? I didn't want to spend the money on small flash drives to 'store' my data on, because it would not be cheap in comparison to much more storage space on an external drive for the money. But I think I would like to use ONE flashdrive? memory stick? [Are they the same, btw?] just to transfer my data from the old computer to the new. They can be written over repeatedly, correct? After I am finished transferring, I would like to use the flash drive to put my most valuable docs and photos onto the flash drive and use it to store in a safety deposit box. Is that possible? I am thinking that once I get onto a new machine with a new DVD player that would also allow me to write to a DVD, that I could back up that way. Am I making sense? Any experiences that would suggest I should think of doing something else? Oh, btw, I do have a wireless home network and two laptops use the network. One is a Macbook and at the moment one is a PC. Is there anything I should know about formatting my data so it can be used by both Win/PC and Mac? Any storage media I can get that will allow me to use it on both? Let's start with a couple more questions. Where or how did you "give your account a new name"? Have you ever done a year-end? Click on File on the Toolbar. On the appearing drop down menu locate the originally named file and click on it. Did it open? If it did look across the top of the register. Does it say the new name or the original name? Again click on File and select the new name. What does it say above the register? Old name or new? I am starting to think you might have to go back and undo your rename as Quicken is not recognizing it or locating the file by that name. Just dawned on me. You reported an older version. Are you backing up n a 1.44 MB floppy disk or a CD-ROM? I'd almost bet you a beer it's a floppy. DA

Carol, hopefully others will come along with their ideas so you can pick the best of the bunch that suits your style. I am like Randy and use Acronis True Image, mine is version 7, for my backups. You would need something similar for the initial backup. I got mine when Acronis made it a free offer for a while. The idea was to get us to use it then buy the upgrade, a nice ploy too but I have stayed with version 7 so far. Regarding the timed backups of your personal data you might consider creating one folder for your work with sub folders for each program you use rather than allow each to store their work where they want it. Then it is a simple matter of copying that folder with all it's sub folders to the external drive any old time your heart desires. Using the method I have described you will overwrite the previously saved data folder. You will be prompted to agree to overwrite so you then have a choice of renaming the folder if you want more than one copy of your saved work.

Another obvious option -- for $55 +/- you can buy a couple of 8gb flash drives or an external hard drive (250gb) to do back ups of pics or your entire system. In the case of flash, it is merely doing a copy of one or more pic files to the new location. The process may be simpler than using a website to which you save files. And once you pay for your own storage media, no more $55. It is simple but if you run into trouble, ask the GardenWeb experts for assistance.

I agree with Fruitjar, I like my data in my control not someplace out in space. I have nothing to hide but the other issue is a small company going out of business with your money. Auto backups frighten me as I am capable of messing up my computer so rely on the backup to restore my things if needed.

My backups are created when I know things are running well on my computer, not until.
