backing up quicken files
Comments (5)Let's start with a couple more questions. Where or how did you "give your account a new name"? Have you ever done a year-end? Click on File on the Toolbar. On the appearing drop down menu locate the originally named file and click on it. Did it open? If it did look across the top of the register. Does it say the new name or the original name? Again click on File and select the new name. What does it say above the register? Old name or new? I am starting to think you might have to go back and undo your rename as Quicken is not recognizing it or locating the file by that name. Just dawned on me. You reported an older version. Are you backing up n a 1.44 MB floppy disk or a CD-ROM? I'd almost bet you a beer it's a floppy. DA...See MoreNAS - what to consider - does it matter if pc is xp or windows 7
Comments (4)Pkponder - thank you for asking your son-in-law on my behalf. It may come to that. Glad to know the Windows version of my main desktop doesn't matter in terms of the NAS. I am going to use a Tivo to retrieve digital data for playing on the television. At this point, I think Tivo's can play Tivo format (which is how I record and store my video) and mpegs. I believe the Tivo is DNLA compliant device. I barely know what that is, but I think it means it can transfer different file formats. I know that I can view my digital pictures, videos and music on my television by retrieving them with my Tivo. I can also play the videos on my laptop. I have Tivo desktop software plus which can transcode any of the tivo videos to a format that can played on Ipads and ipods. Of course, I would have to change the format first. Maybe an NAS can do some of that on the fly - I have no idea. I don't think on the fly video transfer to Ipad and Ipod is that important. If my daughter is home, she has plenty of alternatives for viewing video. And if she wants to load her apple devices for travel, then we have time to get them to the right format. I think the Synology comes with it's own network operating system (which I think is some type of linux distribution). My question on the Raid will be what type. I'll have to learn the difference between Raid 0,1,5 and whatever else there is, so I can choose the appropriate type for me. Thanks. Lynn....See MoreAlternatives to Quicken?
Comments (16)WSJournal just ran this article today (excerpted). Mint.com is a free site created by Intuit, ironically enough: Goalkeeping Gets Easier in the Finances Arena New Mint.com Feature Offers User-Friendly Options That Help Savers Set Up Budget Objectives and Stick to Them WSJournal June 30, 2010 "When most people hear the word "budget," they groan about all the numbers and spreadsheets involved in setting financial goals. Instead they procrastinate and continue spending without any specific savings goals. ...Now Mint.com, a website that already offers user-friendly options for studying how one's money is spent, has introduced an easy way to set budget objectives, link them to accounts and learn specific steps on how to reach those goals. The goals can even be personalized with digital photos, like an image of the car you're saving up to buy. And this service, which launched Tuesday, doesn't cost a cent. Mint.com has been around for almost three years and is already used by millions of people. Its proprietary algorithms encrypt data so people will feel confident enough to input their usernames and passwords for their online financial accounts, allowing them to see all of their financial activity in one place. These accounts include those tied to credit cards, banks, retirement savings and others. Mint is known for displaying colorful visuals like pie charts and graphs, so it's easy for people to see where they're spending their money or how it's being invested. Mint Goals is a new tab on the Mint.com site, and clicking on it directs users to a group of eight popular goals and one that can be customized (more will be added over time). The preset list includes goals to get out of debt, buy a home, buy a car, save for college, take a trip or save for retirement. A digital checklist in each goal called "Next Steps" gives people serious, doable tasks to complete, so they can actually make progress toward a goal in ways other than just putting money aside. This instant gratification saved me from doing a lot of calculating."...See MoreUsing Dropbox to transfer files to new PC
Comments (6)I would recommend buying a usb drive reader. Yank that hard drive out of the old computer, and connect it to the new one. Then copy the files you need over. When doing so, copy the files you want to Dropbox. Will save you a ton of time and frustration with the old computer not working. Bypass it all together unless the hd itself is what's going bad. You old hd is a SATA, so this should work for you. https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Portable-Adapter-Cable-Power/dp/B005B3VO24/ref=pd_sbs_147_5?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B005B3VO24&pd_rd_r=XMK3XNTH75RD4550AZQ2&pd_rd_w=Aw7ZM&pd_rd_wg=W7lil&psc=1&refRID=XMK3XNTH75RD4550AZQ2 When you plug in your drive, it should show up as another drive, just like a usb drive. Then its just drag and drop....See MoreUser
