start up programs

Can someone tell me how to take some programs off of the start up when I boot up my pc? I have Windows Vista. With XP I had a RUN under the start and I would type in MSCONFIG but I can't find anything like that on Vista.

this is a suggestion, there is a very good program I like called Revo uninstaller which does a variety of handy things and one of them is it has a startup manager called auto run manager which shows all your startups in plain English that is easy to see what program it belongs to and from there you can choose to stop or start each one. This is a free program you can look at the link and see everything it does and maybe that would be something you could use.

it does work on Vista.

Click on the Windows Start Icon and type msconfig in the search box.

MalwareBytes free updated here right before christmas. Its now Pro version & does run at start up with some added protection - I assume for 30 days. I maybe was tired or busy when it updated, and possibly didnt pay attention & got pro by accepting it quickly.

Wow, loads of great tips. Owbist, I always forget about CCleaner having that tool. I do use WinPatrol and found it odd that it didn't pop up to warn me when I installed Quicken. I took a look there and it was not listed in their Start-up menu. I looked around and found it listed under 'tasks'. I clicked, 'end task' and that worked. Then, I went to CC and found it listed in Start-up but it was greyed out so Win Patrol took care of that. Strangely, it was not listed in my Start-up folder. I knew I could use msconfig but prefer not to use that unless I have to. I have a lot of space and memory on this computer, yet Quicken really slowed down my start-up. I'm glad to finally be rid of it. Thanks so much for the great tips. I hope it will help others who find things running without their permission. You folks are the best. This forum is the best on Garden Web. If any of you have problems growing Orchids, just let me know...I'll personally take care of them for you :-)) Jane

Task bar to task manger, simply take the mouse cursor place it on an empty place in the Task bar, that's the bar where the clock is now right click on that empty space an select Task Manger once in there you will see at the top a list of functions you can click Applications, Processes, Services, Performance, Networking, Users. At the very bottom of the window over to the left you will see how many process: are running, you will also see CPU usage this should be generally low, and next to that Physical Memory. You can look at each process and see how much Ram (Memory) is being used by that process. and last is End process at the bottom to the right, if you need to end a process, left click that process an choose End process this can occur or be needed if a program is nor closing.

marooma , I just did that and I have a gazillion programs loading at boot-up. I unchecked some of them and will reboot. I'm kind of afraid to take too many off since I don't know what most of them are.... thanks for the info..

that is why the revo is nice it tells you in plain english what those strange start up names belong to so you have a much better idea of what you may or may not want to uncheck.
I have a hard time in msconfig figuring some out but you can always google each item and in short order find out what it is related to.

you never want to turn off any that are related to your firewall, or security programs that must start at startup for protection.

I regularly recommend WinPatrol and I am personally using it on this Vista system. Besides other features the main focus is the startup. I do like the ability to disable/enable besides having the option to delete. If you do decide to give it a try activate it from the Start Menu. "Scotty" will appear in the Notification Area (down by the clock). Click on him and have a good time. While you are in the startup disable WP. It will have no effect on the program other than making it an on-demand application.

Also,

START>All Programs> Accessories will produce the Run pointer.

WinPatrol is an exceptionally good program and worth paying for, but there is a free version, Bill does great work and is really up with what is happening.

For those who miss having the "Run" command in Vista. Right-click the Start button, choose Properties, Customize, check Run command, and click OK and it will be back on your Start Menu.
