Start Up Menu is Cluttered

I am guessing that this is a repeat question, but my search did not bring up what I was looking for. It could be....I am using the term "Start Up" in an erroneous way. I am talking about all the little icons down there by the clock.

When I reboot, it takes much longer than I am happy with. There are things that are starting up that I really don't want to start. Two examples would be MSN Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger. There are some others that are starting up that take a lot of time. I want to speed things up.

My question, is how do I manage those little icons down by the clock. Can I delete some of those from starting up when I reboot? I may be using "Start Up Menu" incorrectly, but I hope my description on what I am wanting to do will be clear.

I thank you for any assistance you might give me.

Larry
